Top 10 Camino de Santiago starting points

What are are the most popular Camino de Santiago starting points? Where do most pilgrims start their journey?

According to statistics released by the Pilgrims Office in Santiago de Compostela for 2012, these are the Top 10 Camino starting points (top 5 are in the French Way). These figures only reflect those walking to Santiago AND registered by the Pilgrims Office (meaning they received their Compostela or certificate). These statistics don't take into account the number of pilgrims walking sections of the Camino but not finishing in Santiago or those walking to Santiago but not applying for the Compostela. However, the figures give us a good indication of the most popular spots to begin your Camino journey:

1- Sarria

40,734 (21,16% of the total) pilgrims started the Camino de Santiago in Sarria in 2012. Sarria is just over 100km away from Santiago so it is the minimum distance required to receive the Compostela.

2- Saint Jean Pied de Port
22,214 (11,54%) started over the French border, in Saint Jean Pied de Port, at the foot of the Pyrenees and starting point of the French Way / Camino Francés.

3-León
10,406 (5,41%) chose the city of León, approximately 300km away. The Montes de León are one of the highlights along this section.

4- O Cebreiro
10,315 (5,36%) started in the mountain village of O Cebreiro, Galicia.

5-Roncesvalles
8,468 (4,40%) skipped the most challenging day walking across the Pyrenees and started in the village of Roncesvalles (790kms from Santiago), still in the Pyrenees.

6-Tui (Portuguese Way)
8,436 (4,38%) began their Camino de Santiago in the border town of Tui, separated from Portugal only by the River Miño. Tui is 100km from Santiago, on the Portuguese Way.

7-Ponferrada
7,765 (4,03%) started in Ponferrada, capital of El Bierzo region, roughly 200km away from Santiago. From Ponferrada to Galicia, you'll get some stunning (but challenging) mountain walking and you will pass the famous 'cruz de ferro' (iron cross).

8-Porto (Portuguese Way)
Picturesque Porto, UNESCO world heritage city, and home of Port wine is another very popular starting point for the Portuguese Way. 7,641 (3,97%) pilgrims chose it as their departing point in 2012.

9-Astorga
Astorga, 30km outside León, marked the beginning of the Camino journey for 5,666 (2,94%) people. From there, the French Way heads up to the stunning Montes de León, El Bierzo and then Galicia.

10-Pamplona
Pamplona, in Navarra, famous for its run bull, was the starting point for 4,172 (2,17%) pilgrims.

Just Passing Through ASTORGA, SPAIN

2018 Sep 14 -- On our way to Santiago de Compostela from Leon, we passed through Astorga, a lovely quiet town which lies at the junction of the French route and Vía de la Plata route of Camino de Santiago. One interesting aspect to note about this town is that it has a rich fossil record and priceless information about the earliest humans ever lived in Spain. This town was used to be a Roman city, founded in 14 BC, named as Asturica Augusta, where the name has evolved to as Astorga. Roman remains still exist and well-preserved, such as the Medieval Cistern, the Roman wall in the Garden of the Synagogue, the Domus of the Mosaic of the Bear and the Birds at Calle Padres Redentoristas, just to name a few. This town is known for its architectural buildings in the presence of its magnificent Catedral de Santa María de Astorga, Gaudi's palace (Episcopal Palace), the town hall and so on. This video shows exactly what transpired during this short visit to Astorga before heading to Santiago de Compostela.

ASTORGA (LEÓN)

???????? The capital of the county of Maragatería in the province of León offers a rich medieval legacy, the result of its location at the crossroads of: the Pilgrim's Road to Santiago de Compostela and the Ruta de la Plata (Silver Road).
Its walled town preserves churches, convents and hospitals which take travellers back to the purest tradition of the Pilgrim's Road. Another outstanding feature in the town's streets is a culminating work by the Modernist architect Antoni Gaudí: the Bishop's Palace.
Astorga stands at the confluence of two important Spanish routes which in past times were pilgrims' itineraries. The older of the two, the Silver Route, dates from Roman times. This itinerary (Gijón-Seville) was the route used to transport the metal extracted from the mines in the north of the peninsula to the shipping ports in the south. During the Middle Ages it was used by Arab and Christian troops at the time of the conquest and the reconquest. This excellent communications route throughout the centuries then became the way for pilgrims heading for Santiago de Compostela. The Way of Saint James, the Jacobean route that has been declared a part of our World Heritage by the UNESCO, also runs through Astorga. This was part of a series of paths that criss-crossed Europe and northern Spain on the way to Santiago de Compostela, a holy city by virtue of being the site of the tomb of Saint James the Apostle.

