West Coast road trip - Malmesbury - piketbrg - Elandsbaai - Lambertsbaai - Clanwilliam - Calvinia
Join us, Jacobus and Eric, on our Going Places vlog.
We went to for an overnight outing to Calvinia, but stopping at all the small west coast towns of the Western Cape on our way there. We stopped at malmesbury, piketberg, Elandsbaai, Lambertsbaai, and Clanwilliam. We saw some of the last flowers from the famed flowers of the west coast. Lunch was at Issabella's at the Lambertsbaai harbour and dinner was at Die Blou Naartjie' or the blue tangerine in english at Calvinia. We stayed over at Africab Dawn bed and breakfast at Calvinia (well recommended fro an overnight spot).

The road from Komaggas to Springbok might have been a tarred road, but it was stunning all the same. The Spektakel Pass was made so much more of a spectacle because of the story behind its name. When we arrived in the bustling Northern Cape town of Springbok, we could immediately see why it is the largest town in Namaqualand. We knew straightaway that we would not be able to cover even a small percentage of the town with the limited time to our disposal, so we just took a drive through and saw what we could. Then it was off to our accommodation about 10km outside of Springbok, where we had a fantastic time with a view to die for. Springbok - Driving in Namaqualands biggest town - Northern Cape, South Africa
Following on from Poffader I arrived in Springbok. It is the biggest town in the Namaqualand region of South Africa. The town is very beautiful with amazing rocky landscapes. I had a good time in the town, got to enjoy some beers with the locals. The town has a population of about 13 000 people from what I read online. The town has long history of mining, copper mining was once very important in the area. An interesting side note, when I was there a guy tried to sell me diamonds, he literally had the diamonds in his mouth, I wasn't sure whether the diamonds where real or not but I decided not to buy anything from him lol.

S1 – Ep 309 – Hotazel – An Interesting Visit to this Mining Town!
The tar road from Deben to Hotazel proved to be the most treacherous one we had ever encountered. Despite its rough conditions, the journey itself was fascinating. During our visit to this mining town several interesting things caught our eye. Amongst others was the well-equipped gym and the extensive recreational club, which offered an array of engaging activities and opportunities for leisure. Whether it was sports, social gatherings, or cultural events, this club served as a vibrant hub for the local community to come together and foster a sense of cameraderie outside of working hours. It was apparent that the town placed great importance on providing its residents with outlets for relaxation and enjoyment. Moreover, the cleanliness and neatness of Hotazel made a lasting impression on us. The well-maintained streets and tidy public spaces reflected the pride the community takes in their surroundings, contributing to a sense of order and tranquility. Harsh Beauty | Episode 3 of 3 | Overlanding the Northern Cape | Verneukpan, Witsand
Delwynne and I love South Africa's largest and least populated province, the Northern Cape. In May 2021, we took a two week, 4,000km overlanding trip in our Mahindra Scorpio S10 through the province visiting several remote and beautiful locations. In this episode we start in Namaqualand, overnight in Calvinia, spend two nights at Verneukpan, one night at Witsand and the last night in Vryberg before returning home.
This was a fun series to make and I put significant effort into it. Follow along to see some unusual, but beautiful sights in the Northern Cape.

S1 – Ep 135 – Loeriesfontein is a small town surrounded by mountains!
We left the Quiver Tree Forest late afternoon and by the time we reached the small town of Loeriesfontein it was almost dusk, so we didn't have much time to look around. We headed to Smurfs Den, our accommodation for the evening. The next morning, after coffee, we left and started exploring. We just loved the Windpump Museum, which is one of only two in the world. The town is in a basin which is surrounded by mountains and it was developed in 1894 around the general store. In our video you will see that it is the local Spar now, but the original store was established 128 years ago. Kenhardt, Northern Cape, South Africa
Kenhardt (founded 1868) is a small town in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. This little town is about 120 km fromUpington, the largest town in the area.
History
On December 27, 1868, special magistrate Maximillian Jackson with a police contingent was sent to act against the Griquas in the area. The Griqua's anti-colonial resistance had erupted into an open conflict. Jackson arrived in Kenhardt and set up camp under a giant camelthorn tree.
Kenhardt has been, for a long time the most remote settlement in the North-Western Cape. With time the town developed from under this tree, becoming a municipality in 1909. The Hartbees River, with its many sweet thorn trees, provides a green belt irrigated by the Rooiberg Dam. Kenhardt is famous for being at the heart of the Dorper sheep-farming area.
Geography
This region contains little vegetation, primarily low shrubs and yellow grass among a rocky, desert kind of landscape. If you travel south from Kenhardt towards Brandvlei, you will pass through a vast landscape of nothingness for the next 200 km and more. During the seasons, many birds flock to the pans, when they contain water, after some rainfall. Temperature above 40°C is not uncommon.
Activities
Visit the Quiver Tree Forest, Kokerboom Woud in Afrikaans, about 8 km south of Kenhardt on the main route to Cape Town. Some of these trees have specially formed weaver birds nests. The forest comprises approximately 4,000 to 5,000 Kokerbome.
Walk the legendary geological granite metamorphic outcrops of the area. Along the trail, all kind of quartz lies scattered.
Tours to the pans on the outlying farms where you can view San artwork– also known as Bushman– and enjoy the farm hospitality as well as a hiking trail where Anglo-Boer War remains, and the beautiful landscape can be experienced.

Giant Camelthorn Tree
This tree is about 500–600 years old. It is under this tree that Magistrate Jackson set up his camp in 1868.
Old Library Building
The old library was built in 1897, and it was used until 1977. In 1978, it was declared a national monument. Currently, it is used by Sanlam as their office.
Verneukpan
A vast dry pan on which Sir Malcolm Campbell tried, in Bluebird 1, to set a new world land-speed record in 1929.
