Dewsbury Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of West Yorkshire, and around nine miles south, and slightly west, of central Leeds, is the town of Dewsbury.

The name 'Dewsbury' derives from 'Dewi's fortification', where Dewi is an Old Welsh personal name (although the England-Wales border is around 70 miles away). Geographically, the town centre lies just north of the River Calder.

It is believed that a place of worship has stood where Dewsbury Minster is located (at the start of the walk) from as early as 627 AD when St Paulinus preached at the crossing point of the River Calder. The minster itself dates from the 13th century, albeit with much rebuilding work in the late 19th century. In 1809 the Reverend Patrick Brontë was made a curate at Dewsbury Minster. He would later become a father to six children including authors Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë.

In the early 14th century a royal charter was granted by Edward II for a weekly market at nearby Thornhill, before moving to Dewsbury. Established in 1318, Dewsbury Market was hailed as one of the finest in the north. When a plague swept through the area in the late 16th century the market closed. It would not be until 1740 that it was reopened, following public demand.

Following an Act of Parliament in 1699, the rivers Aire and Calder were made navigable by cargo boats. This effectively provided Dewsbury with a trade link to the North Sea and continental Europe. A subsequent Act of Parliament in 1758 paved the way for the Calder and Hebble Navigation, which would later link up to the Rochdale Canal. In short, this meant that Dewsbury was well poised for growth following the Industrial Revolution. Several textile mills started to appear in the town - some of which can be seen today, albeit repurposed for other functions.

In 1848 the railway arrived in Dewsbury courtesy of the London and Northwestern Railway. This ushered in a period of growth in the town whose population rose from around 4,500 in 1801 to around 30,000 in 1891. Today the station provides direct services to Leeds in around 15 to 20 minutes and to Manchester in around 40 to 80 minutes, depending on stops.

From 1886 to 1889 Dewsbury Town Hall was built. The building is Grade II listed, and is presently used as a 700-seater concert hall alongside function and meeting rooms.

STOCKPORT | The REAL side of Stockport near Manchester

We visit Stockport near Manchester for a walk around Stockport Town Centre to see the city streets, shops, bars, restaurants and people to check out the things to see in Stockport.
Also watch Whitby ????????

Stockport is a town in Greater Manchester, England. Situated just 7 miles south-east of Manchester CIty Centre, Stockport is fast becoming a cool place to be so we went to the town centre to see what it's really like.

This is the first Gimbal Walk TV walking tour around the town so it would be good to get your comments and feedback to tell us if we should return!

In addition to city centre treasures, Stockport has many beautiful walks and gorgeous scenery, with 14 nature reserves to choose from including one of England's first country parks, the 32 acre Etherow Country Park, alongside other notable reserves including Abney Hall Park, Mersey Vale Nature Park and Reddish Vale

Is Stockport in Manchester or Cheshire?
Most of the borough, including the historic town of Stockport, lies in the historic county of Cheshire, but it includes an area west of the River Tame and north of the River Mersey in the historic county of Lancashire.

Stockport was famous for hat production and Stockport exported over 6 million hats around the world, meaning that there was a little bit of Stockport in so many cities and countries.

Stockport's position as one of the most affluent areas of Greater Manchester, alongside Trafford and Bury, is bolstered by relatively quick access to areas of Cheshire and Derbyshire, and significant train links through Stockport and Cheadle Hulme towards Manchester city centre.

Stockport is a borough situated South-East of Manchester city centre consisting of Cheadle, Cheadle Hulme, Marple, Bredbury, Reddish, Woodley and Romiley. The borough was made famous in the 19th Century as the home of the nation’s hatting industry, which history is celebrated in the Hat Works, the UK’s only dedicated hatting museum.

Stockport’s architecture is enriched with history. The borough is home to over 380 listed buildings, 6 ancient monuments and one of the most iconic viaducts in the UK, and offers visitors opportunity to visit several medieval and Tudor halls, notably Peel Hall in Heaton Moor and Bramall Hall in Bramall. The Plaza, the UK’s only remaining super cinema and variety theatre, stands out in its Art Deco stylings, and Stockport Viaduct is a predominant landmark of Stockport and has been featured in many LS Lowry paintings.

Culturally, Stockport has a brilliant range of spots to visit, from Staircase House, that’ll take you on a trip through the 14th to the 20th century, to Stockport’s Air Raid Shelters, originally opened in 1939, and built to provide shelter for up to 3,850 people.

In addition to city centre treasures, Stockport has many beautiful walks and gorgeous scenery, with 14 nature reserves to choose from including one of England’s first country parks, the 32 acre Etherow Country Park, alongside other notable reserves including Abney Hall Park, Mersey Vale Nature Park and Reddish Vale Country Park.