Enjoy this walking tour!

Astorga to Rabanal on the Camino de Santiago

The end of the Meseta was in Leon, so the flattest section of the Camino has ended. We felt it today, since we had a small incline on the Camino from 860 to 1152 m.

Our distance: 20 km, approximately 12.5 miles from Astorga to Rabanal.

A must see is the bridge that leads into the town of Hospital de Orbigo. The bridge is medieval that goes across the Rio Orbigo.

Stop at the Cowboy Bar - take a photo. It's eclectic and a fun place to stop for a beverage and snack. It's an American saloon in the middle of Spain!

In Astorga there are many places to visit, so we spend an extra day here.
-Palacio de Gaudi, May-Oct, 10-8 pm, 8 euro
-Astorga Cathedral
-Museum of Chocolate, Tues-Sat, 10:30 to 1400, 1630 to 1900,
CLOSED MONDAYS.

In RABANAL
A MUST SEE is the Benedictine Monastery of San Salvador de Monte Irago where you can listen to a Gregorian Chant at 7 pm and at 9 pm there are blessing for pilgrims!

Camino de Santiago - Days 23-24, Astorga Has a Lot To See!

We get yet another beautiful sunrise as we head towards the town of Astorga. We are only doing 22km today and starting early so we can have a long time in Astorga in order to see the sights. You could easily have a zero in this town with its cathedral and the Gaudi Palace to explore. It was a jam packed day and we got a great place to stay for the night to enjoy it. Boy did we get an even more beautiful sunrise the next day!
The payoff for having a nice place is a night in a dorm, cheap, but with a possibility of 36 other people! Fortunately it was only half full but there were the snorers nevertheless.

Camino Frances: to Astorga

Yet another great day on the Camino! I’ve got about 165 miles to Santiago but who’s counting! Astorga is a neat little city and I got to tour the cathedral and a Gaudí Palace. Buen camino!

Distance walked: 10 miles

#22 Hospital de Órbigo – Astorga | full étape | Camino Francés

22nd étape of the Camino Francés from Hospital de Órbigo to Astorga, taking a right turn at 00:10 over Villares de Órbigo and Santibáñez de Valdeiglesias.

All étapes/videos to Santiago de Compostela are going to be uploaded over the next days and weeks.

After many journeys on the Camino de Santiago in the past ten years, this time the focus lies on the video project. Thus not a lot of stopping and exploring during the étapes (some breaks and encounters are cut out).

COVID-19: Filmed in the summer of 2020 when Spain and the Camino including most albergues were open again for a few weeks after the first lockdown. Masks in all albergues, bars/restaurants and when crossing cities. There will likely never again be as few people on the Camino as in summer of 2020.

Hope you enjoy the video. Thank you so much for watching and maybe see you on the Camino one day :-)

BUEN CAMINO!

Camino de Santiago 2021 | Day 24 | Villavante to Astorga

A daily vlog of my journey on the Camino Frances in Northern Spain in September and October of 2021, during Covid and a Holy Year. This vlog is day 24 and chronicles my day walking from Villavante to Astorga along the Villar de Mazarife variant, a distance of 21.6 kilometers.

Please be kind with comments and feedback; this is the first time I've ever done a vlog (obvious, right? LOL), and it was primarily created with the intention of saving memories, and sharing with friends and family. If you enjoy it, however, please give it a like. Alternatively, if you don't, give it your thumbs down.

If you have any questions about walking the Camino, drop them in the comments section and I'll try to respond to them as soon as I can.
