Places to see in ( Chester - UK )

Places to see in ( Chester - UK )

Chester is a city in northwest England, founded as a Roman fortress in the 1st century A.D. It's known for its extensive Roman walls made of local red sandstone. In the old city, the Rows is a shopping district distinguished by 2-level covered arcades and Tudor-style half-timber buildings. A Roman amphitheatre, with ongoing excavations, lies just outside the old city's walls.

Chester is a walled city in Cheshire, England, on the River Dee, close to the border with Wales. Chester was founded as a castrum or Roman fort with the name Deva Victrix in the reign of the Emperor Vespasian in 79 AD. One of the main army camps in Roman Britain, Deva later became a major civilian settlement. In 689, King Æthelred of Mercia founded the Minster Church of West Mercia, which later became Chester's first cathedral, and the Saxons extended and strengthened the walls to protect the city against the Danes. Chester was one of the last cities in England to fall to the Normans. William the Conqueror ordered the construction of a castle, to dominate the town and the nearby Welsh border.

Chester is one of the best preserved walled cities in Britain. It has a number of medieval buildings, but some of the black-and-white buildings within the city centre are Victorian restorations. Apart from a 100-metre (330 ft) section, the listed Grade I walls are almost complete. The Industrial Revolution brought railways, canals, and new roads to the city, which saw substantial expansion and development – Chester Town Hall and the Grosvenor Museum are examples of Victorian architecture from this period.

Bus transport in the city is provided by Stagecoach Group and Arriva Buses Wales, the council owned and operated ChesterBus (formerly Chester City Transport). Chester formerly had two railway stations. Chester General railway station remains in use but Chester Northgate closed in 1969 as a result of the Beeching Axe. The Chester Canal had locks down to the River Dee. Canal boats could enter the river at high tide to load goods directly onto seagoing vessels.

Exploring Buckley Old Railway Station - abandoned closed disused - Mold Deeside Borderlands line

Today Buckley is served by a small station on the Borderlands line. This station opened in 1890 but it wasn't the first Buckley station.

The first was situated on a line built by the Wrexham, Mold and Connahs Quay Railway. It opened in 1866 with services running to Wrexham and remained open until 1890 when the Hawarden Loop line opened between Buckley Junction and Hawarden Bridge.

This station was briefly reopened as Buckley Old Station between 1893 and 1895. Between 1895 and 1965 Buckley Old Station continued as a goods station.

Today the original W,M and CQ Railway line (south of Buckley Junction), and the Hawarden Loop are known as the Borderlands line and are served by an hourly Transport for Wales service between Wrexham and Bidston.

The site of Buckley Old Station, half a mile North of the present Buckley Station remains with its overgrown platform, ruined station building and partly filled in bridge.

Chester has a delightful mix of Victorian, Gothic and modern styles and is easily reached as a lovely day-trip from London, just 2 hours by train. Downtown Chester has an unusual two-level system of shops called The Rows that will double your enjoyemtn. We take a walk with local guide Thomas Hands who shows us the Roman ruins, cathedral, encircling wall and much more.

Derby Friar gate Railway Line Series : Friar Gate bridge to Little Chester by drone in 4K -July 2021

Have you ever wondered where the Derby Friar gate railway Line used to run? Well in this video and future ones I will by flying my drone along the old route of the Derby Friar Gate line (aka GNR Derbyshire and Staffordshire Extension) from Egginton to Nottingham in sections, this is a big project and may take a few years as I can only do this over busy areas when its quiet and will be a Summer project.

In this episode the journey starts at Friar Gate bridge and ends just past Chester Green.

In this episode we will be flying NNE from Friargate bridge to where the line used to cross the Midland mainline north east of Little Chester, Derby.

This flight was filmed very early on a Sunday morning which is why the roads are pretty much deserted.

This video is part of a collection of Friar Gate line flights covering the entire original route in small parts. If you would like to see the section before this video or the one after this then use these links here to go directly to them :

Information on my drone flying :
● My drone is a Class C0 drone sub-250g type, because its such a lightweight drone (236g), I'm allowed to fly it over residential and commercial property and people (but not crowds) without permission.
● I passed the theory test and have both valid flyer ID and Operator ID's.
● I have drone insurance (£5 million public liability insurance cover).
● I strictly follow all the CAA guidelines on flying my drone.
● I always fly in Cinematic mode (slow speed) as this is safer in urban environments.
● I plan all of my flights in advance of taking off to ensure I know my complete flight path and am aware of any obstacles in the way.
● In order to maintain VLOS (visual line of sight) with my drone I use extremely bright Strobe lights, if there are trees or buildings in my way then I have to land and carry on from a different location this means that I often have to join bits of flights together, I try and line up edits using telemetry to match altitude and position etc. but its not always possible to get good joins in clips so this can mean jump cuts and fades between clips.
● I carry out a risk assessment before each flight and ensure all batteries fully charged, GPS has a good fix etc.
● I always engage with anyone nearby informing them the reason for my flight.

Thanks
Andy
