The Most #Diamond ???? Producing District | Road Trip to Kono District | Koidu Town, Sierra Leone
Kono District is positioned in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. Koidu Town is the capital and largest city, also known as Sefadu and is Sierra Leone's fourth-largest city in Sierra Leone. The population of Kono District is 505,767 as of the (2015) censor.
Kono is the largest diamond producer in Sierra Leone and has produced about nine million carats of diamonds over the years, including some of the world's biggest diamonds.
Koidu Town is the diamond trading centre. The town borders Guinea in the east and is adjacent to the Liberian border.
Motema is the second-most populated city in the Kono district. The other principal towns in the district include Yengema, Tombodu, Jaiama Nimikor and Sewafe.

A TRIP TO BUNCE ISLAND, SIERRA LEONE. A PLACE OF NO RETURN. THE BIGGEST SLAVE FORT IN WEST AFRICA. 1
Located in the Sierra Leone River, a few miles north of Freetown, Bunce Island was home to one of the most lucrative slave trading operations in West Africa. ... From Bunce Island, the furthest point upriver that was accessible to commercial ships, slaves were sold to colonies in the West Indies and North America.
Between the late 1600s and 1807, Bunce Island’s fortified British trading post and ancillary buildings, known collectively as a slave castle, served as an international trade center and the pass-over point for commercial ships transporting enslaved people to the West Indies and North America. The island housed merchants’ quarters, a gunpowder magazine, a slave house, a cookhouse, and an office tower. The Chief Agent’s residence at the center of the castle stood in front of a “slave yard,” where captive men, women, and children were held before being loaded aboard commercial ships by the hundreds.
Located along the “rice coast” of West Africa, Bunce Island was considered a privileged access point for slave trade operations targeting individuals from rice cultivating areas to sell to rice plantation owners in South Carolina and Georgia. Bunce Island captives were also sold in Northern colonies such as New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Over more than a century, an estimated 30,000 people were sent to slavery from Bunce Island.
