Avanos, Cappadocia, Turkey travel guide

Travel Videos (Subscribe Now) ????

Avanos, located on the Kızılırmak River (literally Red River), is a town famous for its beautiful pottery that has been produced there for millennia. The production process uses the clay extracted from Kızılırmak, with a characteristic reddish hue. However, Avanos is not only a ceramic workshop but also a charming town where it is possible to stroll along a riverside promenade. It is also an alternative accommodation base for exploring Cappadocia.

Restaurants

Surprisingly, it is relatively difficult to find a tasty meal in the restaurant in Avanos. Based on the observation of Turkish tourists we can conclude that the most popular eateries in town are McDonald's and Mado. McDonald's does not need further elaboration, but its popularity in Avanos is amazing - at lunchtime it is practically besieged. It is the only McDonald's restaurant in Cappadocia, and it is located on the northern bank of the river, on Atatürk Street No. 53.

On the opposite bank of the Kızılırmak River, in a large park, there is Mado café. This Turkish network began its career as an ice cream parlour, but over time its menu has been extended not only to other desserts but also to breakfasts and lunch dishes.

We have personally tested two restaurants serving Turkish cuisine in Avanos. The first of them was Urfa Sofrasi, boasting the preparation of typical dishes of the south-eastern Anatolia. Unfortunately, in our eyes, it fared very poorly as the portions were modest, the prices - unexpectedly high, and placing an order - very problematic because of the lack of dishes listed on the menu. The restaurant is located in the centre of Avanos, on Atatürk Street.

The second restaurant we tested - Restoran Zelve (38.719214, 34.847806) - fared much better. The spacious interior, an elegant design and a waiters bustling about made a slightly intimidating impression. Meanwhile, it turned out that it was worth a look. We welcomed plates of appetisers, especially cheese and hot bread, served while we waited for the main course. The star of the menu is so-called Cappadocia kebab, pared by the local chef. These are succulent cuts of beef roasted with vegetables in a clay pot.

Orientation

Avanos is divided into two parts - the northern and the southern ones - by Kızılırmak River, flowing through its centre. The areas located on the banks of the river are the very centre of Avanos, with hotels, guesthouses, offices, and ceramic workshops. The banks of Kızılırmak are also a great place for evening walks or a photo session with ducks. An interesting idea for tourists is the possibility to cruise on the river in a gondola in the Venetian style.

The route D300 from Nevşehir to Kayseri is the southern bypass of Avanos, and the road to Göreme through Çavuşin leads to the south from Avanos.

Nearby Avanos

In the vicinity of Avanos, it is worth to visit Sarıhan caravanserai, built during the Seljuk period. It stands 7 km to the east of Avanos centre (38.711799, 34.909582) and it is difficult to miss while travelling along the D300 road to Kayseri. In the evenings, whirling dervish ceremonies are organised there, for the entertainment of tourists, but the building can also be visited during the daytime. Admission is payable and costs 3 TL.

Aficionados of prehistory can search for two prehistoric mounds in the vicinity of Avanos. Avanos Tumulus is located 7 km west of the city (38.717899, 34.768214) and Zank Tumulus - 4 km to the north-west of Sarilar village.

In the district of Avanos there are also two places extremely popular among the tourists - Özkonak underground city (38.8068, 34.8414) and Çavuşin village (38.6735, 34.8395). In Çavuşin, there are ancient rock churches. Less well known but also very attractive sight of the district is Belha Monastery (38.790599, 34.823799).

David’s Been Here takes you to Cappadocia, Turkey to explore the best places to eat in the region. Cappadocia is known for its unusual rock formations and traditional handicrafts, as well as for its supreme hot air ballooning, but there are also several local foods to try.

In this video David showcases his favorite restaurants in the towns of Goreme, Avanos, Mustafapasha, and Urgup. The first restaurant David visits is around the corner from his hotel in Goreme. Restaurant Dibek is a family-owned enterprise in a rustic setting. Here David shows us what a traditional clay pot meal is like. Basically, the kebab (meat) is placed inside a clay pot, sealed, and baked in a wood burning oven. The kebab is allowed to simmer in its own juices, making it super flavorful. Dibek serves its clay pot kebabs with rice, salad, bread, and hummus.

Next up in Goreme is Sedef Restaurant. You can’t miss this place - it’s situated right in the town center along the main street. Sedef serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the best part is it won’t break the bank. Sedef also serves clay pot meals with delicious sides. David tries some local wine from the Cappadocia region.

Now onto the third restaurant in Goreme, A La Turca. This one has more of a fine dining atmosphere. As you can see, this restaurant has beautiful views of the town. Although the menu features international food, the kebabs are a must-try! Remember to make a reservation in advance if you would like to sit on the terrace. The restaurant is quite large, but still manages to feel cozy and intimate. If you’re not in the mood for another clay pot meal, they serve international food as well.

The next place that David visits is Avanos, a town known for its pottery. Actually, all the clay used to make the clay pot kebabs comes from the riverbanks in Avanos. Here David has lunch with his guide at Bizim Ev Restaurant. In Turkish, Bizim Ev means ‘our house’. The restaurant is situated in the owner’s family home, which is a beautiful stone house in the center of town. They have a wine cellar and space to accommodate large groups. You can see family photos and memorabilia on the walls. The baked mushrooms with cheese and homemade baklava were amazing!

