Bayburt, Doğu Karadeniz'de bulunan ve Çoruh Nehri'ne yaslanan Türkiye'nin bir şehridir.
Yerleşim tarih boyunca çeşitli yönetimlerin egemenliğinde olmasından ya da birçok halkın yaşamasından kaynaklı olarak çeşitli adlandırmalar almıştır. Bizanslılar dönemindeki kaynaklarda Payper, Paypert ve Babert olarak yerleşimden bahsedilmiştir. Arap kaynaklarında Bâbirt (بابرت) adıyla görülen Ortaçağ dönemi Ermeni kayıtlarında Payberd(Բաբերդ), 1291 yılında II. Mesud adına basılan sikkede Baypırt, Akkoyunlularla ilgili yakın zamanlı yayınlarda Pâpîrt (پاپيرت), yerleşimi gören İtalyan seyyah Marco Polo’nun kitabında Paipurth ve Osmanlılarda Bayburd (بايبورد) şeklinde yerleşim adlandırılmıştır. Berd, Ermenice kale anlamına gelmekle birlikte yerleşimin tam etimolojik anlamı bilinmemektedir. Evliya Çelebi eseri olan seyahatnamesinde tarihi kronolojiyle çok uymayacak şekilde, Akkoyunlu beylerinin Danişmetlilerle birlikte tarihi Horasan bölgesindeki Mahan diyarından Anadolu’da Bayburt dolaylarına geldiklerinde hazine ve maden bularak zenginleştikleri ve eski Türkçe’de zengin anlamına gelen “bay” oldukları, bunun sonucunda da yerleşime Bay-yurd adını verdiklerini belirtmiştir.
1927’ye kadar Erzurum’a bağlı olan Bayburt, bu tarihte Gümüşhane’ye bağlı bir ilçe oldu. 21.06.1989 tarihinde Bayburt ilinin kurulmasıyla da ilin merkez ilçesi oldu.
Bayburt yüzölçümü ve nüfusu itibarıyla Türkiye'nin en küçük illerinden biridir. Yüzölçümü bakımından 81 il içerisinde 74. sıradadır.

Highway To Hell: Bayburt D915 Road in Turkey has been Named The World's Most Dangerous Road
The Bayburt D915 Road is 66 miles long with 29 hairpin bends and no railings to prevent cars plunging over edges. Parts of the petrifying road are routinely closed off to the public in wintertime due to snow blizzards and ice. According to dangerousroads.org, the twisting, high-up route beats the infamous Death Road in Bolivia for riskiness. The most dangerous road in the world - a true highway to hell that has taken a toll of numerous lives in recent years - is in Turkey. A website - which searches for the world's most dangerous routes - chose the D915 Bayburt Road as their number one. The winding driving route even beat out the infamous 'Death Road' in Bolivia for riskiness. The Bayburt D915 Road is 66 miles long with 29 hairpin bends. Located in the foothills of the 6,000-foot-high Soganli Mountain, it is described as a difficult route where 'you cannot turn at some of the bends in a single manoeuvre; this road was built by Russian soldiers in 1916'. There are no railings at the road's edge to prevent vehicles from plunging to their doom in an accident. Parts of the road are routinely closed in wintertime due to snow blizzards and ice. While the Death Road in Bolivia is mostly used by tourists rubbernecking for splendid views, the Bayburt highway is a working road used by locals driving every form of transport - from lorries to motorbikes. Website dangerousroads.org, who conduced the research, said: 'Words and pictures are not enough to tell how dangerous this road is.' After the Turkish route, India's Keylong-Kishtwar Road was found to be the next most dangerous. Vehicles are constantly twisted along this high mountain trail, which is 144 miles long. It’s a mind numbing vertical drop of hundreds of feet so you might want to give it a miss on a windy day. New Zealand's La piste de l'Amitie took third place, with its sharply winding bends and precipitous ascent.

Bayburt - Trabzon sınırında yer alan, dangerousroads.org tarafından 2016 yılında 'Dünyanın En Tehlikeli Yolu' seçilen Derebaşı virajlarında adrenalin dolu bir yolculuğa hazır olun!
1915'de Rus askerleri tarafından yapıldığı ve o dönem 'Ölüm Yolu' olarak adlandırıldığı bilinen virajlar tek seferde dönülemiyor. Araçla yolculuk etmenin cesaret istediği 13 keskin virajlı D-915 yolunu keşfetmek için bir gece araç üstü çadırımda kamp yapıyorum.
Geçmiş yıllarda bu yolda bir çok kişi vefat etmiş. 2019 yılında çekim yaptığı sırada uçurumdan yuvarlanarak vefat eden haber muhabirini bulmak için arama kurtarma çalışmaları sırasında iki J.A.K görevlisi şehit olmuştur.

From Derebasi Bends (D915) to Kars through Zirve Pass at 2.800m off road - Turkey day 7 [S1-Ep.61]
In this episode I'm leaving Bayburt passing through the Demirkapi Creek and an amazing mountain range. It's gonna be a very long day, because 400km are waiting for me and the first 50km are on a quite tough terrain.
But the view is something unbelievable, and I almost cried (well, actually I did it, but... ???? ).
Once passed the Zirve pass at 2.800m the landscape start changing dramatically, till reaching the best representation of Mars I could imagine.
