10 Reasons Why Bakewell is one of the Best Places to Live in the UK

What are the reasons why Bakewell is one of the best places to live in the United Kingdom? My attention has been drawn to the town of Bakewell since the time I found it on my subscribers' list as one of Britain's best towns to live in. I, however, have been unable to do justice to the small market town located in the Dales of the county of Derbyshire which is some 21 kilometers southwest of the city of Sheffield. I found a lot of interesting things about the town and I can only deal with those things if I dedicate an entire video to the town located in the southeastern corner of the Peak District National Park. Therefore, follow along as I show you 10 reasons why Bakewell is one of Britain’s best towns.

1. Countryside
The first thing that caught my attention was the countryside. It made no serious impression on me when I first read about that in an article in The Sunday Times of September 2019. The journal then described the attractions and allures of living within the town in the Peak District National Park and Derbyshire Dales. Now, I vividly remember the attractiveness of those stone cottages, green valleys, and rugged moorland. Yet, that’s not all there is to be remembered about the countryside Bakewell. Imagine living close to this natural and waking up every day to the sight of bright sunrise appearing over the mountain. I'm sure you’d want to consider such a town one of the best towns to live in Britain.
2. Good and independent schools
Other reasons you would love to live in Bakewell are its schools and their quality. As small as the town is, it has great schools. Three of its principal primary schools enjoy top ratings in England. And its Lady Manners School stands tall among its peers, judging from the performances of its students and products. To affirm the quality of its schools, search out the Bakewell CofE Infant School at Bath Street and see its “Good” inspection rating. Child 1st (Bakewell) Day Nursery at Derbyshire House, which is childcare on non-domestic, also has an equally good rating to help you care for your kids’ formative years. Pilsley CofE Primary School at Pilsley Village and Bakewell Methodist Junior School are examples its primary schools that are doing so great. You can also talk about the independent St Anselm’s Preparatory School and College. This cares for pupils aged 3-16.
3. Shopping
I guess you want to live in a town where you won’t have a hard time or need so much travel to shop. Great! Bakewell is one of the best Britain’s towns to live in if it is the shopping you’re after. This little town is replete with these as they're packed to the rafters with gifts and crafts. You could easily pick up practical and functional gears that also function outdoor. Your kitchen accessories and photographic services are at your fingertip. You don’t need to look any further. Bakewell is a shopaholic’s delight where you’ll get more than you bargain for. In fact, you could spend days in just one shop if you have the luxury. You’d love, for example, Granby Arcade, for the unusual. With many unique boutiques, art galleries, and gift items, you will certainly be able to find something hard to come by elsewhere.
4. Road connections
The town of Bakewell is well connected by road, thanks to its location in the north of the Midlands. It is adequately served by the motorway network.
Bakewell - One of the best places to live in the UK.

Scotland Vacation Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations

Emerald-green fields, hills covered by heather, sheep herds, lakes, beautiful castles and forts… This is Scotland, and of course the men wearing tartan, pipe music and whiskey. The character of the country on the Northern part of the British island can not be missed. Because of their monument status, the castle of Edinburgh and 16 thousand other buildings are under protection. During the summer, several festivals and cultural events here and in Glasgow await the visitors. The old castles, forts and monasteries tell us about a long and eventful past and such heroes as Wallace ‘The Braveheart’ or Rob Roy. Their deeds were sung by such Scottish poets and writers as Sir Walter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson or Robert Burns. Scotland is famous of its Celtic monuments, the beautiful landscape of the Highlands and the monster of Loch Ness.

Explore the Gems of Haddington: 5 Fascinating Attractions You Can't Miss

Hello and welcome to my channel where we explore chunks of Scottish history this episode will be full of it, thanks to the lovely people of this Scottish jewel called Haddington. Today I will show you 5 main places, that you can easily visit.

The first one is One of the two main streets in Haddington, Haddington’s High Street is an excellent place for Shopping, have to chat with locals, grabbing an ice cream or just enjoying a moment in this beautiful town. The history of this town was dating from the 6th century AD and it became part of Scotland in the 10th Century.

