11. Santiago de Compostela. Hotel Pazo de Altamira is a lovely, modern hotel within a gorgeous old Galician stone building. And it’s right opposite the fabulous market!
10. Jerez de la Frontera. Definitely try and stay at the famous Hotel Casa Grande - a big old mansion with a gorgeous rooftop terrace for drinks -
9. Vera Valley. I would suggest staying in the village Valverde de la Vera and my pick is the cosy and rustic La Picota:
8. Cadaqués. I love Tramantua Hotel, a white-washed gem run by a husband and wife team… service is fantastic, and it’s right in the old city, plus near the beach:
7. Cáceres. We stayed at the budget but good Hotel Iberia Plaza Mayor with views of the square): If you want to stay IN the old city though, the Parador here is a 14th century palace - the full Caceres medieval dream!
6. Oviedo. Prices in Northern Spain are often cheaper, so you can happily get a great hotel here without spending a lot. Check out the excellent Barceló Oviedo Cervantes:
5. Zahara de los Atunes. Either go with Hotel Avenida Playa (simple, clean, and right off the beach - or the slightly more chic Hotel Doña Lola -
4. Las Alpujarras. Casa Rural la Fragua is a gorgeous little tucked away whitewashed apartment in Capileira (either stay here or in Pampaneira). This place is perfect for exploring the villages around the area.
3. El Rocío. I love Hotel La Malvasía with its old-world luxury, the fact it’s only a 5-minutes walk from the famous Santa María del Rocío church and they also have a terrace which is perfect for sunsets.

Badajoz (UK: /ˈbædəhɒz/, US: /ˌbɑːdɑːˈhoʊs, -ˈhoʊθ, -ˈhɔːð, ˌbɑːdəˈhoʊz/,[2][3][4] Spanish: [baðaˈxoθ]; formerly written Badajos in English) is the capital of the Province of Badajoz in the autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain. It is situated close to the Portuguese border, on the left bank of the River Guadiana. The population in 2011 was 151,565.
Originally a settlement by groups such as the Romans and the Visigoths, its previous name was Civitas Pacensis. Badajoz was conquered by the Moors in the 8th century and became a Moorish kingdom, the Taifa of Badajoz. After the Reconquista, the area was disputed between Spain and Portugal for several centuries with alternating control resulting in several wars including the Spanish War of Succession (1705), the Peninsular War (1808–1811), the Storming of Badajoz (1812), and the Spanish Civil War (1936). Spanish history is largely reflected in the town.
Badajoz is the see of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz. Prior to the merger of the Diocese of Mérida and the Diocese of Badajoz, Badajoz was the see of the Diocese of Badajoz from the bishopric's inception in 1255. The city has a degree of eminence, crowned as it is by the ruins of a Moorish castle and overlooking the Guadiana river, which flows between the castle hill and the powerfully armed fort of San Cristobal. The architecture of Badajoz is indicative of its tempestuous history; even the Badajoz Cathedral, built-in 1238, resembles a fortress, with its massive walls. Badajoz is home to the CD Badajoz and AD Cerro de Reyes football clubs and the AB Pacense basketball club. It is served by Badajoz Railway Station and Badajoz Airport.
Ancient times
Archaeological finds unearthed in the Badajoz area have been dated to the Bronze Age. Megalithic tombs are dated as far back as 4000 BC, while many of the steles found are from the Late Bronze Age.[6] Other finds include weapons such as axes and swords, everyday items of pottery and utensils, and various items of jewelry such as bracelets. Archaeological excavations have revealed remnants from the Lower Paleolithic period. Artifacts have also been found at the Roman town of Colonia Civitas Pacensis in the Badajoz area, although a significant number of larger artifacts were found in Mérida.
With the invasion of the Romans, which started in 218 BC during the Second Punic War, Badajoz and Extremadura became part of the administrative district called Hispania Ulterior (Further Spain), which was later divided by Emperor Augustus into Hispania Ulterior Baetica and Hispania Ulterior Lusitania; Badajoz became part of Lusitania. Though the settlement is not mentioned in Roman history, Roman villas such as the La Cocosa Villa have been discovered in the area, while Visigothic constructions have also been found in the vicinity.