When it comes to shopping, Stockport town has plenty to offer, from the high street stores of Merseyway Shopping Centre and The Peel Hall centre, to the independent wares of the Stockport Market Place, which offers over 50 business selling everything from beer to buttons and the Cheadle Makers Market, which brings together finest food, drink, art and craft producers in the area. Speaking of food and drink, Stockport has plenty of offerings for all tastes, including the unique, menu-less Where The Light Gets In, plus opportunity to visit the historic Robinsons Brewery for a tour and beer tastings.

Stockport has fantastic transport links to the Manchester City Centre meaning a day out in this historic borough is a perfect location to visit.

Drive Around Batley Kirklees West Yorkshire United Kingdom

I spent couple of hours in the Batley, Kirklees in West Yorkshire, England. In this video you will see me driving my car around Batley.

Batley is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire, England. Batley lies south-west of Leeds, north-west of Wakefield and Dewsbury, south-east of Bradford and north-east of Huddersfield. Batley is part of the Heavy Woollen District.

Places to see in ( Ramsbottom - UK )

Places to see in ( Ramsbottom - UK )

Ramsbottom is a market town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bury, Greater Manchester, England. The population at the 2011 census was 17,872. Historically in Lancashire, it is on the River Irwell in the West Pennine Moors, 3.9 miles (6.3 km) north-northwest of Bury, and 12 miles (19 km) north-northwest of Manchester. Its name is believed to derive from Old English ramm and botm, meaning valley of the ram. Its Victorian architecture, Pennine landscape and industrial heritage, including the East Lancashire Railway, contribute to heritage tourism in the town.

The Ramsbottom parish formed in 1844 was a mile and a quarter in length and about three-quarters of a mile in width in the Lower Tottington township in the valley of the River Irwell that extends from Bury to Rossendale. It is bounded to the south by Holcombe Brook and Summerseat; to the north by Edenfield, Irwell Vale, Stubbins and the hamlets of Chatterton and Strongstry; to the west by Holcombe and to the east by Shuttleworth and Turn Village. The area is characterised by its position on the south side of the West Pennine Moors. The high ground rises sharply on either side of the town with Holcombe Moor, Harcles Hill and Bull Hill to the west and Top O' Th' Hoof, Harden Moor, Scout Moor and Whittle Hill to the east.

The railway arrived in Ramsbottom in 1846 when the Manchester, Bury and Rossendale Railway Company built the railway from Bury to a junction with the Manchester and Bolton Railway and extended the line northwards to Rawtenstall and opened a railway station in the town centre. The line between Bury and Rawtenstall remained open to passengers until 1972 and for goods until 1980. This line is used by the East Lancashire Railway, a modern heritage railway which opened in 1987. The district straddles the A676, A56 and B6214 roads with its centre 4 miles (6.4 km) north of Bury, 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Rawtenstall and 6 miles (9.7 km) north east of Bolton. The M66 motorway runs to the east of the town, linking it north to the M65 motorway and south to the M62 motorway and the Manchester Outer Ring Road.

The skyline is dominated by the Peel Monument which stands on Holcombe Moor, a memorial to Sir Robert Peel, the 19th century British Prime Minister and creator of the modern British police force. The tower stands 128 feet (39.0 m) tall on Holcombe Moor. There are spectacular views over West Yorkshire, North Lancashire, Greater Manchester, North Wales and the Lancashire Plain. From the top of the tower it is possible to see Blackpool Tower on a clear day.

Ramsbottom is on the path of the Irwell Sculpture Trail. The Tilted Vase by Edward Allington, a sculpture both classical in shape to reflect the surrounding buildings but apparently bolted together to reflect the old industries, is located in Market Place. This piece of work, weighing around two tons and locally known as the Urn or Urnie, was funded with £250,000 of National Lottery money. Nuttall Park is a large park with facilities for bowls, tennis, football and public events. The park hosts regular fun fairs and family events, and is a popular attraction with locals and tourists alike.

( Ramsbottom - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Ramsbottom . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Ramsbottom - UK

Bramall Hall - Stockport - Great Manchester - England 4K Footage (Drone)

Bramall Hall is a superb example of a Tudor Manor House with origins dating back to the Middle Ages.

The Hall, one of the most beautiful treasures of England, is of great national importance. The magnificent 16th Century wall paintings, striking Elizabethan plaster ceiling, the Victorian Kitchens and Servants’ Quarters give this Hall its unique charm.

The Hall offers unique insights into the families and servants who lived and worked here. It stands in about 70 acres of parkland designed in the Victorian Romantic style. It offers woodland walks with intriguing glimpses of the Hall itself and of the brooks and lakes.

map of Manchester England

Manchester (/ˈmæntʃɪstər, -tʃɛs-/) is the most-populous city and metropolitan borough in North West England and Greater Manchester, England. The city has the country's fifth-largest population at 547,627 (as of 2018) and lies within the United Kingdom's second-most populous urban area, with a population of 2.7 million, third most-populous county, at around 2.8 million. It is fringed by the Cheshire Plain to the south, the Pennines to the north and east, and an arc of towns with which it forms a continuous conurbation. The local authority for the city is Manchester City Council. Manchester is one of the claimants to the title of second city of the United Kingdom.

