Places to see in ( Ayr - UK )

Places to see in ( Ayr - UK )

Ayr is a large town and former Royal Burgh situated on the west coast of Ayrshire in Scotland, United Kingdom. It is the administrative centre of the South Ayrshire Council area and historic county town of Ayrshire. Ayr is currently the most populated settlement in Ayrshire and is the 12th most populous settlement in Scotland. The town adjoins the smaller town of Prestwick to the north, forming a single continuous urban area with the town.

Ayr was established as a Royal Burgh in 1205, serving as Ayrshire's central marketplace and harbour throughout the Medieval Period and remaining a well-renowned port across the Early Modern Period. On the southern bank of the River Ayr sits the ramparts of a Citadel constructed by Oliver Cromwell during the mid-17th Century. Towards the south of the town is the birthplace of Scottish poet Robert Burns in the suburb of Alloway. With the expansion of the railway during the 19th Century Ayr soon developed into a seaside resort. This remains the case today with tourism occupying a significant sect of the local economy in Ayr through the opening of a Butlin's holiday park on the southern headlands of the town and through the continued presence of the Gaiety Theatre, which ran various shows across the late 20th century attracting performers from across the United Kingdom.

Politically, Ayr is considerably more Conservative-voting than the remainder of Scotland, being represented by a Conservative MP continuously for a period of 91 years – from 1906 (as part of the Ayr Burghs constituency) until 1997. The town forms part of the Ayr constituency in the Scottish Parliament, the first Conservative constituency seat in the Parliament, which has been represented by Conservative MSP John Scott since a by-election in 2000. In the UK Parliament Ayr is situated within the Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock constituency.

Ayr is one of the largest retail centres along the south of Scotland and was recognised as the second healthiest town centre in the United Kingdom by the Royal Society for Public Health in 2014. Ayr has hosted the Scottish Grand National horse-racing steeplechase annually since 1965. The town also accommodates the headquarters of the Ayr Advertiser and Ayrshire Post newspapers and the West FM radio station.

The Ayr railway station has regular services to Glasgow Central station, Edinburgh Waverley, Stranraer, Girvan and Kilmarnock]. All services are operated by Abellio ScotRail. The town is served by the Glasgow Prestwick International Airport just 2 miles (3 km) north from Ayr, which offers regional and domestic air services across Europe and the British Isles. Ayr is served by three major motorway systems.

Top 10 Cities to Visit in Scotland | United Kingdom

Top 10 Cities to Visit in Scotland.

Scotland is generally seen as a destination with beautiful scenery combined with thousands of historic sites and attractions. These include prehistoric stone circles, standing stones and burial chambers, and various Bronze age, Iron age and Stone age remains. There are also many historic castles, houses, and battlegrounds, ruins and museums. Many people are drawn by the culture of Scotland.

The main tourist season is generally from April to October. In addition to these factors, the national tourist agency, Visitscotland, have deployed a strategy of niche marketing, aimed at exploiting, amongst other things, Scotland's strengths in golf, fishing and food and drink tourism.

Number 10. St. Andrews
St. Andrews is a must-visit for anyone with an ounce of interest in golf. Now something of a mecca for golfers, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club in St. Andrews was established in 1754, making it the oldest - and most prestigious - course in the world. In addition to its seven golf courses, the excellent British Golf Museum is worth a visit, too. There's much else to see and do here that's not related to the sport of golf. St. Andrews is a university city, home to the country's oldest seat of higher learning, and one of its top accommodation options when school's out.

Number 9. Dumfries
From Ayr, it's only a short drive to Dumfries, which also harbors a number of Robbie Burns-related attractions. Topping the list is the poet's former home on Burns Street.

Now an excellent museum dedicated to the poet and his life, it was here Burns lived for the last few years of his life; and thanks to its free admission, the museum is also considered the top thing to do for free in Dumfries. Other must visit attractions include the Dumfries Museum.