Second place to visit is stunning Lennoxlove house, that sits just on the outskirts of Haddington. Lennoxlove house is home of the duke of Hamilton built in the 14th century. Lennoxlove House is an intriguing mixture of time periods, with 18th-century Palladian and Victorian elegance blended with the earlier 14th-century tower house. The house also acts as a showcase for one of Britain's great art collections, featuring portraits, fine furniture, and ceramics. Much of the collection was brought here from Hamilton Palace

St. Marys Parish Church

3rd gem of this beautiful town is ST. Mary's Parish Church and I can tell you, I was not expecting it to be full of exciting history. Thanks to Janet, a local volunteer I had a chance to film it for you. Thank you Janet appreciate it.

Just outside of St. Mary's Parish Church lies the historic Nungate Bridge – known for its majestic stone bricks and tranquil atmosphere.
This attraction is a stone’s throw from St Mary’s Church, and it’s a great place to stop, relax, and watch the swans and ducks of Haddington frolicking in the River Tyne. It was also the punishment site, as criminals would regularly be hanged from the bridge!
From its green, you’re treated to a memorable skyline of town churches and buildings and the complex history and outstanding architecture that make this bridge an attraction you must see while in Haddington.

Traveling to the UK? Watch this video to discover highlights of Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland!

Are you traveling to United Kingdom for your next holiday? Are you still undecided on which countries to choose for your trip to the North Atlantic? If it is going to be your first time in United Kingdom, do not miss these highlights!

Comprising England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland lies in the North Atlantic Ocean. Many people confuse it with Great Britain, which is only a political entity of England, Scotland and Wales. The union between these four countries has a history of over 300 years and it greets its visitors with diverse culture, beautiful landscapes and fascinating history.

Scotland is known for its rolling hills and offers endless outdoor adventures along with historic castles, great seafood, culture and friendly people.

Wales is located in the southwestern part of the United Kingdom and is often overshadowed by its more popular neighbours. Despite being one of the smaller countries on the island, Wales packs a rich geographical diversity, beautiful coastlines, impressive castles and offers a distinct experience with a flavour of Welsh and Celtic cultures.

As the name suggests, Northern Ireland sits in the northern region of the island of Ireland. Once a part of Ireland, Northern Ireland is known for its food scene, sophisticated cities, the Causeway Coast and unpredictable weather.

Must visit places and experiences in United Kingdom (Scotland, Wales & Northern Ireland): Isle of Skye, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Loch Ness, Eilean Donan, Glen Coe, Conwy Castle, Brecon Beacons, Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire, Cardiff, Giant's Causeway, Londonderry, Belfast

Glasgow Central Station Scotland | Buchanan Street | Argyle Street | Walking tour | Nov 2022

Glasgow's principal architectural legacy is its impressive assemblage of stately Victorian mansions and public buildings, the product of wealth generated from manufacturing and trade. It gives the centre a solid, slightly staid dignity that is actually rather misleading. More svelte are the sublime designs of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, which dot the city; visiting a few of his buildings and interiors soon reveals his genius. The city – always proud of its working-class background – also innovatively displays its industrial heritage, while modern structures, many along the Clyde River, have quickly become local icons.

Collecting was big in Victorian times, so it's no surprise that Glasgow's architectural legacy from the period is complemented by some wonderful museums and galleries. Kelvingrove combines natural history and diverse objects from around the world with a first-rate art collection, while nearby Kelvin Hall will hold, from 2020, the University of Glasgow's eclectic Hunterian museum exhibits, paintings and sumptuous Mackintosh interior. On the Clyde, the Riverside holds an excellent ensemble of historic vehicles; to the south, the Burrell Collection (due to reopen in 2020) is an extraordinary corpus of archaeological treasures, objets d'art from around the world and fine paintings.

On this channel, we bring you the best walking tours for worldwide city destinations that I visit. I like to travel the world and visit interesting and diverse beautiful cities and places on our planet. Bothwell Castle 2011

Bothwell Castle 2011.

