S1 – Ep 185 – Hofmeyr – A Pretty Town close to the Bamboes Mountains!

Hofmeyr is yet another pretty Eastern Cape Karoo town which we enjoyed visiting. This town is very close to the Bamboes Mountain Range and its original name was Maraisburg and later renamed after Jan Hofmeyr. While driving around we found the Anglo Boer War Memorial in the park as well as the Great Trek centenary celebratory pyramid which was in the same park in the centre of town. Then it was time for us to leave this beautiful town and find our accommodation at Waterlea-on-River Tented Cabins about 35km from Hofmeyr. What an amazing stay we had, on the river in a fancy tent! The next morning, we unfortunately had to leave for our next destination. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #hofmeyr #bamboes #mountains #karoo

S1 – Ep 184 – Steynsburg – Surrounded by Mountains and Hills in the Eastern Cape’s Karoo!

The hills and mountains as you approach Steynsburg are amazing. When we entered we could see that it was surrounded by them. This small town is located in the Eastern Cape’s Karoo and we love the Karoo. After filling up with fuel, we made sure to find the train station. The station building must have been a grand old building in its day but it is not in use anymore and is not in good shape. We then took a drive to the Town Hall and found it also not to be functioning anymore. The churches seemed to be in good condition except for one which looked totally abandoned. The caravan park was another spot we were very keen on visiting but it too was sadly not open for business anymore. I was happy to see that the local authority is working on the roads and improving them. Despite the town in some need of serious attention and upliftment, it was a very interesting visit to Steynsburg. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #steynsburg #easterncape #karoo #mountains

S1 – Ep 339 – Komani / Queenstown – The Sight of the Beautiful Town Hall!

During our trip to Komani / Queenstown, we were captivated by the town's grandeur, surpassing our expectations of a typical destination. Upon arrival, our hearts sank at the sight of the beautiful town hall, once an emblem of history and pride, now a charred ruin due to unfortunate protests. It was a painful reminder of the fragility of cherished landmarks. However, our spirits were uplifted as we discovered numerous well-preserved historic buildings, particularly the awe-inspiring churches. Fortunate enough to set foot inside one, we were greeted by an architectural marvel. Driving through the town, we encountered old war memorials in the park, where people were joyously immersed in their activities. Our accommodation proved to be a delightful haven, meticulously maintained and inviting. The following morning, after a hearty breakfast, we delved deeper into the town, uncovering more of its hidden treasures, amongst which quite a few educational ones, before bidding farewell and embarking on our long journey back home. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #komani #queenstown

S1 – Ep 324 – Boknesstrand and Cannon Rocks – Fascinating Piece of History!

Our trip to Boknesstrand and Cannon Rocks was filled with adventure and discovery. Despite arriving in darkness, our accommodation provided us with a comfortable stay and we enjoyed the delicious chicken curry we bought. The next morning, we eagerly set out to explore these captivating destinations. The Estuary at Boknesstrand left us in awe with its breathtaking beauty. As we enjoyed a delightful breakfast of locally-made toasties at the pristine beach, we marvelled at the surroundings. A short drive away, we reached Cannon Rocks, where we discovered a fascinating piece of history. The cannons on the beach originated from a vessel that fell victim to pirate attacks in 1622 and sank just offshore. Walking along the beach, we also stumbled upon remnants of another shipwreck, which was a reminder of the treacherous reputation of this shoreline. Learning that this coastline ranked as the third most perilous in the world, left us astonished. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #boknesstrand #cannonrocks

S1 – Ep 333 – Adelaide – A Town Showing off its Clean Streets and Natural Beauty!

Our drive through Adelaide in the Eastern Cape revealed a town showing off its clean streets and and natural beauty. The charm of Adelaide lies in its well-preserved churches and old buildings, each telling a story of the town's rich history. The grand Dutch Reformed Church, reminiscent of a castle, stood as a magnificent centrepiece. As we explored further, we stumbled upon an abandoned station, a testament to a bygone era of bustling railway activity. The school buildings and the hospital serving the community added to the town's character, while the monument on Market Square stood as a proud symbol of remembrance. Adelaide's allure lies in its combination of picturesque architecture, a sense of nostalgia, and the vibrant community. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #adelaide

HANOVER R 0 c K s

A day in Hanover.

I took the filming gear and decided to capture the little Karoo town to see it from a different angle. I made this fun edit to showcase the town which is said to be the halfway stop between Johannesburg and Cape town and also Port Elizabeth and Upington, which explains the fact that there is so many guesthouses.

Hanover, a small town in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa, is named after Hanover in Germany. The town was established in 1854.

The church in the middle of Hanover shows how busy this town used to be and is a magnificent architectural building.

The town is +-70 km from Colesberg and is surrounded by the Karoo Gariep nature reserve which hosts among others the New Holme guest farm which is next to the Seekoei river. A awesome guest farm to break away to and explore the area.

It’s mostly Merino sheep farms in the area.

A footpath leads up to Trappieskop which offers panoramic views of the area which can be seen on the drone shots in the video. There’s also or at least whats left of the signage which read Hanover Rocks.

The country's first observatory once stood proud at the top of Trappieskop, but it has been moved and is now part of the observatory at Sutherland.

Tuishuise Cradock - South Africa Travel Channel 24

Die Tuishuise in Cradock is an elegant collection of beautifully restored Victorian era craftsmen's houses in Craddock, the frontier town at the eastern edge of the Great Karoo of South Africa. More than two dozen Tuishuise line Market Street up to the Victoria Manor, a grand old colonial hotel that welcomes you with hearty country fare and décor from the days of Cecil John Rhodes, Olive Schreiner and the droves of adventurers who passed here en route to the hinterland. Modern day over-landers crossing South Africa on holiday and business groups looking for inspiration stay at Die Tuishuise, where they are received like old friends and treated like gentry.

