Istanbul Walking Tour - Archeology Park and the Byzantine Aqueduct [ 4K HD/ 60fps ]

Continuing our virtual tour video, we enter Saraçhane Arkeoloji Park and after just a few moments we get our first glimpse of the the open air ruins and excavation site.

It's a beautiful park and the ancient site with truly cool artifacts left from 5th century early Byzantine times. Making our way around the fence we find an opening and enter the throughway back and forth the 4th century Byzantine walls.

From here we will make our way to the Valens Aqueduct (Bozdogan Kemeri). The Aqueduct of Valens was a Roman aqueduct system built in the late 4th century AD, to supply Constantinople. Construction of the aqueduct began during the reign of the Roman emperor Constantius II and was completed in 373 by the emperor Valens. The aqueduct remained in use for many centuries. It was extended and maintained by the Byzantines and the Ottomans. The Bozdoğan Kemeri bridge of the Aqueduct of Valens had a length of 971 metres (3,186 ft) and a maximum height of about 29 metres (63 metres above sea level) with a constant slope of 1:1000.

As we continue to explore we see the statue of Fatih Sultan Mehmet Anit circling around to pass under the viaduct and into a neighbourhood square.

Here we see a market featuring olive soaps, butchers, cheese shops, spice stores, alongside tea houses and restaurants. The square is complete with a central green space and lots of wonderful Fatih Buildings.

As we leave the square the road forks up to a breathtaking panorama of Istanbul’s skyline.

The scenery continues into the historic neighbourhoods, mosques and school houses before we end the walk on the busy Atatürk Boulevard.

Walking In Istanbul Sultanahmet The Most Important District Of Istanbul's Historical Peninsula-4K

If you are coming to Istanbul for a tourist trip, we recommend that you spend most of your time in the Historic Peninsula of the city. This part of the city has many unmissable experiences and is home to many of the famous attractions. It is located in the south of the Golden Horn, the historical peninsula of Istanbul, and consists of regions such as Beyazıt, Eminönü, Fatih, Kumkapı, Sirkeci, Süleymaniye, Sultanahmet, and Tahtakale. In this article, we have listed the places you must see while visiting the historical peninsula of Istanbul as a tourist.

Sultanahmet
Sultanahmet is by far the most important district of Istanbul’s historical peninsula. It is the heart of the Byzantine, Constantine, and Ottoman empires. Today, people still talk about Sultanahmet as the historical heart of Istanbul.

The tram-lined main street, Divan Yolu, is the backbone of Sultanahmet, while Sultanahmet Square is the obvious starting point for your touristic trips. It is in a central location within easy reach of Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Square, Hippodrome, and Basilica Cistern.
Sultanahmet (the Old City) is one of the most visited sites in Istanbul. A tourist center combining the history, architecture, culture and art, Istanbul’s old city and historical zone, communications hub and an important sightseeing, entertainment & shopping area for the tourists for having a nice Istanbul old city walking tour.
Sultanahmet square, also known as Hippodrome and surrounded by the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, is a popular meeting point and very impressive tourist zone of Sultanahmet leading to all historical sites around Sultanahmet.

Beyazit
If you leave Sultanahmet Square behind and start walking uphill on Divan Yolu, you will eventually arrive at Beyazıt. When you arrive at Beyazıt Square, you can see the Beyazıt Tower and Beyazıt University, which was founded on May 30, 1453, the day after Fatih’s conquest of Istanbul. Beyazıt Square is also one of the main entrances of the Grand Bazaar. In this town, there is also an interesting bookstore ( Booksellers’ Bazaar).

Eminonu
Eminönü, which is completely within the old walls, has been an important settlement for transportation and trade throughout history. After the 10th century, Latin colonies, mostly Genoese, settled in this Byzantine town and built their own piers to trade. During the Ottoman Empire, the region continued to play the role of a commercial center and gained some added value with the Sirkeci train station.

The inner city ferry piers and the city bus terminal by the sea, the New Mosque, the Spice Bazaar, and the various shops around these landmarks are the most distinctive features of Eminönü.

Sirkeci
The most important attraction is Sirkeci train station, which was once the last station of the Eastern Express. The main street is called Ankara Caddesi and climbs up the hill to Cağaloğlu, which used to be the press center.

In addition to the ferries to the Islands, there are also the ferries to the Harem on the Anatolian side, on the coastal part of Sirkeci. The Great Post Office, which is the building of the postal administration of Istanbul, is the largest postal building in Turkey.

Fatih
The name of this district comes from Fatih Sultan Mehmed. Today, it is still considered the real Istanbul. It is also one of the most conservative districts of Istanbul.

Valens Aqueduct ( Bozdogan Aqueduct), Porphyrogenitus Palace (Tekfur Palace ), Fethiye Museum, Kariye Mosque, Sultan Yavuz Selim Mosque, and the famous Fatih Mosque, located on Atatürk Boulevard.

The tombs of Mehmed the Conqueror, Yavuz Sultan Selim, and some of the prominent statesmen of the Ottoman Empire, including Gazi Osman Pasha, are in Fatih.

????Aqueduct & Suleymaniye Mosque Walking Tour Istanbul | 2023 | 4K 60fps

This walking tour was recorded on Thursday, March 9th, 2023 starting at 15:30

The Aqueduct of Valens (Turkish: Valens Su Kemeri, Ancient Greek: Ἀγωγὸς τοῦ ὕδατος, romanized: Agōgós tou hýdatos, lit. 'aqueduct') was a Roman aqueduct system built in the late 4th century AD, to supply Constantinople – the capital of the eastern Roman empire. Construction of the aqueduct began during the reign of the Roman emperor Constantius II (r. 337–361) and was completed in 373 by the emperor Valens (r. 364–378). The aqueduct remained in use for many centuries. It was extended and maintained by the Byzantines and the Ottomans.

Initially, the Aqueduct of Valens carried water from springs at Danımandere and Pınarca; the channels from each spring met at Dağyenice. This 4th-century first phase of the system was 268 kilometres (167 miles) long.[1] A second, 5th-century phase added a further 451 kilometres (280 miles) of conduits that took water from Vize, 120 kilometres (75 miles) away from Constantinople.

The final and most visible aqueduct bridge in the system survives in the Fatih district of Istanbul, Turkey. Named in Turkish: Bozdoğan Kemeri, lit. 'Aqueduct of the Grey Falcon', it is an important landmark in the city, with its arches passing over Atatürk Boulevard (Atatürk Bulvarı). The Bozdoğan Kemeri spans the valley between the hills that are today occupied by the Istanbul University and the Fatih Mosque, formerly the site of the Church of the Holy Apostles. The surviving section is 921 metres long, about 50 metres less than the original length.
