Alcester is a market town and civil parish of Roman origin at the junction of the River Alne and River Arrow in Warwickshire, England. It is situated approximately 8 miles (13 km) west of Stratford-upon-Avon, and 8 miles south of Redditch, close to the Worcestershire border.
Alcester was founded by the Romans in around AD 47 as a walled fort. The walled colonia named Alauna developed from the military camp. It was sited on Icknield Street (or Ryknild Street), a Roman road that ran the length of Britannia from the north east near Hadrian's Wall to southwest England. The town was also just north of the Fosse Way, another important thoroughfare in Roman Britain.
Alcester was also the site of Alcester Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1138 by Ralph le Boteler. Richard de Tutbury, the last abbot, resigned his office in 1467 and Alcester Abbey was absorbed into the neighbouring Evesham Abbey. By 1515 Alcester Abbey was in ruins as a result of the neglect of various abbots, and later during the Dissolution of the Monasteries Henry VIII it was largely demolished.
Alcester was previously served by Alcester railway station belonging to the Midland Railway (later part of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway), on the Gloucester Loop Line, branching off the Birmingham and Gloucester Railway main line at Ashchurch, passing through Evesham railway station, Alcester and Redditch and rejoining the main line at Barnt Green, near Bromsgrove. The loop was built to address the fact that the main line bypassed most of the towns it might otherwise have served, but it took three separate companies to complete, Alcester being on the Evesham and Redditch Railway prior to absorption by the Midland.
In addition a branch line provided by the Alcester Railway company (later part of the Great Western Railway) ran from Alcester to Bearley, thus giving access to Stratford-upon-Avon. This line, however, was an early casualty, closing in September 1939. The Midland loop was due to close between Ashchurch and Redditch in June 1963 but the poor condition of the track led to all trains between Evesham and Redditch being withdrawn in October 1962 and replaced by a bus service for the final eight months. Redditch to Barnt Green remains open on the electrified Birmingham suburban network. Alcester is served by buses from Redditch, Evesham and Stratford upon Avon.
Alcester is also known for two nearby stately homes. To the north is Coughton Court, the family seat of the Throckmorton baronets as well as a National Trust property. To the south-west is Ragley Hall, the home of the Marquis of Hertford, whose gardens contain a children's adventure playground. Kinwarton, which is just north of Alcester, contains a church of Anglo Saxon origin and a historic dovecote, Kinwarton Dovecote, which is also a National Trust property. Alcester is also a significant town on the 100-mile-long Heart of England Way long-distance walking route.

