The next leg of my Central Asia travel takes me to Uzbekistan, a land full of incredible Islamic architecture and one of the most significant countries of the Silk Road.
Having arrived via land border crossing from Kazakhstan, I had a short stay here in Tashkent, before continuing to the famous cities of Samarkand and Bukhara.
In this video, I will do a self-guided exploration of Tashkent. I spent the day admiring the beautifully unique architecture of the various metro stations throughout the city, as well as visiting some landmarks and getting a first glimpse into the Uzbek cuisine.

Sultan Saodat Ensemble, Termez (12-15 centuries)
The cult-memorial complex of Sultan Saodat, Termez.
Sultan Saodat Ensemble (12-15th centuries) – A memorial complex of mausoleums and mosques built over a long period of time, Sultan Saodat holds the graves of the great Sayyid dynasty of Termez.
The most ancient part was a three-part frontal opening the southwest part of the complex to the courtyard side. Here are located two large one- chambered, square-domed mausoleums.
The magnificent ensemble was distinguished for its ancient group of mausoleums, homogenous in composition and decor though built in different style.

Citadel Ayaz Kala - Usbekistan 4K Travel Channel
We have flown from Tashkent to Khiva and already explored the city for two days, while our driver Shamil has driven the 1000 km long way by car. This morning, he is ready again to drive us to Bukhara. One last look at the city walls, then we drive towards Urgench, which we leave to our left. After crossing the Amu Darya river we continue to the Ayaz Kala fortress.
The Ayaz Kala fortress lies on the right shore of the Amu Darya, approximately 40 km northeastern of the city of Beruniy, which was called Kath in ancient times. Actually, these are three fortresses, with the largest on the top of a hill. Originally they were surrounded by mighty clay walls. Today, the fortresses are given over to decay. Erosion by the weather and tourists cause decay of walls. The topmost fortress dates from the 4th century BC.
It was a so-called refuge with a large, unspoiled courtyard and served to protect against marauding nomads. In case of danger, the population together with its animals retracted into the fortress. For about 1300 years, the fortresses are uninhabited. At that time, the surrounding landscape was still wetland and green pastureland. With the drying up of the Aral Sea, the surrounding land turned into desert.
Sirojiddin from Registon Travel wants to go high on this day. Although the desert may be very dry here, the sparse plants are still enough to feed small herds of camels.
Little lizards run between the dry bushes around again and again.
In the plain in front of it are the remains of a third fortress, of which hardly anything is visible anymore.

Während wir von Taschkent nach Xiva geflogen sind und bereits zwei Tage die Stadt erkundet haben, ist unser Fahrer Shamil die 1000 km lange Strecke mit dem Auto gefahren. So steht er heute morgen wieder bereit um uns nach Bukhara zu fahren.
Ein letzter Blick auf die Stadtmauern, dann fahren wir Richtung Urganch, das wir aber links liegen lassen. Nach der Überquerung des Amudarja geht es weiter zur Festung Ayaz Kala.
Die Festung Ayaz Kala liegt am rechten Ufer des Amudarja, ungefähr 40 km nordöstlich der Stadt Beruniy, das in antiken Zeiten Kath hieß. Eigentlich sind es drei Festungen, wobei die Größte auf der Spitze eine Hügels liegt. Ursprünglich mächtige Lehmmauern umspannen diesen. Heute ist die Festung dem Verfall preisgegeben. Erosion durch das Wetter und Touristen machen dem Gemäuer zu schaffen. Die oberste Festung stammt aus dem 4. Jahrhundert vor Chr.
Es war eine sogenannte Fluchtburg mit großem unverbautem Innenhof und diente dem Schutz vor marodierenden Nomaden. Bei Gefahr konnte sich die Bevölkerung mitsamt ihren Tieren in die Festung zurückziehen. Seit etwa 1300 Jahren sind die Festungen unbewohnt. In jener Zeit war die umgebende Landschaft noch Sumpfgebiet und grünes Weideland. Mit dem Austrocknen des Aralsees verwandelte sich das umgebende Land in Wüste.

Die Wüste mag hier zwar sehr trocken sein, dennoch reichen die spärlichen Pflanzen um vereinzelt kleine Kamelherden zu ernähren.
Zwischen den trockenen Sträuchern laufen immer wieder kleine Eidechsen umher.
Auf einem kleinen vorgelagerten Hügel liegt eine weitere kleinere Festung. Sie stammt aus dem 7. Jahrhundert n. Chr. In der Ebene davor befinden sich die Reste einer dritten Festung, von der aber kaum noch etwas zu sehen ist.
Auf halber Höhe wurde ein kleines Jurtendorf errichtet, in dem man auch übernachten kann.