Urfa Sofrasi is another one of David’s favorite restaurants in Avanos, especially because it is budget-friendly and in the center of town. The lunch specials are generous and served with freshly baked bread. David enjoyed a filling meal here with his guide.

Next stop on David’s gastronomic tour is Mustafapasha, a town that used to be an old Greek village. David dines at Old Greek House restaurant, which is named for being just that. This is a beautiful Greek home that is now a hotel and restaurant run by Suleyman and his family. His wife cooks int he kitchen and they serve up traditional Turkish dishes

David couldn’t resist dining at a fancy restaurant while in Cappadocia, and so he went to Dimrit in Urgup after several people recommended it to him. Dimrit even let David crack open his own clay pot meal. Dimrit offers the perfect setting for a romantic night out after a busy day of sightseeing.

And there you have David’s favorite places to eat in Cappadocia. It is his hope you will try this mouth-watering cuisine for yourself during your visit.

Top Things to See & Do in Cappadocia, Turkey

???? WATCH: Top 10 Things to Do in Rhodes Island, Greece
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

David scratches another one off of his bucket list with this epic trip
through the region of Cappadocia. Watch as we show you the top things to see and do in Cappadocia.

First stop is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Goreme Open Air Museum. This area supported a large Christian community for several centuries. By the 4th century, Saint Basel had founded various religious settlements in the area. The Göreme Open Air Museum is a testament to St. Basil’s influence – it is a place where daily worship was carried out in seclusion.

Then onto some arts and crafts. Turkey is known for its intricate hand woven rugs (Kilim), and Cappadocia is a great place to see them being made and also to purchase them if you are interested. David toured Gallery Cappadocia and spoke with the manager about why people should come see the rugs being made. Also, the selection here is amazing! Shopping for rugs in Istanbul can be a headache if you don’t speak the language, which is why many tourists instead prefer to shop for them in Cappadocia where there are less crowds.

David then heads to the town of Avanos to visit the Firca pottery workshop. There, the artists are working meticulously to freehand patterns and calligraphy. Visitors will get a demonstration on how the pottery is formed and will get the chance to browse an extensive inventory of remarkable quality.

We can then see the cluster of fairy chimneys in Cavusin Village, during which David gives us an explanation of how these unusual rock formations are formed. Basically, wind erosion leave each rocky mound with a “hat.”

The Kaymakli Underground City (UNESCO) is another great example of the wonder Cappadocia holds. During the Roman Era, Christian communities used them to hide from religious persecution. There are several underground cities in Cappadocia, many of which are interconnected with tunnels. Kaymakli is several layers deep, with long passages, narrow steps, and a complex tunnel system connecting the rooms. Definitely one of the top things to see and do in Cappadocia!

Back outside David tours the Valley of the Monks in the village of Pasabag. Pasabag valley contains some of the most striking fairy chimneys in Cappadocia. After the hike, David strolls the town of Mustafapasa.

A tour of the Saruhan was an interesting experience, especially since the building was used as an inn for traders traveling along the Silk Road. David continues his journey into the Zelve Valley, the village of Urgup to see some of Cappadocia’s most famous fairy chimneys, and up to the top of the castle of Uchisar to get fantastic panoramic views.

Finally, David shows us the number 1 thing to do in Cappadocia… take a hot air balloon ride! This is the best way to experience Cappadocia from above and appreciate the distinct rock formations unlike anywhere else on earth.

If you’re planning on heading to Cappadocia, we highly recommend Euphrates Tours. They helped us explore this fascinating region and do everything you watched in this video.

Cappadocia Turkey BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN 2 DAYS | 4K UHD 60FPS | GOREME,LOVE VALLEY,TURKISH FOODS

Cappadocia incorporates parts of the cities of Aksaray, Nevşehir, Niğde, Kayseri and Kırşehir. For most people, the name Cappadocia suggests the towns of Uçhisar, Göreme, Avanos, Ürgüp, Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı and Ihlara, where the land has been shaped into fantastic forms over the course of millions of years. Fairy chimneys that seem mysterious and cities and houses of worship that extend many meters deep into the earth are all enveloped in an atmosphere that is ethereal and unworldly.
Göreme Open Air Museum

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985, Göreme casts its enigmatic charm for miles. The churches carved into these soft rocks sit still with mystery intact.

Göreme thought to have been used as a necropolis by the inhabitants of Venessa (Avanos) during Roman times. The churches of Durmuş Kadir, Yusuf Koç, El Nazar, Saklı, Meryem Ana (Virgin Mary) and Kılıçlar cast a spellbinding effect on visitors. The Göreme Open Air Museum is where the ideas of Christianity were unified by St Basil the Great and his brothers. The architectural details and frescoes of the Tokalı church, Convent of Monks and Nuns, Chapel of St Basil, and the St. Barbara, Elmalı, Yılanlı, Karanlık and Çarıklı churches seem as alive today as when they were new.

