Pilgrims [Documentary - Camino de Santiago]

Documentary: Pilgrims
Duration: 57 min
Languages: English, French, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Italian. (Subtitled)
Camera: Iphone7+

This documentary is about the pilgrims who walk the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. The route has been around since the 9th century and, more than a millennium later, it attracts thousands of pilgrims seeking spiritual experiences every year. In 2018 alone, the pilgrim’s office registered more than 300.000 walkers. But what would drive so many, through incredible lengths?

To discover that, I would cross 900 kilometers across Spain. The journey would take me 32 days, or a total of 1.100.610 steps. After all...

Who are the pilgrims? And why do they walk?

---

I am grateful to have been able to tell stories as unique and surprising as the ones I found on the Way. I tried to be as respectful as possible with everyone who was kind enough to share their stories with me. The reflections that pilgrims raise are among the most pertinent. Not only for walkers who travel the route to Santiago de Compostela. But for all of us who share the same journey throughout life.

Do not be mistaken. I speak directly to pilgrims. Both with those who have already been, and with those who do not yet know, but are.

Buen Camino,
Alexandre

[Journalism Final Project - University of São Paulo]

This film was realized as the final project of my bachelor in journalism, at the University of São Paulo. My proposal was to explore the limits and narrative possibilities provided by the smartphone, through the production of this documentary. I hope to be able to demonstrate that it is possible to achieve the highest caliber cinematography with simple tools, and that the cheapness of smartphone technology can be considered a democratic revolution in the field of mobile journalism.

First time using trekking poles–Is it a fail? |Perfect Hike to Cambre d’Aze Peak in Pyrenees, France

On this one day hike we conquered the mountain peak Cambre d'Aze (2711m) which is located in Eastern Pyrenees, France. We started the hike at the Eyne ski station (1800m) and had to do around 1000m uphill and 1000m downhill. We spent full day hiking this trail and did 26 kms in total. It was our first one-day hike in the summer season 2020 and we were very excited to do it. We've been planning of doing this particular hike for a long time looking at this beautiful mountain from aside. It is not the highest peak in the region but one of the most scenic ones for sure.

We started the hike at 8.30am and the weather was quite foggy and humid. First part of the trail was going mostly through the forest and mountain huts and was quite easy and flat. The trail continued to be fairly easy with a gentle uphill and sometimes was even coming out to a dirt car road. The navigation was certainly an issue though as there wasn't a clear signing of the trail and often was confusing. As there were many crossroads and little forest paths in different directions. It became even harder because of the low clouds and dense fog around us as we couldn't see 10m ahead of us. Then we saw a big uphill in front of us and it was clear that we had to conquer it. This is where the most challenging part of the trail started…

The Hottest Day on Camino de Santiago in Catalonia, Spain - Day 3 | From Pont de Bar to Seu d'Urgell

This was our third day of Cami de Sant Jaume or Catalan Camino de Santiago. The plan was to do the 80 kms in 4 days and get from Llivia village in the province of Girona to Organya in the province of Lleida. It is also called the Camino del Segre, because it follows the stream of the river all the way through crossing the region of Cerdanya and Alt Urgell. It is just a part of the whole Camino de Santiago that can be taken starting from Pyrenees in Spain and moving towards the city of Pamplona where it joins the French Way.

We had a very good night at the camping Pont d'Ardaix, it was thunderstorming a bit in the evening again but then it was all calm and quiet. For the day 3 we planned to do the same distance again as all the previous days - around 20 kms. And our final point was the town of Seu d'Urgell in the province of Lleida. We did realize that the trail probably would be quite challenging and hard because of the mountains around us and the extreme July heat that was staying with us everyday. So we wanted to get ready as quickly as possible and to conquer the main mountain of the day before the midday heat comes. At first the marking of the way was quite good and we barely had to use our GPS. We were running out of food having only some fruit and chocolate left so we were a bit worried whether we have enough supplies for the day, cause we knew that till the end of the day we won't meet any shop. First several kms the trail was easy and almost flat going through the forest and little village Pont de Bar Vell. In this village we met the cutest animal ever - little baby donkey pasturing with his parents. So we were lucky to spend some time with them. We got to enjoy the great views of the mountain summit and gorge on the way. Then we had to walk for about 1.5 kms on the car road having no signs of the way whatsoever. Only GPS and downloaded trail on Wikiloc helped us to find the right direction. It's just the reality of this trail that sometimes you don't see any marking and suddenly in the middle of nowhere you find the sign again. When we got to the village Arseguel we lost our track once again, having hard time wandering through the narrow streets of the old town...

