Bamyan Afghanistan.
Bamyan Province, also spelled Bamiyan, Bāmīān or Bāmyān, is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan with the city of Bamyan as its center, located in central parts of Afghanistan. The terrain in Bamyan is mountainous or semi-mountainous, at the western end of the Hindu Kush mountains concurrent with the Himalayas. The province is divided into eight districts, with the town of Bamyan serving as its capital. The province has a population of about 495,557 and borders Samangan to the north, Baghlan, Parwan and Wardak to the east, Ghazni and Daykundi to the south, and Ghor and Sar-e Pol to the west. It is the largest province in the Hazarajat region of Afghanistan and is the cultural capital of the Hazara ethnic group that predominates in the area.

Afghanistan has so much incredible history and culture that is overshadowed because of the past 40 years. Much of the world knows Afghanistan's recent history, but it's incredible ancient culture and historical sites can sometimes be forgotten. Like how the country is home to the world’s oldest surviving oil paintings dating back more than 1,300 years!
The world’s largest Buddha of its kind was also located here. The Buddha looked tall from the ground, but climbing to the top gave me a whole different perspective of just how massive these Buddhas would have been! (And they were carved by hand and stood for more than 1,300 years!)
The local workers were so kind in explaining to us more about the history and beauty of the Bamiyan Valley.
The next video is a difficult one. We were able to visit some local people living in caves around this area. Their financial situation has only gotten worse in the past few years. Yet they still were so kind in welcoming us to their home.

Bamyan lies on the Silk Road, which runs through the Hindu Kush mountain region, in the Bamyan Valley. The Silk Road has been historically a caravan route linking the markets of China with those of the Western world. It was the site of several Buddhist monasteries, and a thriving center for religion, philosophy, and art. Monks at the monasteries lived as hermits in small caves carved into the side of the Bamyan cliffs. Most of these monks embellished their caves with religious statuary and elaborate, brightly colored frescoes, sharing the culture of Gandhara.
Bamyan was a Buddhist religious site from the 2nd century CE up to the time of the muslim conquest of the Abbasid Caliphate under Al-Mahdi in 770 CE. It became again Buddhist from 870 CE until the final Islamic conquest of 977 CE under the Turkic Ghaznavid dynasty.[1] Murals in the adjoining caves have been carbon dated from 438 to 980 CE, suggesting that Buddhist artistic activity continued down to the final occupation by the Muslims.
Beginning on March 2, 2001, and continuing into April, Taliban militants destroyed the Bamiyan Buddhas using dynamite, artillery, rockets, and anti-aircraft guns. Although Islamic custom opposes the display of idols, it is not entirely clear why the Taliban chose to bring down the statues, which had stood for more than 1,000 years under Muslim rule.
