AFYON - TURKEY Exploring a 3400 year old Fortress / Castle
The Black Castle of Opium / Afyonkarahisar, is fortress on a rock-formation overseeing the entire region at 226 meters.
It got its name Opium as the City is the largest global producer of pharmaceutical opium
It was used for a long time and first fortified by Hittite King Mursilis II at around 1350 B.C
However the Fortress and later on Castle changed hands many times.
Occupied by Phrygians, Lydians and Achaemenid Persians until it was conquered by Alexander the Great. After his death it got into the hands of the Seleucids, Pergamon, then Rome and Byzantium.
The Seljuq Turks then arrived in 1071 and changed its name to Kara Hissar (black castle)
The castle was much fought over during the Crusades and was finally conquered by the Ottomans at around 1429.