Untouched natural beauty of the atlantic oceancoast | San Pedro de La Ribera, Cabo Vidio and Cadavedo on Camino del Norte-Day 24

On the Day 24 of our Camino de Santiago del Norte we got from San Pedro de la Ribera beach to the village Cadavedo in Asturias.

We spent a quiet night in the fields at a spot that we found yesterday. The day started nicely. Then the sun established it's place on the sky and it was there all day long. The first thing we planned to do is to get to Cabo Vidio and to explore this place - that's what locals recommend you to visit. Our trail started with path through the eucalyptus forest. Then we had a really long walk through the village Vivigo. We wandered a little bit in it and finally came out to Cabo Vidio Cliff. The place was absolutely spectacular giving you 360 degree views of the surrounding cliffs and stunning rocks that are standing out of the water. There is an important lighthouse located - that's seen from 40 km both sides...

Tour de Cerdagne-Beautiful 4 Day Trail to do in Pyrenees |Odeillo Solar Furnace,Bolquere,Font-Romeu

On this 4th and final day of Tour de Cerdagne we completed the hiking tour and did 15kms starting from Eyne village, then walking through Bolquere, Via, Solar Furnace Odeillo and coming to the town Font-Romeu.

We had a quite disturbing night with a lot of rain and thunderstorm in the evening and then cold in the morning. So we didn’t have a good sleep. But in the morning there was a sun shining above the mountain peaks and it was a good sign. So we had our breakfast and tried to heat ourselves up sitting inside the tent and eating a hot meal. When we were all packed and got out on the trail we entered the Eyne village that was another old rocky settlement and then started to follow the car road leaving the village. Throughout all of this hike we were meeting lots of bee hives in the fields and knew that honey is one of the most delicious local products together with cheese and dairy products. The trail started to go along the fields and through the pine forest and it was very calm and peaceful. It wasn’t challenging at all and was going mostly gentle uphill. There we got some beautiful panoramic views on the peak Carlit range in the clouds and on the other side of the valley. The air was still fresh and cool and it took us time to warm up. We were pretty sure that there was some snow on the tops of the mountains after yesterday’s rain and cold temperatures. It ended up being the coldest day out of 4 we’ve been on this trail..

First day hiking GR de Pays Tour de Cerdagne in Pyrénées-Orientales, France | Font-Romeu to Dorres

This was our first day of GR de Pays Tour de Cerdagne trail that we decided to do as a tribute to this beautiful region where we have been living for the last 3 years now. It is a circular trail that can be done in either direction and we decided to go counter clockwise starting in Font-Romeu village. Previously we have done the parts of this trail here and there but have never had a chance to hike it as a whole. So we thought it would be an amazing hike to do to be able to pass by many interesting attractions and overall show the different parts of the region. It is 70km easy to moderate difficulty trail with just few steep uphills and downhills. And it can be done in 4 or 5 days depending on your goals.

So for the first day we planned to hike 16kms from the town Font-Romeu to Dorres village. It was a sunny September morning and the day was expecting to be very warm and summer like.

We started our trail on the forest paths that were going mostly on the flat terrain and had lots of shade. On the way we met quite a lot of bushes of red currant growing in the forest alongside the trail. It was a sour one but still nice to taste. After several kilometers we went out to the car route and entered the village of Egat. We passed by the old half ruined Torre dels Moros dates back to 1294, as well as the roman church and the trail walked us back to the forest. All day long we followed the red yellow sign of GR and it was nice and accurate…

Eastern Pyrenees (BAGA & AX-LES-THERMES)

In Part 3 of his adventure, Brian leaves behind the Catalan coast and heads for the majestic Pyrenees Mountains, as he embarks on an epic mission to visit three countries in one day.

His first stop is the small medieval town of Baga, the alleged birthplace of the founder of the Knight's Templar Order. Here he bids Adios to Spain as he crosses the French border, and enters the historic region of Occitania. The road eventually leads him to the charming French town of Ax-les-Thermes, an ancient spa town once frequented by Romans and Crusaders. After stopping by the town's church and famous thermal springs, Brian heads to the local market, before exploring the town's colorful streets.
