Off the coast of Northwest Africa, Gran Canaria is an amazing island of gorgeous scenery, endless stretches of sandy beaches, otherworldly dunes and quaint towns. A year-round destination like no other, Gran Canaria is a fantastic place to escape the cold as temperatures on the island rarely fall below 25°C throughout the year.
Driving is the best way to explore Gran Canaria. In this video, we’ve put together a 10-day Gran Canaria itinerary that has it all: from ancient ruins and picturesque villages to dramatic viewpoints and local businesses worth visiting.

USEFUL TIPS ABOUT YOUR GRAN CANARIA ROAD TRIP
- Parking in Gran Canaria is relatively easy. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and other large towns, always look for the right parking line colour. White lines mean you can park for free. Blue lines mean you can park for a fee that you can pay at the nearest ticket machine. Stay away from yellow and green parking lines. Alternatively, you can park in a large parking lot for a fee. Sometimes, your car rental company may offer free parking near your hotel.
- More often than not, there are more than one ways to get from point A to B. In this video, we usually suggest taking the most scenic route rather than the fastest or easiest one. Also, driving along the same roads and passing through the same spots is inevitable sometimes, but we did our best to add as much variety as possible to this 10-day Gran Canaria itinerary. Last but not least, some places may seem very close to one another on the map but there isn't always a quick road to connect them.
- If you're wondering about the best car type to rent in Gran Canaria, just go with the one you feel comfortable driving. We went for a FIAT 500 and it was perfect!

- Maspalomas Sand Dunes one of the must visit if you are in Gran Canaria-
- To appreciate the essence of a place and soak up its atmosphere there is nothing better than getting to the highest point. In Gran Canaria this is the Pico de las Nieves lookout point right in the centre of the island.
- Mirador del Balcon viewpoint is in the far west of Gran Canaria and hangs over the sea at the top of a steep cliiff edge with spectacular views out over the Atlantic Ocean. From the viewpoint you get a clear view of a zigzag wall of sea cliffs called the “Dragon’s Tail”. Turning back to look at the island you see the La Arena Valley and the wide, green La Aldea de San Nicolás.
- Las Vacas ravine has become a well-known tourist attraction for visitors of Gran Canaria because of its peculiar rock formations called Tobas de Colores which bear a certain resemblance to the famous Antelope Canyon in the United States.
- Las Canteras beach in northeast Gran Canaria, right in the capital city Las Palmas, is amongst Europe’s most famous city beaches.Its natural offshore lava reef acts as a wavebreak and protects the sand and the exuberant marine life that make Las Canteras a top snorkeling spot.Las Canteras is an ideal beach for long barefoot walks as it’s golden sand stretches for over two kilometres. during the day you can sunbathe by the sand sculptures, rent parasols and loungers or surf at the southern end.
- Barranco del Medio with Los Azulejos de Veneguera is one of those surprises that make me pull the car over, pull the hand brake and run out with the camera and the drone :)
- Puerto de las Nieves in Agaete, Gran Canaria, is one of the most charming coastal towns on the Canarian island that is worth visiting for a few days of rest and relaxation.
Its spectacular landscapes (The El Dedo de Dios Monument), warm climate, leisure sites, and natural pools make the Puerto de las Nieves in Gran Canaria an appetizing stop to enjoy the best sailor’s style of the archipelago.
- Tufia hamlet is famous for it's existential battle against the Spanish government. Its beach, tiny as it is, is the headquarters of resistance.
Little more than a cluster of whitewashed houses by the sea, Tufia is far more shabby than chic and only has a chiringuito bar during the summer. However, it's become a battleground between the Spanish government and residents.
Built without permission in the 1960s in an area that is now a nature reserve, almost all of Tufia's 90 houses are scheduled for demolition. The locals are fighting to protect their seaside homes and have even arranged international art festivals to publicise their fight. It'll take a brave politician to send in the bulldozers as Tufia is a cause celebré amongst Gran Canaria's alternative crowd.
- This neighbourhood in the Gáldar municipality promises fun right down the street, since that’s where you’ll find both the thoroughfare and the sea. Native painter and expressionist Antonio Padrón used to spend summers with his family on the beach of Sardina del Norte.
This paradise in the north of Gran Canaria has Sardina Beach, several piers, Roqueta beach, and Barranquillo del Vino, where expert swimmers bathe. The Sardina Lighthouse area is ideal for diving, spearfishing, and hiking. Skirting the coast from there, you’ll reach the town of Gáldar.

The best roadtrip around Gran Canaria is this circular ride, that goes around the island of Gran Canaria on the Canary island. We visit Arucas, Maspalomas Sand Dunes, Mirador El Balcón and more.
With the car we drive from Las Palmas to Arucas where we enjoy some amazing architecture. Then we enjoy some amazing views on the West Side of Gran Canaria with cliffs that you will only see on this side of Gran Canaria. The best place to see those views is from Mirador El Balcón.
From Mirador El Balcón we drive to the famous Sand Dunes at Maspalomas. Of course we visit some volcanic pools at La Aldea but not much later we arrive at the sand dunes in Gran Canaria.
We visit the Sand Dunes both from Maspalomas side as Playa del Inglés. After visiting this great sand dunes nature reserve in Gran Canaria, also sometimes seen as the desert of Gran Canaria.

In this video, I travel to Gran Canaria and show you the 12 best things to do and places to visit on this beautiful island. Since I travel to Gran Canaria for a press trip, I get the chance to explore some unique places that are not known to many tourists.
Gran Canaria is one of the eight Canary Islands in Spain, it is located off the northwestern coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Even though geographically it is closer to Morroco and the African Continent, it is part of Spain and classed as part of Europe.
Gran Canaria is one of the prettiest places in Spain and it is a popular destination for holidaymakers. Perhaps most tourists travel to Gran Canaria for its beautiful sandy beaches, but this island with its diverse landscape, beautiful mountains, stunning coastline and delicious cuisine has much more to offer.

Arucas is a municipality and town in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands. It’s famous for its impressive church of San Juan Bautista, popularly known as the Cathedral of Arucas. Arucas is located 12km from the capital of the island.
The town is lovely to walk around in and get a coffee or lunch, and there is a beautiful park also.

Travel through Gran Canaria on a highlights tour, Spain
Join us as we explore the most beautiful valleys of Gran Canaria! In this episode, we will take you on a journey through some of the most picturesque and unique landscapes in the island.
Our first stop is Arucas, where we visit the unique neo-gothic church of Saint John and climb up through the center of the island with magnificent views of the north and Las Palmas, where we reach Teror - the pilgrimage village. Here we find the typical architecture of the island and very impressive trees. The tour also includes a tasting of wine and jam made from cactus, giving you a true taste of the island.
We will continue exploring the deep valleys and stunning mountain views including the majestic Roque Nublo and Teide as we climb higher. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed a magnificent view of the northwest of the island with Tenerife peaking in the background. Once over the peak, we carry on past the almond trees of Ayacata and continue passing by the villages of San Bartolomé and Fataga.
A stop at El Mirador de Tunte will give you an opportunity to taste the local refreshments like hot chocolate with rum or fresh mango juice. And if you are looking to purchase Aloe Vera for your sunburns, this is the place! You will find the best quality Aloe Vera at a reasonable price. Don't wait until the last stop at the Aloe Vera plantation, where you will pay a premium.
