Tajikistan-Khujand to Tashkent-Border Crossing Part 33

Welcome to my travelchannel. ☛☛☞☛
On my channel you can find more than 1000 films of almost 80 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Crossing from Khujand (Tajikistan) to Tashkent to Uzbekistan via Oybek:
Generally straightforward crossing between Khujand and Tashkent. Open 24/7.
Uzbekistan - Tajikistan: A direct bus runs between Tashkent and Khudjand (5h, 50 000 sum). It no longer starts at the bus station of Sobir Rahimov near the subway with the same name, instead it now departs from the bus station near the Olmazar metro. After buying the ticket, this might be a good time to change your remaining money back into usd. At the border the rate is lower, and in Tajikistan you will get nothing for your som. No need to buy the ticket in advance it seems as the bus is never full.
Alternatively, go to Kuyluk (Kuluk, Kulyuk, Koylok, Qo’lok) Bazaar in Tashkent. Bus 12 runs from the train station to Koylok bazaar. From the bazaar to Oybek you have two choices: You can take a taxi (including shared taxis – 15000 sum for a seat, 60000 sum for the car) or a bus going to Bekobod for 5500 sum (you get off at Oybek, aka Chanak).
A marshrutka ride to the border takes 2 hours, 1,5 hr by taxi. Once across the border, you can take a shared taxi to Buston (5 somoni), then a minibus to Khujand (7 somoni).
Tajikistan - Uzbekistan: The direct bus to Tashkent leaves from the bus station ~5km north of the centre at 8am every day (5hr, 50 somoni).
The old way: from Khujand, local minibus 33 goes directly to the bus station from where taxis and minibuses depart to Buston. Minibus is 7 Somoni, another 4 somoni for a shared taxi from the Buston bus station to the Oybek border. Taxis from Khujand to the border start from 80 somoni for the car.
On the Uzbek side of the Oybek border taxi drivers are waiting (10$/car). A bit further away on the main road, marshrutkas pass by occasionally.
There are no money changers outside the border post on the Tajik side. However, there is a ‘Duty Free’ hut inside the Tajik border post where you can apparently change money. There are money changers on the Uzbek side.

Jago 257| Backpacking to Khujand, Tajikistan, from Tashkent, Uzbekistan

On the 124th day I finally went to Khujand, Tajikistan, after a week of sightseeing around four embassies in Tashkent to look for a visa.

The distance from Tashkent to Khujand is only 160 kilometers, but there are not always direct buses for border crossing. Therefore I tried to make it cheap, starting from Quyluq Bazar in the southern part of Tashkent. It turned out I had to go further south, to Food City where I finally found a bus to Bekobod where I could get off at Oybek, the border town with Tajikistan (only 14,000 Som/$1.2).

The Uzbek immigration process in Oybek was relatively smooth. I was only asked for proof of hotel registration while in Uzbekistan. The whole process including queuing only took 30 minutes. Then I arrived at Tajikistan immigration which took 3 hours because the internet connection was down and I had to wait for a technician to repair it. It is said that Tajikistan is the least developed former Soviet Union countries.

From the border it is still far from the nearest city. I took a shared-taxi for 10 Somoni ($1) to Buston, where there is an ATM, SIM Card shop, and a mashrutka (van) to Khujand for 10 Somoni. Actually, you can also get a direct shared taxi from the border to Khujand for 40 Somoni. However, I was looking for the cheapest route.

I traveled 1.5 hours through the desert with a backdrop of rocky mountains until I arrived at the mashrutka terminal in Khujand. I changed to local mashrutka to Panjshanbe Bazar, which is a registan (sandy square) that still functions as a traditional market to this day.

The market is very lively and I could feel the nuances of Tajikistan culture in this market. The location is also right next to the Khujand Jami Mosque and the Tomb of Sheik Muslihiddin, the ruler of Khujand from the 12th century.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore Khujand, which was founded 2400 years ago under the name Alexandria Eschate, which is the furthest city founded by Alexander the Great. This city was the outermost point of his empire and I want to see more of how this city looks like now.

The Fergana valley (Uzbekistan)

(EN) The Fergana Valley or Farghana Valley is a region in Central Asia spreading across eastern Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. Divided across three subdivisions of the former Soviet Union, the valley is ethnically diverse, and in the early 21st century was the scene of ethnic conflict. A large triangular valley in what is an often dry part of Central Asia, the Fergana owes its fertility to two rivers, the Naryn and the Kara Darya, which run from the east, joining near Namangan, forming the Syr Darya river. The valley's history stretches back over 2300 years, when its population was conquered by Greco-Bactrian invaders from the west. Chinese chroniclers date its towns to more than 2100 years ago, as a path between Greek, Chinese, Bactrian and Parthian civilizations. In the path of the Northern Silk Road, the area was converted by Muslim invaders from the west, and was home to Babur, famous conqueror and founder of the Mughal Empire in India, tying the region to modern Afghanistan and South Asia. The Russian Empire conquered the valley at the end of the 19th century, and it became part of the Soviet Union from the beginning of the 20th. Its three soviet regional states gained independence in 1991. The area remains Muslim, populated by ethnically Uzbek, Tajiks, and Kyrgyz, often intermixed and not matching modern borders. As well there historically have been substantial Russian, Kashgarians, Kipchaks, Bukharan Jews and Romani minorities. Mass cotton cultivation, introduced by the Soviets, remains central to the economy, along with a wide range of grains, fruits and vegetables. There is a long history of stock breeding, leatherwork, and a growing mining sector, including deposits of coal, iron, sulfur, gypsum, rock-salt, lacustrine salt, naphtha, and some small known oil reserves.
