13 Places in Yerevan, Armenia You Should Visit!
By [ Gregori Saghyan

1. Republic Square and National Gallery and Armenia History Museum

Here in Armenia, Republic Square is considered to be one of 10 most beautiful squares of the world. Well, unfortunately, I couldn't find the source but I totally agree with the statement. Republic Square is really thrilling. It was constructed from 1924 to 1929. Its architect is a genial Armenian architect - A. Tamanyan who also designed Yerevan in general. The square is surrounded by The National Gallery and The History Museum, The Ministry of Territorial Administration of Armenia, The Government House, The Central Post-Office of Armenia,

2. Matenadaran

One can think that Matenadaran - The Ancient Manuscripts Museum could be a boring place. However, it is just the first and false impression. I am only 22 years old and I can tell that Matenadaran was awesome. Every single book, every single page of the books covers a very interesting story. I will bring just one example. The heaviest book in Matenadaran was around 34 kg. During Armenian Genocide it was carried out from Turkey by two sisters. They cut the book into 2 pieces - 17 kg each and tied to their bodies. One of them died during their escape from Turkey and her piece was lost.

3. Opera House

Opera House is the other great building by the genial A. Tamanyan. Located in the heart of Yerevan, it is indeed a piece of art from outside and of course it is magnificent inside. It would be enough to say that it is one of few Opera Theatres in the world that were able to perform Aida of Giuseppe Verdi but one should also know that Opera House has held concerts of such artists as Charles Aznavour,

4. Tsitsernakaberd and Genocide Museum

Tsitsernakaberd is the place where Armenians gather to remember the victims of the Armenian Genocide. Every April 24 people from Yerevan, other regions of Armenia and even a lot of Diaspora representatives walk to the eternal fire and put flowers in memory of the millions of people died during the tragedy.

5. Arin Berd or Erebuni Fortress

This is where Yerevan and modern Armenia begin. Being founded in 8th century BC and surviving to our times it is one of the oldest fortresses in the world. And it makes Yerevan one of the oldest cities of the world. Arin Berd in translation from Armenian means Fortress of Blood though it's not so scary. Indeed, this fortress is of a great historical value. So if you are interested in archeology or history, this is the place that you cannot miss!

6. Cascade and Cafesjian Museum

Cascade is my personal favorite. I go there with my friends to drink a cup of coffee and with my girlfriend to walk there. Cascade is just a masterpiece in term of architecture. From the top of cascade you can see the most beautiful panorama of Yerevan and Ararat if you are lucky enough because mostly Ararat is covered with clouds and is invisible.

7. Ararat Brandy Factory

Ararat is a symbol of Armenia but so is Ararat Brandy Factory. Any Brandy lover should know that after France the best Brandy in the world is produced in Armenia, but some even prefer Armenian Brandy to French. Ararat Brandy Factory is an old school top quality brandy maker - indeed the best one in Armenia.

8. Northern Avenue

Constructed in 2007 Northern Avenue became another beloved place for Yerevan walkers. Northern Avenue was included in Tamanyan's Yerevan city plan but he wasn't able to construct it.
It connects the 2 Yerevan Famous Squares - The Republic Square and the Freedom Square (where Opera House is located).

9. Museum of Parajyanov

Until now there are a lot of cinemaddicts that still remember the great Armenian movie director Parajyanov as he is one of the world-renowned geniuses in that sphere... Some greatest directors such as Fellini, Tarkovsky, Vigo, Antonioni, Godard and many others knew and respected Parajyanov as mastermind of his genre.

10. Museum of Saryan

Well, everybody who explores the world of art, the world of drawings should know Martiros Saryan as he is indeed a great painter. He is famous all over the world because of his ability to show the power of the colors. His paintings are very colorful and very beautiful... It is too hard to transfer that beauty by words.

LAKE SEVAN | The Jewel of Armenia (Don't Miss This Amazing Place!)

