Bitlis, (Osmanlıca: بدليس / Bidlis Kürtçe Bedlis, Ermenice: Baghaghesh veya Baghesh) Bitlis ilinin merkezi olan şehirdir. Merkez ilçeye bağlı üç bucak vardır. Doğu Anadolu Bölgesi'nde yer alan Bitlis'i, güneyden Siirt, batıdan Muş, kuzeyden Ağrı illeri ve doğudan Van Gölü çevreler. Bitlis, Kaleleri ve İslam eserleriyle önemli bir ildir.
Tarihçiler Bitlis tarihini değişik zamanlardan başlatmaktadırlar. 5000 yıllık, 7000 yıllık tarih gibi. Gerçekte Bitlis tarihi Neolotik Çağ dediğimiz Yenitaş dönemine kadar uzanmaktadır. Bitlis ve yöresinin yazılı tarih öncesi oldukça karanlıktır. En önemli nedenleri yüzeydeki buluntuların az olması ve bugüne kadar gerçekçi bir arkeolojik çalışma yapılmamasıdır. Bitlis ili sınırları içerisinde bulunan Süphan ve Nemrut Dağı dağlarındaki obsidyen (doğal cam yatakları), doğrudan olmasa bile dolaylı olarak bu yöre tarihinin Neolitik dönemine kadar çıktığını göstermektedir. Obsidyen yataklarından elde edilen doğal camın yontucu, kesici, kazıyıcı olarak çevredeki yerleşim yerlerinde kullanıldığı anlaşılmaktadır. Yine yapılan çalışmalar sonucunda o döneme ait ticaret yolu Van Gölü'nün doğusundan güneye (bugün ki Van ili sınırları içerisinde bulunan Kalkolitik – Maden Dönemi – yerleşme alanı olan Tilkitepe), batıda ise Diyarbakır il sınırlarına (Ergani yakınındaki çanak-çömleksiz bir Neolitik yerleşme yeri olan Çayönü) dek uzanmaktadır.

Aygır Gölü - Bitlis | Süphan Dağı Manzarası Eşliğinde Adilcevaz Aygır Aygır Gölü Yolu [K.DERE]
Aygır Gölü, Bitlis ili Adilcevaz ilçesi sınırları içinde yer alan bir volkanik set gölüdür. Türkiye'nin en büyük üçüncü büyüklükteki Süphan Dağı’nın güney tarafındaki çanakta bulunur. Denizden yüksekliği 1940 m'dir. Adilcevaz ilçe merkezine 12 km, Bitlis il merkezine ise 97 km mesafede bulunur. Aygır Gölü isminde Türkiye’de birkaç yer daha bulunur.
Aygır Gölü derinliği 65 metre olup, 3,7 kilometre kare genişliğe sahiptir. Göl suyunun kaynağı yağışlar ve Süphan Dağı’nın zirvesinden gelen Şorlar Dere’dir. Göl suları bazı aylarda tarım alanlarının sulaması ve Aydınlar yerleşiminin su ihtiyacının karşılanması için kullanılır. Aygır Gölü doğa turizmi açısından da önemli bir yere sahiptir. Her yıl yerli ve yabancı birçok ziyaretçi göle gelir.

Nemrut Crater Lake and Paragliding [Bitlis / Turkey]
Mt. Nemrut is near Tatvan, a small town in the eastern Anatolian province of Bitlis. The mountain rises from the southwestern shore of Lake Van, and enters the district of Ahlat to the north.
It is 3050 metres high and its elliptic caldera has a diameter of about 7x8 km. The western part of the caldera contains a large coldwater crater lake about 155 metres deep. There is also a small warm lake whose temperature reaches 60°C, providing evidence of continuing volcanic activity.

Now heading into Southeast Turkey, the guide warned about seriously high temperatures going forward. Could have fooled the group. We thought it had been pretty darned hot throughout Turkey!
A long, 10-hour driving day ahead. Skirting the shores of Lake Van, the drive led through the small town of Bitlis that was once an important stop on the Silk Road. An impregnable castle built for Alexander the Great was visible above but with Kurdish sentiment running high, Oz (guide) didn't want to stop. Bitlis is also known for its many only houses of cut stone but all we could do is try to catch fast glances as the bus drove through town.

Nemrut Crater lake is the largest crater lake in Europe and the second largest in the world. It is located inside the crater area of Mount Nemrut, one of the youngest volcanoes in Eastern Anatolia. main attractions in this area are the hot and cold water crater lakes on top of the mountain. The still waters of the Nemrut crater lake are ideal for swimming and boating. There are thermal baths located in small ponds close to the lake, which attract visitors who regularly come to receive treatment.
