Rather Superb Tour of Brixton - London History and Culture
In this rather excellent walking tour of Brixton Joolz shows how the area has changed from fields and farm land in the 19th century to a multicultural bustling hub of activity.
Brixton was home to David Bowie, John Major and many of the people who arrived from the Caribbean on the Windrush in 1948. Since then Brixton has been the heart of the Afro-Caribbean community in London where you can find the Black Cultural Archive and Brixton Market with culturally diverse shops and food.
Also home to the famous Blacker Dread record store and Pop Brixton, a market made of shipping containers.
We meet poet Naturalie Wright and poet and community activist Michael Groce who recalls the Brixton riots and how they started as well as how the place has changed over the years.
Brixton Academy has one of London's largest stages and has hosted most of the famous bands you can name over the years.
Visit the house where David Bowie was born and also his mural which has become a shrine.
Brixton also was home to the UK's first department store and Electric Avenue, the first market street to be lit by electricity.
There's even an underground river which had a coffin floating down it, the Ambrose Chapel from Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much and a functioning windmill!

Brixton is a district within the London Borough of Lambeth in south London.
Around 1067, a man called 'Brihtsige' built a stone structure and it became a regular community meeting place known as 'Brixis-tane', a saxon term meaning 'at the stone of Brihtsige'. Over time, Brixistane morphed into the name Brixton.
Electric Avenue was one of the first streets to have electric street lighting installed and is home to the famous Brixton market.
By the 1960’s, the markets were the go to place for Caribbean's seeking out rare things like Scotch bonnet peppers and salt-fish to make things like patties, and fritters and authentic Jerk based dishes previously only available ‘back home’.
The covered in Brixton Village & Market Row markets are intrinsically linked to the history giving the area its strong Afro-Caribbean culture and ambience.
The Barrier Block is a daunting block of flats often mistaken for Brixton Prison. It's a truly brutalist-inspired structure designed by a Polish lady. The harsh, uninviting sight of it has a fearful reputation which it has also lived up to in the past.
Brixton has birthed some of the most influential aspects of modern culture in British society since the mid-20th century.
The Brixton Splash is a street festival held on the first Sunday of every August till 7pm with sound systems, soul food stalls and live music. It celebrates the historic local culture and provides free art workshops and volunteer opportunities for the youngsters.
Windrush Square was named to mark the 50 years since the Empire Windrush ship arrived with 492 initial migrants from Jamaica three years after World War Two in 1948. It features both the United Kingdom's national war memorial to African and Caribbean service personnel who fought in the First and Second World Wars and the Grade II-listed Georgian building housing the Black Cultural Archives. The archives are free to visit Tuesday to Saturday from 10-6pm.
Brixton is just as famous for its vitality and tolerance as it is for riots and crime. It was the scene of riots in 1981 during a time of deep social unrest. To tackle the rising crime from gangs, Police attempted to carry out an extremely controversial new law; the 'sus law' which allowed stop and search procedures by plain clothed officers on the mere suspicion of possible wrongdoing by any individual.
Within 5 years, 9 cinemas were built mostly under the railway arches in Brixton. The Ritzy Picturehouse on Coldharbour Lane, opened in 1911 as the Electric Pavilion and is widely regarded as one of the first purpose-built cinemas for film in the UK. It's the only one of those 9 to still exist.
This place is a vibrant melting pot of colour, sound, people, variety, smell and activity with a rare freedom that invites you to be you, earning it much admiration and pride.
Robert David Jones was born in Brixton and became known to the world as David Bowie. He was a beloved Brixtonian and this particular mural, created in his memory, is popular with visitors and tourists.
Pop Brixton has transformed a disused plot of land into a trendy space for food and live entertainment, seven days a week, till late. Its made out of old shipping containers, a prettier version of the successful Boxpark concept.

Borough Market is London’s most famous market, and yes it’s fantastic and has so much history, but there are plenty of other markets in London that locals love and that are just as great (and less crowded!) In this video I’m sharing eight Londoner-loved markets that are worth a visit to, whether it’s your first time visiting London or you’ve been here many times before.
Many of these London markets are hidden gems that tourists don’t usually read about. Some of them are centrally located to some of the major London attractions, but many of them require you to venture off the boring, beaten path, because well, that’s where you always find the best stuff when you travel. Brixton is a district in the south of London, England, within the London Borough of Lambeth. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London. Brixton experienced a rapid rise in population during the 19th century as communications with central London improved.
Brixton is mainly residential with a prominent street market and substantial retail sector. It is a multiethnic community, with a large percentage of its population of Afro-Caribbean descent. It lies within Inner London and is bordered by Stockwell, Clapham, Streatham, Camberwell, Tulse Hill, Balham and Herne Hill. The district houses the main offices of Lambeth London Borough Council. Brixton is 2.7 miles (4.3 km) south-southeast from the geographical centre of London near Brixton Underground station on the Victoria Line.

Here are 7 London markets that you have to visit for some of London's best street food and shopping. The best markets in London are Camden Market, Covent Garden Market, Borough Market, Greenwich Market, Brixton Market, Portobello Road Market, and Brick Lane Market in Shoreditch.
1. Camden Market -
At Camden Market we went to Mac Factory for mac-n-cheese and Meat Head Mexican Grill for chicken chipotle tacos. Then we explored the Camden Market shops.
2. Covent Garden Market -
Covent Garden is in London's West End. The Jubilee Market is perfect for souvenirs. Covent Garden Market has dining, shopping, and street performers. Also stop by Seven Dials Market and Neal's Yard.
3. Borough Market -
Borough Market is one of the largest and oldest markets in London. We got coffee from Monmouth, a cheese toastie from Kappacasein Dairy, and a doughnut from Bread Ahead.
4. Greenwich Market -
This market is covered and has art, food stalls, and antiques. We visited 15grams Independent Specialty Coffee, the Fudge Patch, and Goddards at Greenwich for traditional British pie and mash.
5. Brixton Market -
Brixton is a neighborhood in south central London. For lunch we went to Fish, Wings, and Tings inside Brixton Village. It's a Caribbean restaurant known for jerk chicken, cod fritters, and rum punch.
6. Portobello Road Market (Notting Hill) -
Notting Hill is a neighborhood in west London known for the Portobello Road Market. The famous market has antiques, produce, and street food.
7. Shoreditch Brick Lane Market -
Shoreditch is an East London neighborhood known for street art, pubs, markets, and street food. Beigel Bake is the place for salt beef bagels. Old Spitalfields Market is a covered market with tons of food and shopping options.

Walk around Brixton, starting at the Skatepark, walk past Brixton O2 Academy, Pop Brixton and into Brixton Market, cross at Brixton Station and along the high street to Ritzy Picturehouse.
Brixton is a district in south London, part of the London Borough of Lambeth, England. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London.
Brixton is mainly residential, though includes Brixton Market and a substantial retail sector. It is a multi-ethnic community, with a large percentage of its population of Afro-Caribbean descent. It lies within Inner London and is bordered by Stockwell, Clapham, Streatham, Camberwell, Tulse Hill, Balham and Herne Hill.