Number 8. Ayr
the city of Ayr on the west coast of Scotland is well worth exploring, Best known as the birthplace of Robbie Burns. Scotland's most famous poet is celebrated everywhere here. To make sure you don't miss any of the best landmarks related to this legendary Scotsman, follow the Burns' Heritage Trail to Alloway on the outskirts of Ayr.

Number 7. Stirling
The lovely university city of Stirling has a long and rich history, especially as it relates to Scotland's struggle for independence through the centuries. Just 50 minutes' drive from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, Stirling is where Scottish king Robert the Bruce sent the English packing in 1314.

Number 6. Perth
Just a short hop from Dundee - and accessible by rail from Edinburgh, providing a chance to cross the famous Forth Rail Bridge - the small city of Perth offers a pleasant taste of a less-busy Scotland.

Number 5. Inverness
Exploring the Scottish Highlands should be a highlight of your Scotland travel itinerary. And there's no better place to use as your base than the beautiful Highland city of Inverness. From here, you're just a short drive away from such iconic Scottish scenery as Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, and some of the most memorable views you'll experience in a country that, frankly, is full of incredible vistas.

Number 4. Dundee
An easy day trip from Edinburgh, Dundee is famous for its spectacular river crossings. Stretching as far as the eye can see across the Firth of Tay from Dundee all the way to the village of Wormit, Considered one of the world's top rail trips, the views are simply stunning as you travel the structure's two miles of steel.

Number 3. Aberdeen
Known locally as the The Flower of Scotland, Aberdeen, like Glasgow, is full of parks and gardens. By far the most famous is Duthie Park, home to the internationally acclaimed David Welch Winter Gardens, one of the UK's biggest indoor gardens. Here, you can visit and enjoy year-round displays of tropical plants and exotic flowers located in a variety of large greenhouses.

Number 2. Glasgow
Since its transformation from an industrial city to the cultural center of Scotland, Glasgow has become one of the country's top-rated tourist destinations. Part of this transformation has taken place on former industrial land along the River Clyde, which has been rebuilt and revitalized in the past few decades.

Number 1. Edinburgh
Whether you're here for a weekend or a week, Edinburgh offers no end of things to do. While the capital city of Scotland is best known for its incredible medieval castle - Edinburgh castle is consistently ranked as one of the UK's most visited tourist attractions - there are numerous other parts of this beautiful city to explore. old man of storr glencoe things to do in edinburgh

A Tour of AYR in SOUTHERN SCOTLAND | Ayr Beach & City Centre | SWC300 E3

SOUTH WEST COASTAL 300 E3: An evening tour of Ayr in Southern Scotland starting with a walk along the beach and ending up in the city centre admiring the Wallace Tower and the Old Bridge of Ayr. ➡️ See all of my SWC300 Road Trip in Scotland here →

I stopped by the historic town of Ayr in the Lowlands of South Scotland as part of my road trip around the South West Coastal 300. I intended to arrive mid-afternoon but due to there being so many incredible places to stop along the way from Loch Doon I didn’t get there until the early evening. Undeterred I set about exploring and enjoying the last of the daylight.

In this travel vlog I hope to give a brief but detailed tour of the town, starting at the beautiful Ayr Beach - a long sandy beach situated a few miles from the city centre and positioned in between two peninsulas. The golden hour was in full flow as I strolled along the seafront and marvelled at the glowing buildings and distant islands.

After a short drive I found a parking spot and continued my tour of Ayr in the city centre. It was lovely to stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere on the High Street. Before long I had found the Wallace Tower, perhaps the most prominent of all the buildings in Ayr. It was built in the gothic style and first opened between 1857-1858, if you’re anywhere near the city centre you can’t miss it!

There’s lots of interesting architecture in the town and as the night grew dark I found the magnificent Auld Brig of Ayr (Old Bridge of Ayr) which offers some pleasant views up and down Ayr River, even in the twilight!

After enjoying a burger and chips from a local take-away I headed to my hotel at Ayr Racecourse - the Premier Inn. I’ll show you around, tell you what’s included and what’s not, and then share with you the price for my stay.

A short but enjoyable evening in Ayr and I’m looking forward to seeing some more of Scotland’s South West coast in the coming days.
