We Tried Traditional Turkish Foods in Canakkale & Ayvalik
Our Turkey adventure beyond Istanbul begins as we leave the city to make our way towards Canakkale but not before stopping to pay our respect at Gallopoli for the ANZAC troops.
Our evening in Canakkale lead us to trying some traditional Turkish foods that you guys have been recommending we try since the last video.
After checking out the Trojan horse from Troy we made jumped on our first Turkish bus experience and headed out to Avyalik to find a few more dishes.
We caught a boat over to the island of Cunda, a vacation island for the Turks.

Cunda Island - Ayvalık, Turkey Travel Vlog 2023 | 4k Uhd 60fps
Cunda Island, also called Alibey Island is the largest of the Ayvalık Islands archipelago in Turkey, which was historically called the Hekatonisa or Moschonisia archipelago in Greek. It is located 16 kilometres (10 miles) east of Lesbos, Greece.
Cunda Island has the character of a typical Aegean resort town. There are frequent bus and ferry services to Cunda Island from the town center of Ayvalık. Cunda Island is connected to Lale Island, and thence to the mainland, by a bridge and causeway built in the late 1960s. This is the first and currently the oldest surviving bridge in Turkey that connects lands separated by a strait.
The main landmark of Cunda Island remains the Taxiarchis Church. The large, former Greek Orthodox cathedral was abandoned and dilapidated, but has now been restored and houses one of the Rahmi M. Koç Museums. Poroselene bay in the north of the island is among Cunda's main sights. In antiquity, it was the home of a dolphin which saved a drowning boy, according to a story mentioned by Pausanias.
In 2007, after a two-year work, all 551 buildings in Cunda Island were inspected and registered by the Turkish Science Academy and Yıldız Technical University Faculty of Architecture, as part of the Culture of Turkey inventory project.

Ayvalık (Greek: Αϊβαλί Aivali, Greek: Κυδωνίες Kydonies) is a district of Balikesir Province in Turkey. Located in the westernmost part of Balıkesir, on the Aegean Sea coast, the district is one of Turkey's most important tourism centers. Although Ayvalık has a large town population during the winter seasons, it experiences a periodic population increase in the summer seasons with the effect of tourism. Having hosted various civilizations in history, Ayvalık has been on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2017.
Ayvalık was known as Kidonia (Ancient Greek: Κυδωνίαι), which means a kind of wild quince in Antiquity. It is thought that the first settlers in the region may have come from Kydona village of Lesbos or Kydonies region of Crete. Some opinions about the name are that Ayvalık is a corrupted form of Aioliki (Eolya). The name Kydonie, which means Ayvalık, has been going on since 330 BC. The name of the city was mentioned as آيوالق in Ottoman Turkish.

Ephesus Ancient City | VANLIFE in TURKEY | Ayvalik Bazaar
This has been a real eye opener! We are learning a lot during our time in Turkey, we knew pretty much nothing about this beautiful country before we came, and had no idea about the numerous ruins we would encounter from Roman History. The Ancient City of Ephesus and the history of Artemis absolutely fascinated us. As well as that enjoying the quaint charm of the people, the food and the culture Turkey has to offer. We have loved exploring the beautiful seaside town of Avaylik, full of cats and cobbled streets, its definitely worth a visit for the Bazaar area alone!! Overlanding all the way from UK through Europe to Turkey has been a very enriching and humbling experience so far.

After building our DIY home in a Citroen Relay camper we spent a year living on the streets of London before quitting our jobs only to be met with lockdown. So after waiting for six months for the borders to reopen in Ireland we have finally hit the road in June 2021 and spent 90 days enjoying vanlife in Spain. Then we spent the next two months enjoying vanlife in Croatia before heading onto Serbia for a month and on towards Turkey where we currently are

Hi everyone,
We made this video walking around the beautiful center of Ayvalık which is located approx. 2 hours North of Izmir. This area is very popular among Turkish tourists and even now in the pre-season it was already busy.
Ayvalık's center has a few main streets with shops, restaurants etc. but the real charm of this place is found in the backstreets where you'll see old stone houses with flowers growing at the doorsteps and cobblestoned streets. There are also some side streets where you'll find people selling homemade products and handicrafts, so you should definitely go off exploring beyond the main streets when you come to Ayvalık.
And have a look at the 150 years old Seytanin Kahvesi/Devil Cafe - it's a charming place in an area where some Turkish movies and series have been shot. Their mulberry (karadut) juice is amazing!
And of course you should try the famous Ayvalık toast that you can find all over town.