The recorded history of Manchester began with the civilian settlement associated with the Roman fort of Mamucium or Mancunium, which was established in about AD 79 on a sandstone bluff near the confluence of the rivers Medlock and Irwell. Although historically and traditionally a part of Lancashire, areas of Cheshire south of the River Mersey were incorporated into Manchester in the 20th century. The first to be included, Wythenshawe, was added to the city in 1931. Throughout the Middle Ages Manchester remained a manorial township, but began to expand at an astonishing rate around the turn of the 19th century. Manchester's unplanned urbanisation was brought on by a boom in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution, and resulted in it becoming the world's first industrialised city. Manchester achieved city status in 1853. The Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894, creating the Port of Manchester and directly linking the city to the Irish Sea, 36 miles (58 km) to the west. Its fortune declined after the Second World War, owing to deindustrialisation, but the IRA bombing in 1996 led to extensive investment and regeneration. Following successful redevelopment after the IRA bombing, Manchester was the host city for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.

The city is notable for its architecture, culture, musical exports, media links, scientific and engineering output, social impact, sports clubs and transport connections. Manchester Liverpool Road railway station was the world's first inter-city passenger railway station. At the University of Manchester, Ernest Rutherford first split the atom in 1917, Frederic C. Williams, Tom Kilburn and Geoff Tootill developed the world's first stored-program computer in 1948, and Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov isolated the first graphene in 2004.Manchester's buildings display a variety of architectural styles, ranging from Victorian to contemporary architecture. The widespread use of red brick characterises the city, much of the architecture of which harks back to its days as a global centre for the cotton trade. Just outside the immediate city centre are a large number of former cotton mills, some of which have been left virtually untouched since their closure, while many have been redeveloped as apartment buildings and office space. Manchester Town Hall, in Albert Square, was built in the Gothic revival style and is seen as one of the most important Victorian buildings in England.

Manchester also has a number of skyscrapers built in the 1960s and 1970s, the tallest being the CIS Tower near Manchester Victoria station until the Beetham Tower was completed in 2006. The latter exemplifies a new surge in high-rise building. It includes a Hilton hotel, a restaurant and apartments. The largest skyscraper is now Deansgate Square South Tower, at 201 metres (659 feet). The Green Building, opposite Oxford Road station, is a pioneering eco-friendly housing project, while the recently completed One Angel Square, is one of the most sustainable large buildings in the world.

The award-winning Heaton Park in the north of the city borough is one of the largest municipal parks in Europe, covering 610 acres (250 ha) of parkland. The city has 135 parks, gardens, and open spaces.

Two large squares hold many of Manchester's public monuments. Albert Square has monuments to Prince Albert, Bishop James Fraser, Oliver Heywood, William Gladstone and John Bright. Piccadilly Gardens has monuments dedicated to Queen Victoria, Robert Peel, James Watt and the Duke of Wellington. The cenotaph in St Peter's Square is Manchester's main memorial to its war dead. Designed by Edwin Lutyens, it echoes the original on Whitehall in London. The Alan Turing Memorial in Sackville Park commemorates his role as the father of modern computing. A larger-than-life statue of Abraham Lincoln by George Gray Barnard in the eponymous Lincoln Square (having stood for many years in Platt Fields) was presented to the city by Mr and Mrs Charles Phelps Taft of Cincinnati, Ohio, to mark the part Lancashire played in the cotton famine and American Civil War of 1861–1865. A Concorde is on display near Manchester Airport.

Manchester has six designated local nature reserves: Chorlton Water Park, Blackley Forest, Clayton Vale and Chorlton Ees, #manchestermap

142 004 manchester bredbury 1st October 2020

Was hoping I'd get 142 004 as part of my day and the 14.19 Piccadilly-Rose Hill generated the magic numbers for this trip out to Bredbury on 1st October 2020. It's the only one one of the original GMPTE orange ones left (which were the first ones I ever went on) so a bit of a mini celebrity to me in that respect.

The fact its running to Rose Hill via Bredbury is also a bit of a wierd one, it's destination should be New Mills Central but a couple have been diverted to Rose Hill to keep some sort of service available until December (the original plan was to axe the entire service until then but after many complaints 3 trains a day are still serving the station - at the end of October a more regular but not full service will take their place before hopefully going back to normal in December). Two run out Piccadilly-Guide Bridge-Rose Hill with one running via Bredbury and in the other direction it's two via Bredbury and one via Guide Bridge so not exactly regular service. Interestingly there are signs on the station at Bredbury quite clearly stating that there is no service to Rose Hill until December!
