Middleburg remains an important center for the coal mining industry in Mpumalanga and South Africa. It is the capital of the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality and serves as a hub for commercial activities related to mining and agriculture. The town has diversified its economy to include other sectors such as manufacturing, services, and agriculture.
Apart from its mining sector, Middleburg is also known for its agricultural activities. The fertile surrounding farmlands produce crops such as maize, wheat, sunflowers, and citrus fruits. Livestock farming, particularly sheep and cattle rearing, is also prevalent in the area.

Bloemfontein fountain of flowers or blooming fountain; also known as Bloem) is the capital city of the province of Free State of South Africa; and, as the judicial capital of the nation, one of South Africa's three national capitals (the other two being Cape Town, the legislative capital, and Pretoria, the administrative capital) and is the seventh largest city in South Africa.
The city of Bloemfontein hosts the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa, the Franklin Game Reserve, Naval Hill, the Maselspoort Resort and the Sand du Plessis Theatre. The city hosts numerous museums, including the National Women's Monument, the Anglo-Boer War Museum, the National Museum, and the Oliewenhuis Art Museum. Bloemfontein also host sub-Saharan Africa's first digital planetarium, the Naval Hill Planetarium and Boyden Observatory, an astronomical research observatory erected by Harvard University.
Free State Provincial Government building Bloemfontein forms part of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, which was upgraded from a Local Municipality in 2011. Bloemfontein is located in central South Africa on the southern edge of the Highveld at an elevation of 1,400 metres (4,600 ft), bordering on the semi-arid region of the Karoo. The area is generally flat with occasional hills (koppies in Afrikaans) and the general vegetation is Highveld grassland. Bloemfontein experiences a semi-arid climate (Köppen: BSk ), with hot summer days and cooler, dry winters, often with frosts.
Bloemfontein suburbs include Heidedal to the east and southeast, Bain's Vlei, Woodland Hills Wildlife Estate, Brandwag, Ehrlich Park, Fauna, Fichardt Park, Fleurdal, Gardenia Park, Generaal De Wet, Hospitaalpark, Kiepersol, Lourier Park, Park West, Pellissier, Uitsig, Universitas, Westdene, Wilgehof and Willows to the south of the city. To the west of Bloemfontein, you will find Langenhoven Park. To the north you will find Arboretum, Baysvalley, Bayswater, Dan Pienaar, Helicon Heights, Heuwelsig, Hillsboro, Hillside, Hilton, Naval Hill, Navalsig, Noordhoek, Pentagon Park, Panorama Park, and Waverley. To the north east you will find Roodewal and Vallombrosa. The predominantly black suburbs are; Rocklands, Phahameng, Phelindaba, Bloemanda, Bochabela and the most historic Batho where the Maphikela House (where the African National Congress started) is situated.botshabelo and thaba nchu townships
The Free State Stadium and the surrounding sports complex is the main sports venue in the city and province. The venue was the hosting stadium of the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa matches played in Bloemfontein. There are several other sports venues in the city, however, including facilities belonging to the university, schools and sports clubs.other stadium's in the city is Mangaung Oval, Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium and Clive Solomons Stadium.
Every year Bloemfontein, the 'City of Roses', celebrates the 'Bloemfontein Rose Festival', known also as the 'Mangaung Rose Festival', in October—the cool month in which roses in the Free State bloom best. Bloemfontein is well connected with rail.It is located on the most important rail junction between Johannesburg and Cape Town, with daily trains to Port Elizabeth, East London and Johannesburg. Bloemfontein has two airports New Tempe Aerodrome and Bram Fischer International Airport. New Tempe Aerodrome has no scheduled flights, it is used as a training facility for aviators and schools. Bram Fischer International Airport has scheduled flights to all South Africa's major cities.

In this episode I have travelled between the township of Botshabelo to the town of Aliwal North covering approximately 150 kms of gravel roads.
In November 2021 I left Malta ???????? for a solo trip around the world on a Yamaha XT600e.

Blyde river Canyon :
The Blyde River Canyon, officially the Motlatse Canyon is a significant natural feature of South Africa, located in Mpumalanga, and forming the northern part of the Drakensberg escarpment. Located in the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve, it is 25 kilometres (16 mi) in length and is, on average, around 750 metres (2,461 ft) deep. The Blyderivierpoort Dam, when full, is at an altitude of 665 metres (2,182 ft). The canyon consists mostly of red sandstone. The highest point of the canyon, Mariepskop, is 1,944 metres (6,378 ft) above sea level, whilst its lowest point where the river leaves the canyon is slightly less than 561 metres (1,841 ft) above sea level. This means that by some measure the canyon is 1,383 metres (4,537 ft) deep.
Bourke's Luck Potholes :
This geological feature and day visitors' attraction, named after Bernard Thomas Bourke (brother of Eddie Bourke), is situated at the confluence of the Treur and Blyde Rivers, on the reserve's western boundary 24°40′28″S 30°48′39″E. The reserve's nature conservation headquarters is located here, beside the village of Moremela, at the canyon's southern, or upper reaches.
Sustained kolks in the Treur River's plunge pools have eroded a number of cylindrical potholes or giant's kettles, which can be viewed from the crags above. It was named after a local prospector, Tom Bourke, who predicted the presence of gold, though he found none himself. The pedestrian bridges connect the various overlooks of the potholes and the gorge downstream.

The Ndebele's vivid geometric designs and striking traditional clothing are amongst Africa’s most eye-catching, as you’ll discover when you visit one of Mpumalanga’s Ndebele villages.
The little town of Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga’s cultural heartland is home to the Kghodwana Cultural Village where you can follow the the last 1000 years of Ndebele history through to modern times. The people in this region are linguistically related to KwaZulu-Natal’s Zulu tribe and the Ndebele of Zimbabwe.

A Day At Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge
On our 3rd on safari in Madikwe Game Reserve, I take you on a quick tour at the main area of Buffalo Ridge Safari Lodge. The lodge is community owned, so the local community benefits from tourism to Madikwe Game Reserve.
The lodge has a really peaceful vibe throughout camp. It's widely setup and the main area has a lot of places where you can sit down, read a book or just relax. On top of the ridge there's a great sundeck with swimming pool overlooking the game reserve.
Ofcourse we also went out in the bush. It was a little bit quiet. We did manage to find rhino. Such a huge and impressive animal, I never get bored watching them. I'm also pretty happy with the squirrel shot, as he rushed into a hole in the ground as soon as the guide started the car.