If you come to Armenia YOU HAVE TO go to Lake Sevan! This is definitely one of the most beautiful places in the country and is the main body of water since Armenia is a landlocked country. It is only an hour drive from Yerevan so it is easy to do a day trip to the area or you can stay overnight at a hotel on the lake or a B&B in Sevan City. I would highly recommend trying some of the local seafood, chatting with the very friendly locals and just take in the beautiful mountain lake view. Hope you enjoy the video! xx

Travel Medical Insurance I use:
Get 5% OFF Hey Mondo:

SafetyWing (best for younger travelers + digital nomads):

*I use both of these companies depending on the destination and requirements of entry. If you are going to be abroad for a long time and/or don't need as much coverage, I would recommend SafetyWing. BUT you cannot purchase SafetyWing WHILE in Canada or USA. You can only purchase once already abroad. Hey Mondo is more expensive but offers a higher level of coverage including plans that have trip cancellation/interruption insurance. Hey Mondo would be the better insurance to use if you need travel medical insurance when applying for a visa. Both companies cover covid. I am an affiliate for both companies, but I pay for my own policies.*

Armenia Journey Guide: Haghpat & Sanahin Monasteries

Lori is rich in religious architectural monuments and monastic complexes, which perfectly harmonize with the natural environment where they were built, be it in the mountains, forests, settlements, or rocks. The construction traditions of the Armenian Highland have a history of thousands of years. The main building materials used were stone (basalt, felsic, tuff), clay, and unbaked brick. The churches and monastic complexes of medieval Armenia are in harmony with the natural environment where they were built, whether in the mountains, forests, settlements, or on the rocks.

Sanahin
Sanahin is an ancient settlement. This is evidenced by the findings of the tombs, according to which it was a significant settlement as far back as 4000 years ago.

Haghpat
Haghpat Monastery is a special monument of medieval Armenian architecture, with its composition, interweaving of secular and religious thought in harmony with the surroundings. The monastery is located near Haghpat village. It was founded in the 10th century by King Ashot III and his wife Khosrovanuysh for their son's well-being.

Exploring the beauty of Haghartsin Monastery in the Tavush Province of Armenia | 4K resolution

“The playing eagle” - this is what the name Haghartsin means. According to the legend, this religious complex, located near the town of Dilijan in Tavush province, was built on a spot where an eagle used to soar from day to night, and that is why the complex got its name.

The construction of the monastery took place between the 10th and 13th centuries, mostly under the patronage of the most renowned Armenian royal dynasty - the Bagratouni. The architects that supervised the construction of the Haghartsin monastery are Khachatour of Taron - an Armenian poet, musician, and religious figure who has authored a large number of sharakans (Armenian religious songs), and later - Minas the Architect.

As a result, they created a cultural and religious treasure that withstood many environmental and historical challenges.

Most typical Armenian trip

This trip is most typical Armenian because it included nature, culture and history in one place, literally in one place: you find cultural heritage in he form of medieval monasteries and/or khachkars (cross-stones) in the middle of the foresty mountains with the rocks behind, medieval fortresses with the excavation artifacts around, with the view to the city and the surrounding mountains.
We stayed overnight in Tavush village where we made barbeque, had home-made spirits and fun, and the lovely hosts surprised us with their singing. Check out Real Tavush B&B.
The second day hike was even more relaxing and magical due to the slightly foggy atmosphere, animals and the blossoms of the spring.

Lori Fortress was founded in the early 11th century. The place had ten thousand inhabitants and was quite lively during the Middle Ages being located at the crossroads of trade routes. After numerous attacks and destructions in the 13th century, Lori lost strategic importance. Fortress residents founded a village called Lori Berd in the 1920s and 1930s. Two baths, two pools with fountains, and other unique architectural monuments were discovered here as a result of excavations carried out here since 1966. Lori Fortress has been visited by many tourists and Armenian residents as an interesting landmark. Besides the historical value, this place is also remarkable for its beautiful natural scenery.
