Places to see in ( Camborne - UK )

Places to see in ( Camborne - UK )

Camborne is a town in west Cornwall, England. The northern edge of the parish includes a section of the South West Coast Path, Hell's Mouth and Deadman's Cove. Camborne was formerly one of the richest tin mining areas in the world and home to the Camborne School of Mines.

Camborne is in the western part of the largest urban and industrial area in Cornwall with the town of Redruth 3 miles (4.8 km) to the east. It is the ecclesiastical centre of a large civil parish and has a town council. Camborne-Redruth is on the northern side of the Carn Brea/Carnmenellis granite upland which slopes northwards to the sea. The two towns are linked by the A3047 road which was turnpiked in 1839 and the villages along the road (from the west) were Roskear, Tuckingmill, Pool and Illogan. Running north-south are a number of small streams with narrow river valleys which have been deeply-cut following centuries of tin streaming and other industrial processes.

The first mention of the medieval Camborne churchtown is in 1181 although in 1931 the ruins of a probable Romano-British villa were found at Magor Farm, Illogan, near Camborne, and excavated that year under the guidance of the Royal Institution of Cornwall. By 1708 Camborne had rights to hold markets and three fairs a year which may be an indication of tin mining in the area; Camborne's was inland and in an unfavourable location for trading. Mining is first recorded locally in the 1400s with early exploitation of the small streams cutting through the mineralised area and from shallow mines following lodes.

Camborne is best known as a centre for the former Cornish tin and copper mining industry, having its working heyday during the later 18th and early 19th centuries. Camborne was just a village until transformed by the mining boom which began in the late eighteenth century and saw the Camborne and Redruth district become the richest mining area in the world.

The A30 trunk road now by-passes the Town around its northern edge. The old A30 through the Town has become the A3047. There is a small bus station halfway along and to the south of Trelowarren Street (the main high street), which has featured in tales by Cornish comedian Jethro. The railway station is a half-mile south from the town centre, with a level crossing and footbridge at its eastern end. Camborne station used to be famous for its short platforms, which meant that passengers on main line services between London and Penzance could only board and alight from certain carriages.

Camborne was, for a quarter of a century, one of the termini of Cornwall's only tram service. This system was opened in November 1902 and ran a regular service to Redruth until it closed in September 1927. Camborne is twinned with two places: Santez-Anna-Wened in Brittany, France, and Pachuca, Hidalgo in Mexico. Camborne was twinned with Pachuca at a ceremony in Mexico on 3 July 2008.

( Camborne - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Camborne . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Camborne - UK

Exploring The Empty Beach Towns Of Cornwall In Winter

When most people think of Cornwall, they think of summer beach holidays. Bustling holiday resorts and sun kissed fun by the coast are definitely the norm in Summer, but what are these places like in winter? I chose to explore Perranporth and Newquay on a grim January day when all the tourists are nowhere near. I chose these town towns because they are very much resort towns, set up mainly to fulfil the needs of the summer influx of tourists. They are a very different scene in winter. Shops, cafes, pubs and hotels close and the jobs disappear with them. Left behind are the locals. Some have to struggle all winter and wait for the tourists money to return in the warmer months. I took to the streets to ask the locals of Perranporth and Newquay what life is like for them in winter and which time of year do they prefer.

Penzance is a town, civil parish and port in the Penwith district of Cornwall, United Kingdom. It is the most westerly major town in Cornwall and is about 64 miles west-southwest of Plymouth and 255 miles west-southwest of London. Situated in the shelter of Mount's Bay, the town faces south-east onto the English Channel, is bordered to the west by the fishing port of Newlyn.

Penzance's former main street Chapel Street has a number of interesting features, including the Egyptian House, the Union Hotel (including a Georgian theatre which is no longer in use) and Branwell House, where the mother and aunt of the famous Brontë sisters once lived. Regency, and Georgian terraces and houses are common in some parts of the town. The nearby sub-tropical Morrab Gardens has a large collection of tender trees and shrubs, many of which cannot be grown outdoors anywhere else in the UK. Also of interest is the seafront with its promenade and the open-air seawater Jubilee Bathing Pool (one of the oldest surviving Art Deco swimming baths in the country) built during Penzance's heyday as a fashionable seaside resort. It opened in 1935, the year of King George V's Silver Jubilee.

Penzance is the base of the pirates in Gilbert and Sullivan's comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance. At the time the libretto was written, 1879, Penzance had become popular as a peaceful resort town, so the idea of it being overrun by pirates was amusing to contemporaries.

