The BEST Thing While Traveling, Kurdistan Turkey // Overland Series Ep. 10
One reason why we travel is to meet people on the road, in Kurdistan, Turkey we were lucky to meet locals and other travelers to listen to their stories.
We are driving from Mt Nemrut through the southeast of Turkey, greenfields, and dry grasslands chase each other as we make our way through Turkish Kurdistan. The high plateau is home to the biggest minority in the country, the Kurds. the Kurds are traditional nomads and live from their herds of sheep, goats, and cows. Most of the kids grow up learning the Kurdish language from their parents, cause the Kurdish language and traditions are banned and get not taught in school. We experienced the Kurdish community as one of the warmest and most welcoming people that we met.
On our way east we went through Diyarbakir, Bingöl, Erzurum, and Kars before we crossed the Turkish Georgian border north of Cildir Gölü. In Diyarbakir, we got invited by Mehmet and his friends and coworkers, for coffee and Baklava. Thank you so much for having us it was a pleasure to meet you guys. Mehmet is a professor at the University of Diyarbakir and a farmer, he and his team are growing wheat, corn, rice, lentils, and cotton. In the afternoon we drove to the region of Bingöl where we stayed in a colony of frogs for two days to edit a video.
On the way towards the border with Georgia, we bumped into Chris and his three daughters Jemanja, Sohalia and Yumi, traveling by bike through Europe and Central Asia towards southeast Asia. We cooked and spend the evening together, sharing stories around the fire.
The next day, we drove to Cildir Gölü where we spend two nights on the small island to finish the video and relax.

Böylece Bingöl uğradığım 37. şehir oldu. tabii ki zaman kısıtlı olduğundan bingölü gezmek nasip olmadı. Lakin bir ara gezi için bingöle de gideceğim inşallah. Aslında böyle bir video çekmek aklımda yoktu. Zaten kameramı da yanıma almamıştım. Lakin cep telefonu zaten HD çekiyordu. Koltukta 22F cam kenarı olunca eşssiz manzarayı görmemek ve bunu paylaşmamak büyük bir kayıptı benim için. Bu yüzden çekemeden duramadım ve bu güzel video çıktı ortaya.

터키 반(Van) 호수의 악다마르섬(Akdamar island) 탐험 영상입니다.
반 시내에서는 약 50분정도 차로 떨어져있는 게바쉬(gevaş)라는 도시의 선착장에서 배가 떠났으며 약 20분정도 배를 타고 섬으로 들어가 구경하고 왔네요.
개인적으로 터키여행중 너무 가보고싶었던 곳이었는데 보고와서 너무 만족스러웠어요!
특히 저 초록빛 호수와 푸르른 하늘, 그리고 아르메니아 성당... 와.....
과연 이게 우리가 알던 터키의 모습인가 하는 생각이 들더군요.

This is a video about visiting Akdamar island in lake Van, Turkey.
The ferry left from the pier in gevaş, which is about 50 minutes away by car from Van city center, and it took 20 minutes to get to the island.
Personally, it was a place I really wanted to visit during my trip to Turkey and it was very meaningful and worth it.
Especially the green lake and the blue sky. and the Armenian church.....
I was so surprised that I didn't feel like it was typical Turkey that we knew!

ABOUT KURDISH HERITAGE
Kurdish Heritage focuses on creating awareness for Kurdistan's rich cultural and historic heritage. Kurdistan is a roughly defined geo-cultural region wherein the Kurdish people form a dominant majority. This region is located in what is known as the Cradle of Civilisation; a region where agriculture was first practiced, temples to Gods were first erected, and organised urban communities were first founded.
The word Kurd traces its origin back to the Gutian Dynasty of Akkad, which makes it one of the oldest known words in the world. Besides Kurds, other nations, such as the Assyrians and Armenians, have a long history in these lands as well.
Kurdistan is not only ethnically diverse, but is also home to a great variety of religions. The Kurds themselves are religiously very diverse; even though most are muslim, there are millions of Kurds who practice other religions. Such as Yezidism, Yarsanism, Alevism, Judaism, Zoroastrianism, and Christendom. The prophet Abraham is believed to have been born in Urfa, a Kurdish city in North-Kurdistan*. Urfa, or Riha, was known as Edessa in ancient times. Göbekli Tepe, the oldest known human-made structure, is located 12 kilometers north-east of Urfa. This archaeological site was discovered by a Kurdish shepherd in the early 1960's. This huge religious complex was built 7,000 years (!) before the Great Pyramid of Giza.
This was just a short, general introduction into what Kurdistan has to offer. Kurdistan is a very unknown region to the world, even though it is where humanity first organised itself. Our aim is to change that, despite the many expected obstacles we will face on our journey.

Rojhilat = East-Kurdistan; the majority-Kurdish populated areas of Iran (North-West Iran).
Başûr = South-Kurdistan; the majority Kurdish-populated areas of Iraq (North-Iraq). This part of Kurdistan has autonomy; the Kurdish-areas are ruled by Kurds.
Rojava = West-Kurdistan; the areas under control of the Kurdish forces in Syria (North-Syria).