Uçhisar
Imagine a gigantic, porous rock stretching towards the sky and now imagine you are standing on top of that said rock. If you are not in a plane, a balloon or a hawk, the best spot you will soak in the geography would be here, Uçhisar Castle. Uçhisar also has one of the most beautiful walking paths of Cappadocia going right through Pigeon Valley. You should wander through the tunnels opened up by the streams mighty flow, while listening to the pigeons flapping their wings as they leave their nest and saunter through the giant formations in the valley in awe, for knowing that they were sculpted by no one but the nature itself. Today, the castle is surrounded by shops and stalls, selling many souvenirs such as carpets, marble ornaments, mirrors and of course flavorsome dried nuts and fruits keeping you company.

Avanos
Its unusual livelihood is what makes Avanos (Vanessa) intriguing. As the Kızılırmak has made its way flowing patiently through Avanos, the soft and oily clay sourced from the former riverbeds have been the highlight here –making Avanos the home of pottery dating way back to the Hittites. Each individual flaw in clay brings out the authentic beauty in these handmade pieces, then colored in earthy tones and of course turquoise. You can always join a pottery workshop and create your own “happy accident”, shop goodies in lively bazaars and lighten your mood by the riverside.

Red Valley (Kızıl Vadi)
Every other spot here serves the best dreamy sunset, but one sets itself apart from every other: Red Valley. Located just near Çavuşin Village and Ortahisar, Red Valley draws the most romantic and unforgettable moments as the sky takes on crimson red tones. Visitors are encouraged to start their walk through the rare formations red tuff creates just before sunset and take their place at the viewing terrace just at the right moment, to soak in the glamour.

#Avanos is known as Zu-winasa during the #Hittite period and as #Nenassa according to some historians. In ancient Greek and Byzantine times, it was called Venessa. Venessa historian Strabo's Geography work, written at that time, is shown as the third important center in the Kingdom of Cappadocia after #Kayseri and Kemerhisar regions, and its religious and political importance stemming from the cult of God Zeus is mentioned.

Cappadocia, Turkey 2022 | Best Things To Do

Cappadocia looks like a dream destination on Instagram, from hot air balloons, underground cities, AND whimsical & unique rock formations, but does it live up to the hype? Here is a real look at Cappadocia in 2022. Decide for yourself!!

We explored Cappadocia for about a week, exploring different areas in the region. We ranked our 5 best things to do in Cappadocia.
The 5 best things to do in Cappadocia Turkey include:

5. Trying the Testi Kebab

The testi kebab was sealed in a pottery vessel and lit on fire. The waiter then cracks it open and pours out the DELICIOUS stew. Beef, onions, tomatoes and tons of spices make up this dish. The kebab was flavorful, the portion was large and service was very friendly!

4. Uchisar Castle

At number 4 we have Uchisar Castle, which towers above the Cappadocia valleys and is the highest point in the area. The castle is the biggest and most beautifully carved rock formation in the region.

Honeycombed with tunnels, the twin slabs of volcanic tuff rock known as Uchisar Castle rear up above the little town of Uchisar and Cappadocia’s dramatic landscape in mesmerizing style. Having a geostrategic position, dominating whole city from the top of the heap, this magnificent castle presents the visitors a dreamy panorama area with its miraculous landscape. It has a splendid environment providing the fantastic hues of red on Mt. Erciyes at sunset, the quiet, refreshing valleys and the rainbow of colour created by land and sky.

3. Goreme Open Air Museum

Göreme Open-Air Museum isn’t your everyday museum. It’s actually a large outdoor area, home to various monasteries, churches and chapels carved out of the rock. Some of them date back to as early as the 4th century.

Göreme Open Air Museum is impressive; a series of rugged, rocky cones that have been hollowed out to form a network of centuries-old chapels, churches, and homes. You will find over 30 rock-hewn churches here, built by the Byzantine Christians.

2. Derinkuyu Underground City
Cappadocia is extremely fascinating and the underground cities are a big reason why. You can find approximately 200 underground cities in Cappadocia, which were built to protect the inhabitants from outsiders. This allowed 1000s of people to live their lives in total secrecy! Today, you can visit some of these underground cities and explore various levels where you will find dining, living and storage rooms.

The most thoroughly excavated of Cappadocia’s many underground cities, Derinkuyu spans an impressive eight floors, reaching depths of over 280 feet. It takes its modern name from the town overhead, a Turkish name meaning “deep well''. The underground labyrinth of cave rooms and tunnels, is fed by a remarkable ventilation system and provides fascinating insight into Cappadocia’s troglodyte history.

1. Hot Air Balloon

The best thing to do in Cappadocia is to go on a hot air balloon ride. Seeing the incredible rock formations from above is one of the most magical experiences we’ve had during our world travels so far. The beauty of the sunrise colors and 100s of other balloons floating around us was almost indescribable.

The quintessential Cappadocian experience demands an early rise, preferably pre-dawn before the sun has begun to climb beyond the crags and karsts of the other-worldly landscape. After all, hot air balloon rides require the steady calm of early morning before the wind speed rises and the glorious golden light of a sunrise.
