10. Ponferrada to Monte do Gozo. Avoiding the crowds. Camino De Santiago Frances Route

I walk along drying my laundry - the comfortable men's underwear I wear to stop chaffing beneath my fabulous Macabi hiking skirt!

Passed through bustling Sarria - where many pilgrims start their journey - & stay at Albergue Barbadelo to get a head-start and avoid crowds

Day 34
Despite the presence of more groups on the Way, including exuberant school groups, we are mostly walking in peace and quiet. Avoid staying in popular Portomarin & instead have a very fun night at albergue Casa Garcia in Gonzar.

Day 35.
We pass 700km.

Galicia is gorgeous. Visited an archaeological site, Castromaior, bypassed by so many pilgrims, a 'Castro' inhabited from the 4th century BCE till the 1st centry AD. We see sewerage systems, fire hearths, and incredible straight walls. It's awe-inspiring and we had the whole place to ourselves.

Rained fairly steadily for a while, which seems to help us gather pace. Not cold or windy, just somehow provokes a more inward approach to walking which makes kilometres fly by.

We made a choice to walk further than is comfortable; for the sake of a promise made to a guy we'll most likely never met again. (animated shadow person walking with us back on day 23). He was Galician, and insisted we must go to Melide to try Pulpo ????. So we walked about 34 km to do just that. Once again, walking more than 30 wiped us out. When will we learn? Pulpo was a treat though...

Day 36.
Slightly exhausted from previous day's effort, we still somehow manage to stay clear of the reported crowds on the Camino. Maybe it's our dirty pilgrim stink!

It's a leisurely kind of day with some delicious local cheese, some silliness and, most surprisingly, loads of eucalyptus trees. Smells like home. Drawing closer to Santiago now...

Had a fine overnight rest with a great host who gave us free beer, lollies, jokes and ice for the aches. Casa Tia Teresa, Salceda

Day 37.
Had thought today felt a bit 'ordinary' until we looked through the footage. Gazpacho picnic on an old bridge, prancy pony street signs, odd popping bushes ... Maybe we're getting lazily blasé about being here - remind ourselves to be mindful and grateful.

Having pre-dinner drinks - love that coffee often comes with a bickie or cake, or beer comes with a savoury snack. Meanwhile, in Australia we have to pay for tomato sauce on the pie. Poor form, I reckon.

Stay only 5km from Santiago de Compestela - honestly the worst albergue of our Camino.

Opening song by unknown, very cool busker near Cruceiro Santo Toribio on the descent into Astorga (to feature in a later episode). If you see him, pay him well (we did) and if you have a spare souvenir from your country, he'd love it. We were so sorry not to have a Kiwi one for him.

Camino De Santiago - Ponferrada to Las Herreías

Hi and thanks for clicking on my video. Please consider liking the video and Subscribing to my channel!

This video is the section of the Camino from Ponferrada to Las Herreías, over two days. Firstly, Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo and then Las Herrerías I had been having some foot issues so had to have a shorter, second day to Las Herrerías, but I'm glad i did as it was on the best villages I stayed in. It meant for a longer walk the next day, as you will see in the next video.

Ponferrada - A little-known gem in the north of Spain

Today we visit Ponferrada, a small city in the Bierzo region in the north of Spain that offers great quality of life and fantastic food and wine. One of Spain's little-known gems and well worth a visit if you are in that part of the world.

Day 28 Camino De Santiago. Full Journey. Molinaseca-Cacabelos 21.1K I went into a REAL CASTLE!!

Top rated documented journey showing El Camino De Santiago-Frances.
In this video I was so lucky to get into the Knights of the Templar Castle build in the 1100's. right when they opened and explored it without anyone else there! I had an hour and 15 minutes to myself before throngs of people arrived. What an amaaaazing castle and oh! the history is so rich and golden.

My feet and body felt a bit beat up from the jagged rocky hike down into Molinaseca, but I'm moving forward and counting my blessings.

Thanks for the love, Alaskan Pilgrim - Jeanee

Cacabelos: TAKE A CHANCE ON US! / GIVE US A GO! ???????? ????????

Cacabelos has always been a great place to live. It is located on the lower course of Cúa River, where the abundance of archaeological remains are evidence of human settlement throughout history.

The municipality stands out not only for its natural and cultural heritage but also for being the wine capital of El Bierzo and, above all, because of the friendly and welcoming spirit of its people who were, already since Roman times, located in a crossroad. El Bierzo is a joyful town that enjoys its festivals, traditions, fairs and re-enactments.

Its archaeological sites, Castro Ventosa and La Edrada, are Bien de interés cultural (similar to World Heritage Sites but it is a category registered in Spain only). Both are related to Bergidum Flavium, the city and road mansion from the Roman period which is located about 30 km away from the most spectacular gold mining of the Iberian Peninsula, Las Médulas, which used to be the nerve center of the communications and administration of the entire region. Castro Ventosa, which is located on a 638 meter-high hill, has pre-roman origin and was inhabited until the 10th century.

Cacabelos has one of the most pleasant and charming landscapes in El Camino de Santiago. Since it has always had an easy passage over the Cúa River through its Puente Mayor, the town grew continuously during the Middle Ages thanks to its agricultural wealth, the trade with pilgrims and Frankish settlers. Shelters, hospitals, chapels and churches emerged around El Camino. In the Modern Age and thanks to El Camino of Charles III, Cacabelos was a post house, and it continued to grow without losing the fantastic landscaped and delicious cuisine of a unique land.

The Cacabelos Archaeological Museum is located in the middle of El Camino de Santiago and it is one of the most emblematic buildings of Cacabelos. It was built in 1982 and it was intended for winery during the first half to the 20th century. Nowadays, it combines its original function with those of being a tourist spot and a cultural meeting point.

Cacabelos to Vega de Valcarce on the Camino de Santiago

Today we had quite a mix of climbing up and down on the trail. There were a couple of short steep hills, but we had all day!

Distance: 24.7 km with a height of 476 m to 629 m.

We left Cacabelos around 8 am and over the River Cua I stopped to look at the Sanctuario of Quinta Angustia. There were many vineyards on the Camino and the day was sunny, but with white puffy clouds everywhere! A popular winery Tilenus has vineyards off the Camino as well. A very creative welcome sign is waiting for pilgrims in Villafranca as you will see in my video.

Getting into Villafranca is a welcome mural and passed that there is a small petite cafe with a sign that has hammocks waiting for pilgrims to rest on. I had a deep conversation with the owner and she was truly genuine and a great soul!

Walking through Pereje and Trabadelo was different. I felt like I was in a forest. At times, I thought I was not on the Camino as I walked mostly alone this day.

Villafranca: Make sure to visit the Church of Santiago Villfranca and touch the northern door, which is called door of forgiveness. Pilgrims take communion at this church.

Vega de Valcarce: We stayed at the Casa Rural El Recanto, which was a perfect spot on the Camino. The price was great and the location beautiful. You have to check-in at the bakery across the street.

Top rated documented journey showing El Camino De Santiago-Frances.
In this video the weather continues to get cooler and my body, feet and mind all felt as one. It was a spectacular walk. Moist, fresh, mossy and green. A very fresh and wonderful walk and hike. My heart is overflowing with gratitude and enjoyed my solo time. My senses are on point so sensitive to smells, color, texture and tastes. My heart feels like it will explode sometimes.

I encourage you to come join this. If even for a day. Life is a blessing. Count yours every day.
