Kars is a strong city in terms of history and geography. Kars, which is beautiful in summer and winter, is a corner of the country that is famous for its cold and the sincerity of the people.
Also a big thanks to Cheltikov Hotel staff who welcomed and hosted me so well with a smiling face. The hospitality of the east is something so precious and valuable that I am deeply sad to leave this place.

???????? What is life like in other parts of the world? To find answers and meet locals, we drove to the furthest, forgotten parts of Turkey's east.
In this Eastern Turkey travel vlog, we spent an amazing day in Kilittaşı Village in Kars Province, an ancient settlement located right on the Turkish - Armenian border. (Literally a couple of meters way from the Armenian soil)
We met a hospitable Kurdish family and they showed us that Anatolian hospitality has no limits. They prepared amazing food for us and we talked for hours about the village life and how it is to live only a couple of meters from Armenia. I don't remember when was the last time I had that much Turkish tea.

Recorded on July 3rd, 2019 at an early time right after the cows returned for morning milking. Kıraç belongs to Arpaçay district of the Kars Province and very close to the Armenian border. It is one of the places where the village life still continues.

???????? Ruins of Ani, Medieval Town at the Turkey-Armenia Border #ruinsofani
Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this ancient medieval city lies right at the border between Turkey and Armenia, right across the Akhurian River. As one drives towards the city from Kars, it is possible to see Mt. Ararat on clear days. Since it was in the border zone of Turkey and the Soviet Union until the 90s, it was not allowed to visit the site and the city until a decade ago or so. Once it is opened to the public, more and more people have been going and the site shows the remains of once a great city. As one strolls around the city, right beyond the river lies Armenia. There are watch towers on the Armenian side but you cannot see any activity or people around.
The city is also known as the city of 1001 churches and according to sources, was founded more than 1600 years ago. It was situated on several trade routes and subsequently it became a walled city of more than 100K residents by the 11th century. It was conquered many times by Byzantine emperors, Ottomans, Armenians, Georgians and Russians. It served as the capital for the Bagratid dynasty. By the 1300s, Ani was already in a steep decline and it was abandoned by the 1700s and never reached to its once peak times after that.

Tam 6 ay sonra yeniden Ani antik kenti çevresindeyiz. Ancak bu defa kentin bilinmeyen yerlerine, daha önce görüntüleri hiç yayınlanmamış noktalarını ziyaret ettik. Ermenistan sınırının sıfır noktasında Kars’ın Kapadokyası diyebileceğimiz muhteşem oluşumlar ve geçmişte yaşayan insanların izlerini keşfediyoruz. Maceramıza siz de ortak olun ve bu güzellikleri yaşayın.
Anadolu’da yaşayan insanlar bu bölgede çokça dini yapı inşa etmişler. Kiliseler, katedraller ve yaşamak için mağaralar. Hepsi de bu günlere ulaşan bir kültürel miraz. Öyle ki bu böyle ülkemizde 19 adet bulunan Unesco dünya mirası listesinde yer alıyor.

Hiking to FORBIDDEN CHURCH on Turkey’s Edge (Armenia Border) ????????
???????? Ani… Ruins of a vast medieval Armenian city scattered on the Turkey-Armenia border in Kars Province. Often called the “City of 1001 Churches”, Ani had been one of the most important hubs of the ancient world, but now, it is a deserted ghost town in Turkey’s far east.
In this Eastern Turkey travel vlog, we will hike up to the 13th-century Kızkale Church (Virgin’s Castle), located in a restricted military zone on Turkey’s farthest point. Visitors to this ancient city are not permitted to see this abandoned church, because it is located on a rocky hill in no man's land, right on the Armenian border. It was a dangerous hike for us to walk through narrow paths, abutting a steep cliff.
In addition, we will have an interesting dialogue near the border with a few shepherds. Also we will hit off the beaten path and explore some of the rock-cut caves in Ani and pay a quick visit to the Cathedral of Ani.
Continuing our roadtrip to the remote lands of Turkey.

Anı is a ruined and uninhabited medieval city-site situated in the Turkish province of Kars, beside the border with Armenia. It was once the capital of a medieval Armenian kingdom that covered much of present day Armenia and eastern Turkey. The city is located on a triangular site, visually dramatic and naturally defensive, protected on its eastern side by the ravine of the Akhurian River (Turkish: Arpaçay) and on its western side by the Bostanlar or Tzaghkotzadzor valley. The Akhurian is a branch of the Aras River and forms part of the current border between Turkey and Armenia. Called the City of 1001 Churches, it stood on various trade routes and its many religious buildings, palaces, and fortifications were amongst the most technically and artistically advanced structures in the world.
At the height of its glory, Anı had a population of 100,000 - 200,000 people and was the rival of Constantinople, Baghdad and Cairo. Long ago renowned for its splendor and magnificence, Anı has been abandoned and largely forgotten for centuries.

Horse-drawn sleighs gaining popularity in Turkey’s Kars

Tourists to the eastern Anatolian region of Kars ride sleighs on Çıldır Lake, the second biggest lake in the region. The surface of the lake is frozen into ice during winter months.
The Eastern Express has recently become a highly popular mode of transportation among local and foreign tourists who visit Çıldır Lake. The lake is 1,959 meters above sea level and covers an area of 123 square kilometres. It is located between the Turkish provinces of Kars and Ardahan.
Ozan Karataş, who guides the guests on horse-drawn sleighs on the lake, said they put their horses in vehicles and leave their house at 8 a.m. in the morning.
“We arrive at the lake an hour after leaving the house. We tie our horses to sleighs in front of a log cabin, built on the shores of Arpaçay Lake. Then we take the guests on tours on the ice-covered lake until 5 p.m.,” said Karataş.
“The tourists especially visit the Ani ruins and Çıldır Lake. This lake is worth seeing. I want everyone to come and see it,” he said. Karataş said more people have begun travelling to Kars with the Eastern Express.
“We make people happy on this lake and earn our living here,” said Karataş, adding that people touring the lake in horse-drawn sleighs become very excited.
Another sleigh driver, Turgay Karataş, said they try to make tourists happy on the lake. “When Çıldır Lake freezes, we earn money. We are here for the daily tourists. There is ice, sun and nice weather all at this lake. Thanks to the Eastern Express, we have lots of customers,” he said.
Speaking to state-run Anadolu Agency, Narin Bakran, a local tourist, said they had come from İzmir to see Kars. “We toured the lake on horse-drawn sleighs, it was very fun. Kars is such a beautiful and fantastic place, which we had never known of,” said Bakran.
Ege İpekçi said they came to Çıldır after visiting the Sarıkamış district and the ancient city of Ani. “Kars has a very big tourism potential, it is like heaven,” İpekçi said.
Tourists arriving in Kars with the Eastern Express also visit the Cıbıltepe and Sarıkamış ski centres, as well as the ancient city of Ani.
