Pergamon was a rich and powerful city in ancient Greece in the region of Mysia. It is located 26 kilometers from the modern coastline of the Aegean Sea on a promontory on the north side of the river Caicus and northwest of the modern city of Bergama, Turkey.
The Library of Pergamum in Pergamom, Turkey, was one of the most important libraries in the ancient world.
About Bergamon:
The city of Bergamon is famous for it carpets and the small Archaeological Museum of Pergamum, where you can see some of the findings from the excavations. It is also a great place to eat a cheap turkish lunch

Hello, and welcome to the seventh installment of our biggest series yet, Near From Home's Turkish Coastal Road Trip. In this video, we continue the series by visiting the ancient sites in the Turkish town of Bergama. We explore the steep, mountaintop ruins of Pergamon and are amazing by antiquities' steepest Amphitheater, the Acropolis, and the remains of the Great Pergamon alter, or the Bible's Seat of Satan. Next we visit the Red Hall Basicilca, wich features an impressive idol to Egyption gods, and some gruesome Christian history. We wrap the day in Bergama up with a visit to the Asclepieion, a temple and school for history's most famous physicians.

Antik Yunan dünyasında hala ayakta kalan en büyük Roma yapılarından biridir. Tapınağın Mısır tanrılarına, özellikle de İsis, Serapis ve muhtemelen Osiris, Harpokrates ve diğer alt tanrıların ibadetinde kullanılmış olduğu sanılmaktadır. We have been to Bergama, which is a populous district, as well as the center city of the same district, in İzmir Province in western Turkey.
The Red Basilica, also called variously the Red Hall and Red Courtyard, is a monumental ruined temple in the ancient city of Pergamon.
The temple was built by the Roman Empire, probably in the time of Hadrian and possibly on his orders. It is one of the largest Roman structures still surviving in the ancient Greek world.
Bergama is also renowned for its high quality carpets. There are approximately eighty villages that still weave Bergama carpets. The history of carpet weaving in Bergama dates back to the 11th century - when Turkish migration started to the area. Bergama carpets have almost always been woven with wool - an attestation to the pastoral life style of the Yörük clans populating the area at the time.

Pergamum was under the control of the Lydian King Kroisos in 560BC. Then came under the rule of Alexander the Great in 334BC. Pergamum is off the tourist path, when we visited the Ruins our group of four were the only people there. There are a lot of Roman ruins to see. The Temple of Trajan, the Roman amphitheater, Galen's clinic, and much more. In the nearby city of Bergama the Roman Sanctuary The Red Basilica and the Bergama Museum is well worth seeing.

The Red Basilica (Turkish: Kızıl Avlu), also called variously the Red Hall and Red Courtyard, is a monumental ruined temple in the ancient city of Pergamon, now Bergama, in western Turkey. The temple was built during the Roman Empire, probably in the time of Hadrian and possibly on his orders. It is one of the largest Roman structures still surviving in the ancient Greek world. The temple is thought to have been used for the worship of Egyptian gods – specifically Isis and/or Serapis, and possibly also Osiris, Harpocrates and other lesser gods, who may have been worshipped in a pair of drum-shaped rotundas, both of which are virtually intact, alongside the main temple. Although the building itself is of an immense size, it was only one part of a much larger sacred complex, surrounded by high walls, that dwarfed even the colossal Temple of Jupiter in Baalbek. The entire complex was built directly over the River Selinus in a remarkable feat of engineering that involved the construction of an immense bridge 196 metres (643 ft) wide to channel the river through two channels under the temple. The Pergamon Bridge still stands today, supporting modern buildings and even vehicle traffic. A series of tunnels and chambers lies under the main temple, connecting it with the side rotundas and giving private access to different areas of the complex. Various drains, water channels and basins are located in, around and under the main temple and may have been used for symbolic reenactments of the flooding of the Nile. The temple was converted by the Byzantines into a Christian church dedicated to St John but was subsequently destroyed. Today the ruins of the main temple and one of the side rotundas can be visited, while the other side rotunda is still in use as a small mosque.