Badajoz attained importance during the reign of Moorish rulers such as the Umayyad caliphs of Córdoba, and the Almoravids and Almohads of North Africa. From the 8th century, the Umayyad dynasty controlled the region until the early 11th century. The official foundation of Badajoz was laid by the Muladi nobleman Ibn Marwan, around 875, after he had been expelled from Mérida. Under Ibn Marwan, the city was the seat of an effective autonomous rebel state which was quenched only in the 10th century. In 1021 (or possibly 1031 ), it became the capital of a small Muslim kingdom, the Taifa of Badajoz; with some 25,000 inhabitants. Badajoz was known as Baṭalyaws (Arabic: بَطَلْيَوْس) during Muslim rule. The invasion of Badajoz by Christian rulers in 1086 under Alfonso VI of León, overturned the rule of the Moors. In addition to an invasion by the Almoravids of Morocco in 1067, Badajoz was later invaded by the Almohads in 1147.

About Badajoz: Badajoz is a city in southwest Spain. Its known for its Moorish historic quarter with the fortresslike Cathedral of San Juan Bautista. Overlooking the city, the Alcazaba of Badajoz is a Moorish citadel with fortified walls and verdant gardens. It also encompasses the Provincial Archaeological Museum and the 12th-century Espantaperros Tower. Castelar Park features palm trees and statues of local cultural figures. // Badajoz is the capital of the Province of Badajoz in the autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain. It is situated close to the Portuguese border, on the left bank of the river Guadiana. The population in 2011 was 151,565. Originally a settlement by groups such as the Romans and the Visigoths, its previous name was Civitas Pacensis. Badajoz was conquered by the Moors in the 8th century, and became a Moorish kingdom, the Taifa of Badajoz. After the reconquista, the area was disputed between Spain and Portugal for several centuries with alternating control resulting in several wars including the Spanish War of Succession (1705), the Peninsular War (1808–1811), the Storming of Badajoz (1812), and the Spanish Civil War (1936). Spanish history is largely reflected in the town. Badajoz is the see of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mérida-Badajoz. Prior to the merger of the Diocese of Mérida and the Diocese of Badajoz, Badajoz was the see of the Diocese of Badajoz from the bishoprics inception in 1255. BADAJOZ é uma cidade e município raiano de Espanha. Faz parte da comunidade autónoma da Estremadura. Além de ser a maior cidade da Estremadura, é também o principal centro económico da região. Situa-se a um par de quilómetros da fronteira com a cidade portuguesa de Elvas, à beira do rio Guadiana, um dos rios mais importantes da Península Ibérica, que atravessa a cidade de leste para oeste, virando em seguida para sul. A Porta de Palmas (0:10) é uma porta monumental da muralha que rodeava Badajoz. É um dos monumentos mais representativos da cidade. A parte mais antiga da cidade é chamada casco antigo ou bairro histórico. Na década de 2000, a Praça Alta (Plaza Alta) (1:44) e a Praça de Espanha (2:31), dois dos locais mais emblemáticos de Badajoz, foram restauradas em larga escala. A última é onde se encontra o palácio municipal (ayuntamiento) (2:43) e a catedral (2:50). Outra praça importante em termos de património é a Praça da Soledad (1:16).
BADAJOZ is a town and municipality of Spain. It is part of the autonomous community of Extremadura. Besides being the largest city in Extremadura, it is also the main economic center of the region. It is located a few kilometers from the border with the Portuguese town of Elvas, at the edge of Guadiana river, one of the most important rivers of the Iberian Peninsula, which crosses the city from east to west, then turning south. The Palmas Gate (0:10) is a monumental gate of the wall surrounding Badajoz. It is one of the most representative monuments of the city. The oldest part of the city is called the old town or historic quarter. In the 2000s, the Upper Square (Plaza Alta) (1:44) and Plaza de España (2:31), two of the most emblematic places of Badajoz, have been restored on a large scale. In the last one we find the town hall (Ayuntamiento) (2:43) and the cathedral (2:50). Another important square in terms of heritage is the Plaza de la Soledad (1:16).