Hello and welcome. I hope you enjoy this video. It is 6am in the morning, today we are walking around Bradford on Avon. Bradford on Avon is a town in the west of Wiltshire, in south-west of England. It is quiet now. It can get busy later in the day and is popular with tourists. Bradford on Avon is just over 100 miles drive from central London and can be a two to three hour train journey from Waterloo Station, London. Today we started our walk along the Kennet & Avon canal now we are walking around the old Grade 1 listed Tithe Barn. The barn was built around the 1330s and is one of the largest of its kind. Taxes in the form of goods would have been taken from the towns people and stored in the barn. Originally the barn was owned by Shaftesbury Abbey in 1539 the abbey was dissolved and it became a farm. In the 1970s the barns were purchased by Wiltshire Council. The barn is usually open everyday from 10:30am to 4pm and is free to the public. Check times on the English Heritage website if you plan to visit and would like to go inside. As we carry on we walk over the River Avon that runs through the middle of Bradford on Avon. In the 17th and 18th century the river used to power wool mills, and Bradford on Avon prospered. Later the English woollen industry moved north to Yorkshire and the last mill here closed in 1905. Today the old mills have been converted into shops, restaurants or housing and the river, like the canal, is mainly used for leisure. During the day the you may see rowers or paddle boarders up-and-down the river. We eventually leave the river and head into the centre of town, where we meet the road. The main road through Bradford on Avon can get quite busy, a well used route between the town of Trowbridge and city of Bath. First though we wander down some alley-ways and side-streets coming out at the Holy Trinity Church, built around 1150. When we meet the river again look out for the larger old mill buildings along the side of the river. Bradford on Avon has so many interesting old historic buildings you could spend all day soaking up the history. Movies and TV shows that have been filmed here include: Robin of Sherwood (1984), Creation (2009), Wolf Hall (2015), The White Princess (2017), Amazon Prime’s The Spanish Princess (2019) and Netflix’s Cursed (2020). At the end of our walk we can see the Grade 1 listed Town Bridge. The bridge was originally a narrower packhorse bridge and widened in the 17th century. In 1643 during the English Civil War, Royalists seized control of the bridge on their way to battle. There is a small building on the bridge, originally a chapel, later used as a town lockup (prison cell). Bidford-on-Avon is a large village and civil parish in the English county of Warwickshire, very close to the border with Worcestershire. In the 2001 census it had a population of 4,830, increasing to 5,350 at the 2011 census.
== History ==
Ryknield Street, the Roman road, passes through the village, going north towards Alcester. There is also an ancient Anglo-Saxon burial site under the free car park located just behind the Indian restaurant No 72. First discovered in the 1920s, artefacts from more recent excavations are located at Warwick Museum, while material from the first excavations on the site currently resides in the hands of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. A Bronze Age razor was found in excavations at Bidford-on-Avon. Bidford was the birthplace and childhood home of the 20th-century author Barbara Comyns.William Shakespeare is said to have joined a party of Stratford folk which set itself to outdrink a drinking club at Bidford-on-Avon, and as a result of his labours in that regard to have fallen asleep under the crab tree of which a descendant is still called Shakespeares tree. When morning dawned his friends wished to renew the encounter but he wisely said No I have drunk with “Piping Pebworth, Dancing Marston, Haunted Hillboro’, Hungry Grafton, Dodging Exhall, Papist Wixford, Beggarly Broom and Drunken Bidford” and so, presumably, I will drink no more. The story is said to date from the 17th century but of its truth or of any connection of the story or the verse to Shakespeare there is no evidence. The Falcon Inn was a favourite tavern in his day.

Bidford-on-Avon village is, as its name suggests, situated on the River Avon, some 7 miles (11 km) downstream of Stratford-upon-Avon and about the same distance upstream of Evesham. The village grew up around an ancient ford (Byda's Ford), now replaced by a narrow stone bridge, on the Ryknild Street Roman road, now a minor country road to Honeybourne, four miles (six kilometres) sout...

Welford-on-Avon is a picturesque village set in the heart of South Warwickshire. It lies on the Avon River about four miles west of Stratford-upon-Avon, four miles south of Alcester and four miles east of Bidford-on-Avon.
The centre of the village is designated as a conservation area and contains quite a number of attractive thatched houses including what is believed to be the original “chocolate box cottage” in Boat Lane, reputedly the most photographed street in Warwickshire.

Warwick is steeped in history and is home to one of Englands best loved tourist attractions, Warwick Castle, the finest medieval castle in England.
The town centre is small, but packed with old buildings such as St Mary's Church, and East Gate and West Gate.
There are some excellent bars and restaurants, plenty of boutiques and antique shops and two museums.
Warwick Racecourse enjoys a full calendar throughout the year offering a great day out at the races.

Evesham is a market town and parish in the Wychavon district of Worcestershire, in the West Midlands region of England. It is located roughly equidistant between Worcester, Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon. It lies within the Vale of Evesham, an area comprising the flood plain of the River Avon, which has been renowned for market gardening. The town centre, situated within a meander of the river, is subjected regularly to flooding. The 2007 floods were the most severe in recorded history.
The town was founded around an 8th-century abbey, one of the largest in Europe, which was destroyed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, with only Abbot Lichfield's Bell Tower remaining. During the 13th century, one of the two main battles of England's Second Barons' War took place near the town, marking the victory of Prince Edward, who later became King Edward I; this was the Battle of Evesham.

Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town in south Warwickshire, England in the United Kingdom. It lies on the River Avon some 38 kilometres (24 miles), south of Birmingham and 14 km (9 miles) south-west of the county town, Warwick. In 2001, the town's population was 23,676.
The town is a popular tourist destination owing to its status as birthplace and deathbed of the playwright and poet William Shakespeare, receiving about three million visitors a year from all over the world.
