Zim Zambezi Epic, Part 5: Onto Chirundu and the Lower Zambezi River (Overlanding in Zimbabwe)
In Part 1 of our Zim Zambezi Epic, we cover our attempts to get into Zimbabwe and across Beitbridge border. In Part 2, we spend 10 days in quarantine on the shores of Lake Kariba at Maabwe Camp. In Part 3, we get to officially move on to our first Zimparks destination, Chizarira National Park. In Part 4, we attempted the difficult task of getting into Matusadona National Park (and to Tashinga Camp) by road in the rainy season.
Now, in Part 5, we head back up the escarpment out of Matusadona, and then right down again to the border town of Chirundu, for a stay on the lower Zambezi river. We run into a bit of trouble with the law, and only get to our destination late in the evening.
Tiger fishing on the Zambezi, relaxing with the amazing sites of the river just in front of your campsite, a cold Zambezi beer in-hand, and the sounds of nature all around.
Next time on the Zim Zambezi Epic, we head to the famous Mana Pools National Park.

An overlanding adventure drive like no other, in the second episode of this 3 part series, as we head out from Chitake Springs to the Nyamepi campsites, and then onwards to the Mucheni campsites. Spending a total of 6 nights in the Mana Pools National Park, we then travel to Harare and onwards to Masvingo, where I visit the UNESCO world heritage site that is the Great Zimbabwe ruins. Kotwa | A Town On The HIGHWAY | Mudzi, Zimbabwe @jotachfilms
Along the Harare Nyamapanda Highway is a small town known as Kotwa. Kotwa is located in the eastern part of Zimbabwe and is 222km from Harare and about 20km from Nyamapanda Border. It is the capital of Mudzi District and it serves as both an administrative and commercial centre of this district. It started as a small business centre for the surrounding villages such as Dengwa and Meza. Later on, it expanded under the Growth Point Policy introduced in the early 80s soon after independence. It covers an area of 4075 square kilometres. Kotwa lies in the heartland of the Toko-Tonga area, generally considered to be a Shona people. It’s population is made up mainly of the Toko people with an estimated population of 135 378.
Kotwa has a number of lodges and guest houses and of course one 3 star hotel, The Pumpkin Hotel. There is also the Mudzi Resource Centre which offers accommodation, and is a venue for conferences, weddings and other events.
Being a town in the Zambezi Escarpment, it is very hot in summer and suffers from Malaria. It also has an aerodrome, called Kotwa Aerodrome which was mostly used by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to launch attacks against RENAMO dissidents during the Mozambique Civil War.
Kotwa has one hospital, Kotwa District Hospital, which is central government owned and serves the whole of Mudzi District and one clinic owned by the Mudzi Rural District Council. It terms of education, it has Nyamakuyo and Kotwa Government Primary, and Kotwa Government High Schools. Kotwa also has a tertiary institution which goes by the name, Kotwa Vocational Training Centre.

I have never canoed in such a huge, spacious water body like Bally Vaughan Game Park. It was really refreshing to actually manage to paddle with no restrictions from reeds holding back the paddle. The large number of bird species we saw & heard took the canoeing experience to a whole other level. We even saw the Leguaan :). I felt so calm, so relaxed during and after the experience. I genuinely would love to go back again & again & again. Simply The Best Ever... Enjoy!

What a come back from UZ | More Greener!
The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) is the oldest and probably the leading university in Zimbabwe. Located in Mount Pleasant, UZ Zimbabwe once the best university in the whole of Africa has suffered a lot since 2007. From bad infrastructure, sanitation problems in the residence places, lower numbers of student enrollment to fraduelent degree scandals, the university standards had decreased. However, over the last five years the university has been working so hard to restore its name and infrastructure to the international university brand.
In this video we get to vlog and drive around the University of Zimbabwe campus's education, sports and residential facilities. The roads, traffic signs and direction boards have been greatly improved, more trees have been planted, new lecture halls.

Road Trip from Harare to Pa50 Grill
Our journey to Pa Grill 50 begins from Lomagundi, at the Upper East Road school gates of Mount Pleasant High School, we then proceed west to cross Second Street Extension that is the Road that takes you to Bindura town, which is about 84 km away. Lomagundi Road takes you to the Chirundu border post, which is about 347Km away.
From Lomagundi Road we turned south into West End Road where we later branched off into Bishop Gaul Ave but, still heading southward. The road then crosses Princess Road and continues into Samora Machel Avenue. In Samora Machel Avenue we turned towards the destination facing east-south in route to Bulawayo. This is a drive that takes you through the National Sports Stadium and National Heroes Acre.
Past this point, we drove for about 40 km to the tollgate before traveling 10 km to the final destination.
The road was fun to drive on. The traffic was low, unlike most days when one could be caught in the growing traffic congestion