S1 – Ep 438 – Skukuza Rest Camp!

Our visit to Skukuza Rest Camp in the Kruger National Park was truly wonderful. Exploring in and around the camp, we were amazed by the unique golf course with hippos in the water hazards, adding an exciting twist to the game. The beautifully maintained nursery showcasing indigenous plants, bonsai's included, was a sight to behold, and our stop at the Lake Panic Hide offered stunning scenery and an exciting sighting of a pied kingfisher swooping in to catch a fish. During our drive, we encountered incredible wildlife, making the experience even more memorable. The evening meal at Kruger Station was simply outstanding, and as train and station enthusiasts, we couldn't have been happier. Overall, our time at Skukuza was brilliant, filled with nature's wonders and delightful moments. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #krugernationalpark #skukuza

One of the Longest straights I've travelled

This section of straight as a die road in the Eastern Cape is about 16km (10 miles) long without so much as a kink in it.
It's the R391 road from Burgersdorp.
I find it quite hypnotic to watch, especially speeded up!
Hope you enjoy it too!

Discover the Rich History and Beauty of the Afrikaans Language Monument in Cape Town, South Africa!

#AfrikaansLanguagemonument #PaarlWesternCape #SLOTHIESLDS

The Afrikaans Language Monument celebrates a remarkable language of Africa, and is one of many language monuments in the world and also in South Africa. The oldest one in South Africa that we know of is in Burgersdorp in the Eastern Cape, which was erected in 1893 for the recognition of the Dutch language. The Free State towns of Kroonstad and Welkom both built monuments honouring the Afrikaans language in 1959, but many other towns in South Africa constructed their own small monuments in the 1970s during the construction of this iconic monument in Paarl. We are aware of more than 20 such monuments all over South Africa.

* Afrikaans (meaning from Africa/African) did not specifically originate in Paarl, but an important part of Afrikaans’s formal history played itself out in Paarl.
* In the mid-1800s the Dutch linguist Arnoldus Pannevis realised that the language was already a language in its own right and suggested that it be called Afrikaans, rather than Cape Dutch. He and other Paarlites yearned to translate the Bible into Afrikaans to establish its status as a written language. They decided to form an association that could work for the recognition of Afrikaans as a written language, and so the Fellowship of True Afrikaners (Genootskap van Regte Afrikaners, GRA) was founded in Paarl on 14 August 1875 in the homestead that today houses the Afrikaans Language Museum.
* The Language Monument, which is more sculpture than architectural work, was erected in Paarl as the Paarlites wanted to commemorate the contribution of the First Language Movement (the GRA). Significantly, the monument was unveiled on 10 October 1975, a symbolic 100 years after the establishment of the GRA and 50 years after Afrikaans became an official language of the country in 1925. It represents and celebrates the diversity, growth and origin of Afrikaans.
* The first seeds for Afrikaans, however, were already sown in the 1500s when language contact between the Khoikhoi and Dutch seafarers occurred
* The origin of the language is spread across three continents, namely Europe, the East and of course Africa – and this is portrayed by the monument. It symbolises the different languages that formed Afrikaans, expresses the inspiration of two Afrikaans writers, and places Afrikaans within the context of Africa.

The monument, as an inclusive institution, strives to have everyone respect and appreciate Afrikaans. In this spirit, the institution is working hard to encourage and support Afrikaans, especially among the youth and non-mother tongue speakers. The institution continuously seeks to improve the relationship between Afrikaans and other indigenous languages, amongst others by recognising and displaying the mutual influences on each other. Our dream is to have this monument serve as a beacon of hope for the development and recognition of all African languages.

KEY POINTS ON THE MONUMENT AND WHAT THEY REPRESENT:

1 – Dit is ons erns: The history of the wording in the pavement, “Dit is ons erns” (roughly translated as “We are serious about this”), dates back to 1905.
2 – Inspiration for the design: One of the architect’s most important design principles was to integrate the monument into the natural site, and to enhance it.
3 – Symbolism of the 3 columns: The columns represent the influence of Western European languages and cultures on the development of Afrikaans, including Dutch, German, French and Portuguese.
4 – Symbolism of wall on stairway: The wall on the stairway of the monument represents the influence of Indonesian languages (mainly Malay) on the development of Afrikaans.
5 – Symbolism of 3 domes: This stage and three domes represent the influence of the Khoikhoi and other African languages, including isiXhosa, isiZulu and Sesotho, on the development of Afrikaans, and represent the southern tip of Africa.
6 – Symbolism of bridge above staircase: Where the two curves of Western Europe and Africa meet, a bridge is formed, reflecting the inspiring fusion of the two continents’ languages.
7 – Main column: Symbolises the growth of Afrikaans.
8 – Fountain: This light and the fountain’s water symbolise the vigorous growth of the language.
9 – South Africa column: Depicting the Republic of South Africa, the birthplace of Afrikaans.
10 – Podium and building process: The building work on the monument lasted two years from 1972 to 1974 and cost R700 000.
11 – The grave of Jan van Wijk: The architect of the monument, Jan van Wijk, died in 2005.
12 – Groen Galery: The Green Gallery, an open-air gallery, was created to support Jan’s work, which depicts a sensitive attitude towards the natural South African landscape.
13 – Paarl Rock: Almost in the middle of the site is a stony hillock that consists of groups of granite rocks.