The Scillonian III Passenger Ferry sails from Penzance harbour to St Mary's, the largest island in the Isles of Scilly.

The Egyptian House is a grade I listed building in the Cornish town of Penzance. It is built in the style of Egyptian Revival architecture and has been in the ownership of the Landmark Trust since the 1970s. The current building dates from 1835–36. The building is at 6–7 Chapel Street, Penzance.

Penzance was the birthplace of the chemist Sir Humphry Davy. He is best known as the inventor of the Miner's Safety Lamp, or Davy lamp. There is a statue of Davy at the top of Market Jew Street, near the house in which he was born.

The Market House and Old Town Hall (1836–38) in Market Jew Street was designed by William Harris, District Surveyor for Bristol, in the Greek Revival style. It has a grand Ionic portico and is surmounted by a dome. Alterations for Lloyds Bank were carried out in 1922–25.

Lands End – Is it worth it? + Visiting the amazing Minack Theatre | Cornwall's Top Attractions | UK

Today we’re visiting Cornwall's top attractions, the amazing Minack Theatre, and Land’s End, England’s most southern point.

The Minack Theatre is an incredible beautiful open-air theatre perched on the cliffs of the rugged south west coast of Cornwall. Rowena Cade and her gardener Billy Rawlings carved the theatre into the cliff face almost entirely by hand in the 1930s.

The views of the ocean and Porthcurno Beach from Minack Headland are stunning and the theatre puts on regular shows during the English summer time.

We spend the afternoon checking out Land's End and take a look at the iconic Land’s End signpost to find out if it’s worth it.

The headland and the views of the cliffs and ocean at Land’s End are absolutely gorgeous.

We’d love to make out way up to John O’ Groats at some point so thought visiting lands end was a must. John O’ Groats is the most northern point of mainland England.

Thanks for joining as we visit the Minack Theatre and Land's End in our Cornwall travel vlog series. We've discovering what to see in Cornwall. This has been such an amazing trip for us and we really hope you’ve enjoyed coming along with us as we explore Cornwall.

St Ives is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times St Ives was commercially dependent on fishing.

The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis, and the town is now primarily a popular seaside resort, notably achieving the title of Best UK Seaside Town from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists. It was named best seaside town of 2007 by The Guardian newspaper. It should not be confused with St Ive, a village and civil parish in south-east Cornwall.

St Ives is situated on the western shore of St Ives Bay, its harbour sheltered by St Ives Island (a headland) and Smeaton's pier. Close to the harbour, St Ives streets are narrow and uneven while its wider streets are in the newer parts of the town on rising ground. The town of St Ives has four beaches: Porthmeor a surfing beach, Porthgwidden a small sandy cove, Harbour by the working port and Porthminster which has almost half a mile of sand. St Ives has an oceanic climate and has some of the mildest winters and warmest summers in Britain and Northern Europe. St Ives is therefore a popular tourist resort in the summer, and also benefits from an amount of sunshine per year that is above the national average. The South West Coast Path passes through the town.

St Ives railway station is linked to the Paddington to Penzance main rail route via the St Ives branch line which runs frequent services from St Erth station. The line was opened in 1877 by the St Ives branch railway, but became part of the Great Western Railway in 1878. A Park-and-Ride facility for visitors to St Ives runs from Lelant Saltings railway station, which opened on 27 May 1978 specifically for this purpose. The line also links the town to nearby Carbis Bay and Lelant.

Cornwall's Poorest Town In THE COST OF LIVING CRISIS

When most people think of Cornwall, UK in 2022 they think of places like St Ives... golden sands and quaint fishing villages of Poldark fame. Cornwall is the nation's premiere holiday hotspot. A dreamy far away peninsula in the far South West tip of Britain known as the land of surfing. What most are unaware of is that just a few miles from the million pound plus coastal properties on the North Coast lies a town that tells a tale of long suffering and deprivation. Camborne, once a prosperous mining town, has been on the wane for around 100 years since the decline of the copper and tin industry. The tourism economy doesn't seem to be benefiting the local residents very much. For decades Camborne has been the dirty secret of the tourism industry in Cornwall. Unvisited by the masses, this is one of the most impoverished areas in North Europe. There is a lack of opportunity and employment crippled by high rents and a second home epidemic that strangles the availability of housing for those on low income. This desperation has been further exacerbated by the 2022 cost of living crisis in the UK, where energy and food prices have skyrocketed choosing many to make a choice between heating their home and eating. I took to the streets of Camborne on a sunny October Saturday afternoon to talk to the locals and get an understanding of the current struggle in the town.
