Places to see in ( Ilkley - UK )

Places to see in ( Ilkley - UK )

Ilkley is a spa town and civil parish in West Yorkshire, in Northern England. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Ilkley civil parish includes the adjacent village of Ben Rhydding and is a ward within the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford. Approximately 12 miles (19 km) north of Bradford and 17 miles (27 km) northwest of Leeds, the town lies mainly on the south bank of the River Wharfe in Wharfedale, one of the Yorkshire Dales.

Ilkley's spa town heritage and surrounding countryside make tourism an important local industry. The town centre is characterised by Victorian architecture, wide streets and floral displays. Ilkley Moor, to the south of the town, is the subject of a folk song, often described as the unofficial anthem of Yorkshire, On Ilkla Moor Baht 'at. The song's words are written in Yorkshire dialect, its title translated as On Ilkley Moor without a hat.

Ilkley is within the travel-to-work radius of Leeds and Bradford. Leeds is 18 miles (29 km) away and Bradford 15.6 miles (25.1 km) by road, with a railway connection offering about 35 trains to each destination per day from Ilkley railway station. The railway, before the Beeching axe, also connected to Addingham, Bolton Abbey and Skipton to the west, and to Otley, Pool-in-Wharfedale, meeting the main Leeds to Harrogate line at Arthington.

Ilkley is a tourist destination and is used as a base from which to explore the famous moor and the countryside beyond. Ilkley is a shopping town that sells everything from game, fine wine, expensive fashions and fine art. The Victorian parades of the Grove and Brook Street have a selection of speciality shops. The town's original Victorian arcade has been restored as an indoor shopping walkway complete with a fountain and hanging baskets. Bettys, the Yorkshire tea room, has a shop in the town.

Ilkley lies on the A65 road, which runs between Leeds and Kendal. The nearest substantial motorways are the M62 at Bradford, and the M1 at Leeds, and the A1(M) at Wetherby. The civil parish is served by two railway stations: Ilkley terminus and Ben Rhydding. These are linked by the Wharfedale Line upon which trains run between Ilkley and Leeds/Bradford Forster Square stations.

Ilkley town centre is a tourist attraction with a high number of small independent shops. Of particular note is Lishman's of Ilkley, an award-winning butcher shop whose owner, David Lishman, became one of Rick Stein's superheroes in 2003. Ilkley is one of five towns to feature a Bettys tearoom and is home to the Michelin-starred Box Tree restaurant

Ilkley Toy Museum has a collection of toys dating from 350 BC and a collection of English wooden dolls. Ilkley is home to the largest and oldest literary festival in the North of England, the Ilkley Literature Festival.

( Ilkley - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Ilkley . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Ilkley - UK

4K Doing The Hallam And Harrogate Lines

Leading on from the video at York station I did a few weeks ago, I present the prequel...

This is a trip along the Hallam Line from Darton through Wakefield to Leeds, then the rolling fields surrounding the Harrogate Line from Leeds to York. There's plenty of lush, green countryside and different types of trains on a cold, but sunny winter morning.

This leads into a group of videos I did in the area - coming soon...

Lower Wharfedale, Yorkshire: Addingham, Ilkley and Otley

This area of Wharfedale is packed with history: the rock art of Ilkley Moor; the Saxon church at Addingham; old preraching crosses and tombs in Ilkley Church; the coming of the Spa and water treatments at Ben Rhydding. At Addingham you can trace the rise of the Industrial Revolution from the home weavers with their own Cloth Hall, to the Loom Shops that came before the mills. Although the river Wharfe travels for a further 50 miles - the valley proper ends at Otley under the escarpment of the Chevin. It was home to furniture maker Thomas Chippendale - today it is a lively market town with its own livestock market. This is the last part of our series on Wharfedale: check out - Langstrothdale, Upper Wharfedale and Mid Wharfedale.

Langstrothdale, Wharfedale, Yorkshire Dales

Beyond Upper Wharfedale lies Langstrothdale - an 11 mile continuation of the dale where the actual river Wharfe comes into being. The infant Wharfe starts at the confluence of Greenside and Oughtershaw Becks at Beckermonds. These streams rise on the watershed with Ribblesdale and in sight of Ingleborough. This is where the highest road in the Yorkshire Dales passes over the 1,934ft high pass of Fleet Moss. The road follows the becks and passes through the hamlets of Deepdale, Oughtershaw, Yockenthwaite and ends at Hubberholme, where the side valley turns to join Wharfedale proper. It is wild bleak place, but with much to interest visitors including a stone circle and the church at Hubberholme. This is part of a longer film on Wharfedale - watch the next part: Upper Wharfedale.

Northern Class 333 departs Ilkley

Which is the better traction for the Airedale and Wharfedale lines in Leeds/West Yorkshire? Class 331 or Class 333? I like both as they have good motors. All Northern electric services around Leeds/West Yorkshire use Class 331s and Class 333s at random apart from the Leeds to Doncaster route which only uses Class 331s. Class 333s have 2x3 seating which is alright for short journeys while Class 331s have 2x2 seating.
This was during my last trip to Leeds/West Yorkshire on Friday 23rd December 2022. Unit number 333015 departing Ilkley with 2V25 1110 to Leeds calling at Ben Rhydding (1112), Burley-in-Wharfedale (1117), Menston (1121), Guiseley (1124) and Leeds (1141) -
