La batería de Cenizas fue construida entre 1930 y 1934,por el gobierno de Primo de Rivera del Plan de Defensa para Bases Navales de 1926. la cima del monte de Cenizas fue el lugar elegido lugar proximo a la bahía de Portmán Cartagena para las baterias de costa, desde donde se cubría buena parte del litoral, se emplazaron dos cañones cuyos tubos tienen más de 17 metros de longitud, fabricados por la casa británica Vickers Amstrong en su factoría de Sheffield, que podían disparar un proyectil de casi una tonelada a 35 kilómetros de distancia, estos eran unos de los cañones artilleros más modernos y eficaces de la época. los progresos técnicos en el arte militar fueron dejando a este emplazamiento y sus armas principales ya desfasadas. Y así, en 1994, la Bateria militar de las Cenizas dejaba de estar en servicio y era abandonada, siendo el la actualidad un Bien de Interes Cultural formando parte de la red de senderos de Cartagena.
