Ashby-de-la-Zouch, often shortened to Ashby, is a small market town and civil parish in North West Leicestershire, England, within the National Forest. It is a sister city with Pithiviers in north-central France and lies close to the Derbyshire border.
Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle was of importance from the 15th to the 17th centuries. In the 19th century the town became a spa town. Before the growth of Coalville, it was the chief town in north-west Leicestershire. In the 19th century its main industries were ribbon manufacture, coal mining, and brickmaking. The town ofAshby-de-la-Zouch was served by the Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line of the Midland Railway from 1849. The civil parish includes the hamlets of Shellbrook west of the town and Boundary to its north-west.
Nearby villages include Lount, Normanton le Heath, Smisby, Packington, Donisthorpe, Oakthorpe, Moira, Measham and Coleorton. The towns of Swadlincote, Burton-upon-Trent, Melbourne and Coalville are all within 10 miles (16 km) of Ashby, with the city of Derby 11 1⁄2 miles (19 km) due north. The town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch is situated at the heart of The National Forest and approximately 24 miles (39 km) due south of the Peak District National Park. It lies on the A42 between Tamworth and Nottingham.
Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle was built in the 12th century. The town and castle came into the possession of the Hastings family in 1464 and William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings enhanced its fortifications from 1473. St Helen's Church is Ashby's original Anglican parish church. It is a late 15th-century Perpendicular Gothic building. The Ivanhoe Baths was an 1822 Neo-Grecian building with a Doric façade 200 feet (61 m) long.
The Grade II listed, 19th-century water tower, located in the town's cemetery, on Moira Road, has been approved for conversion to a house, despite protests from English Heritage, Ashby Civic Society, and local residents. In the 19th century Ashby's main industry was leather working. There was also a cotton textile factory and a glue factory. Ashby was surrounded by coalmines but was never a coal mining town itself.
The town was to be served by Ashby Canal from 1804 but the canal never reached Ashby, as it was constructed only to the town of Moira. Ashby had a station on the Leicester to Burton upon Trent Line of the Midland Railway from 1845. After the canal was abandoned in stages between 1944 and 1966, British Railways withdrew the passenger service and closed Ashby de la Zouch railway station in September 1964. The railway remains open for freight.
Every May, Ashby holds an arts festival sponsored by the district council. This features local artists, musicians, songwriters, poets, performers, and story tellers. Ashby Statutes, a travelling funfair, is held every September. Instituted by Royal Statute, it was originally a hiring fair, where domestic servants and farmworkers would be hired for the year. During the winter months, Britain is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is 5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time and 10 hours behind Sydney. Western standard time is five hours behind.

Ashby de la Zouch Castle is a partically ruined fortification in the town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, England.
As with many of the castles, priories and ruins I visited in the Covid summer of 2020, it's the detail that I find most interesting: Cannon ball pot marks, construction techniques and more.

Ashby de la Zouch Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Leicestershire, and around 15 miles south of Derby, is the town of Ashby de la Zouch.
The town's distinctive name means 'ash tree farm/settlement', with the 'de la Zouch' suffix added in 1160 when Norman nobleman Alain de Parrhoet La Zouch inherited his position as Lord of the Manor by marriage. Locally, it is commonly referred to as, simply, Ashby.
In the late 15th century Edward IV granted Ashby Manor to William, Lord Hastings, who converted it into a castle and also rebuilt St Helen's Church nearby in the Perpendicular Gothic style. The church would later be enlarged in the late 19th century.
During the English Civil War Ashby de la Zouch Castle was occupied by a Royalist garrison. The castle was surrendered to the Parliamentarians in 1646 following a year-long siege, and later slighted to prevent further use. The castle would later be referenced in Walter Scott's historical novel Ivanhoe from the early 19th century.
Historically, skilled craftsmen including silversmiths, swordsmiths and clock makers operated in the vicinity of Market Street. From the early 19th century Ashby de la Zouch became a spa town following the discovery of water with medicinal properties in the mining village of Moira nearby. The Ivanhoe Baths were built in 1822, followed by the adjacent Hastings Hotel in 1827 (now Royal Hotel). The baths would eventually close in 1884 due to falling visitor numbers, apparently caused by a surge in popularity of seaside resorts.
In 1849 a railway station opened in Ashby de la Zouch. This formed part of the Midland Railway's line between Leicester and Burton-on-Trent. However, in 1964 the station was closed as part of the notorious Beeching cuts, along with over 2000 other stations across the country in an effort to encourage motorway travel. Today the nearest railway station is Burton-on-Trent. Direct bus services from Leicester, Coalville and Swadlincote, among other locations, are available.

Conkers is an award-winning attraction in the heart of the National Forest. Conkers is a wonderful back to nature day out. Outdoors you will find sand and water play, quirky playgrounds, a sensory trail, Fairy Labyrinth and a human-size rabbit warren with tunnels. The highlight is the barefoot walk. I recommend you take a towel to clean your feet afterwards.
There are paths with water, rocks, pebbles, sand, straw and more. It’s quite an experience. Also outdoors you will find a Sky viewing tower and a maze, plus extra activities such as bushcraft. You can hop on one of their regular train rides on the Conkerchoo II to the other end of the park. They have recently added a few new additions including a splash play area.

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

This time we are going to two castles,Ashby de la zouch and Tamworth.
Short history about castles.
Ashby de la zouch castle.
Remains of fortified manor house.Founded by the Norman noble Alain de Parrhoet,la Zouch,this fortified manor house dates from the 12th century and was extended by his descendants over the next three centuries.
During the English Civil War the castle was subject to a prolonged siege between September 1645 and its surrender in March 1646.
The surrender terms demanded that the castle be slighted (demolished).
Tamworth castle.
Well preserved Norman motte and bailey castle.Although the site has been fortified since Anglo-Saxon times,the current Norman motte and bailey castle dates from the 11th century.Added to and extended over the centuries,it includes a keep with a 12th century gate tower,a 13th century three storey residential north range,a 17th century Jacobean south range,all linked by an oak timbered Great Hall dating from the 15th century.During the English Civil War,the castle was captured by parliamentary forces after a brief siege.Between the 17th and 19th centuries,the castle had several different owners before being bought at auction by Tamworth Corporation.It opened as a museum in 1899.

St Helen's Church is the Anglican parish church of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, in the deanery of North West Leicestershire and the Diocese of Leicester. There was a church in the town in the 11th century, but the core of the present building mainly dates from work started in 1474, when the church was rebuilt by William Hastings at the same time that he converted his neighbouring manor house into a castle. The church was refurbished in about 1670 to create more space, but the large and increasing size of the congregation led to further work in 1829, and a major rebuild in 1878–80, including the widening of the nave by the addition of two outer aisles.