A look around Bothwell Castle, near Glasgow, Scotland.
July 2011.

To the S.E of Glasgow, built beside a bend in the river Clyde. A roughly rectangular castle but in one corner a cylindrical donjon. Part of this donjon dates back to the 13th century though most of the castle is 15th century.

Through the 13th and 14th centuries the castle regularly changed hands between the English and the Scots. It was eventually abandoned in the 18th Century.

It's only a few minutes drive from the M74 and within walking distance from local bus and train services. Well worth a visit.

Bothwell Castle is the largest and finest 13th century stone castle in Scotland, much fought over during the Wars of Independence.

Located in a beautiful setting overlooking the River Clyde, part of the original circular keep of Bothwell Castle survives.
The mighty medieval castle of Bothwell was built on a bluff above a bend in the River Clyde. Construction was started by Walter of Moray some time in the latter half of the 1200s. Invasion and repeated siege meant that the original design of the castle was never completed and what you see today is largely the work of the Earls of Douglas in the years around 1400.

Bothwell Castle is roughly rectangular in shape. Its west end is occupied by the remains of the massive circular donjon or keep. The donjon has been described as The finest piece of secular architecture that the Middle Ages have bequeathed to us in Scotland.

The east end of the castle comprises the great hall and the south east tower. The angle behind the great hall was, until about 1700, home to the north east tower, a large square tower built around 1400 to replace the siege-damaged donjon and considerably taller than the surviving south east tower. Only its base survives.

Walter of Moray's original design for Bothwell Castle can be traced from foundations visible in the grass to the north of the surviving structure. The donjon would have formed one angle of the castle, with circular towers on the site of the south east tower and to the north of the remains of the north east tower. Further north still would have been a strongly defended gatehouse with two circular towers. Curtain walls would have linked together the resulting polygon, producing a magnificent castle occupying an area of over 1.5 acres.
In 1296 wider events overtook Walter's son, William Moray of Bothwell. Edward I invaded Scotland (see our Historical Timeline) and captured both William and Bothwell Castle. By this time only the donjon and the neighbouring prison tower had been completed, connected by a short length of curtain wall: what the English captured would have looked a little like a circular tower house.

The Scots besieged the English garrison in Bothwell Castle for 14 months in 1298-9, only taking it when the defenders had succumbed to famine. In August 1301 Edward I came again to Bothwell Castle, bringing an army of 6,800 men and a high siege tower called a belfry, specially constructed to allow attackers direct access to the top of the donjon. The resulting siege lasted little more than three weeks before the English took the castle for the second time.

The English surrendered the castle to the Scots after the Battle of Bannockburn in June 1314, only to retake it yet again in October 1336 when it became the headquarters of King Edward III during his invasion of Scotland. In March 1337 a Scots army under Sir Andrew Murray of Bothwell, whose ancestral home this was, recaptured the castle: though in the process they destroyed the western side of the mighty donjon, leaving it much as you see it today.

By the late 1300s the castle had passed to the Earls of Douglas. They set to work to restore and extend Bothwell Castle, and in the quarter century to 1424 they constructed the north east and south east towers, the range between them including the great hall, and they connected it all together with the curtain walls.

Bothwell Castle was the property of the Crown through much of the 1500s, and in 1669 it passed to the Earls of Forfar. In the late 1600s they abandoned the castle in favour of Bothwell House, a large Palladian mansion built just to the east of the castle. Ironically this suffered from mining subsidence and had to be demolished in 1926, to be outlasted by the castle it replaced.

In 1935 Bothwell castle was placed in the care of the State, and today it is cared for by Historic Environment Scotland.

Visiting Hermitage Castle

Situated on a key route into Scotland, Hermitage Castle has been described as the 'guardhouse of the bloodiest valley in Britain'. Originally built by a Norman settler it was taken by the English during the Wars of Independence, seized by the Douglas clan and was the scene of a Royal scandal between Mary Queen of Scots and the Earl of Bothwell.

For those wishing to learn more about the Castle more information can be found here :-

I hope you enjoy the visit.
