Arnedo, Arab Roots in Spain, Castle of Arnedo, 4K

Arab Roots in Spain, Castle of Arnedo: 4K
Scary, beautiful panoramic views. Gopro

Arnedo is the third largest town in La Rioja, Spain. It is located near Calahorra, and has a population of about 15,000 people.
Its economy is based on the shoe industry.

The area of Arnedo has been inhabited as early as the Neolithic Age. In pre-Roman times it was known as Sadacia or Sidacia, while the current name derives from the Latin Arenetum (Place of sand); the Romans, who arrived here in the 2nd century BC replacing the Celtiberians, built here a fortification to defend the hill, which commanded an important communication hub. Of the Visigothic Age are remains of a 6th-century cave-church.

The Moors conquered Arnedo in the 8th century AD and made it the capital of one of the 26 provinces in which they divided Iberia. The town was conquered by the Christian king Sancho I of Pamplona in 908-909.

Places to see in ( La Rioja - Spain ) Briones

Places to see in ( La Rioja - Spain ) Briones

Briones is a village in the province and autonomous community of La Rioja, Spain. The municipality covers an area of 37.72 square kilometres (14.56 sq mi) and as of 2011 had a population of 873 people. The name Briones comes from the Berones, ancient inhabitants of La Rioja, but, according to a lithic site from the Bronze Age found in the path of the Santos Mártires chapel, Briones had inhabitants before the Beroners. The Albedense Chronicle (c. 883) says that Alfonso I of Asturias cut down the village of Briones and six other municipalities.

Besides, the chronicle also mentions the famous expedition led by Alphonso I, king of Asturias all the way down the Ebro river in 740. In that chronicle, these destroyed villages are mentioned: Mirandam (now Miranda de Ebro), Revedencam, Carbonariam, Abeicam (Ábalos, where the expedition crossed the Ebro river), Brunes (this might be Briones but it is uncertain), Cinissariam (now Cenicero) and Alesanco.

Briones was under Saracen control until the late 9th century, and it belonged to King Ordoño II of León since the beginnings of the 10th century. Briones also belonged to the Castilla County, which had been repopulated with Basques and was a frontier between Castilla and Navarra. After Sancho el de Peñalén was murdered the 4th of June 1076, Alfonso VI took over La Rioja and Briones became part of the Haro's Signiory.

Fernando III named Don Diego López III de Haro, the monarch's nephew, first Lord of Briones. In 1240 Don Diego López rebelled against Fernando III and found shelter in Briones. The king enclosed the town and made him prisoner. Since then, Briones belonged to the crown. On the 18 January 1256, Alfonso X of Castile gave Briones the regional laws from Vitoria, as a guarantee of the Castillian repopulation. In 1293 Sancho IV gave Briones royal privilege. During the Basquisation in 1536 there were thirty Basque surnames in Briones.

Patones de Arriba - Ancient Hidden Village in Spain

The residents of Patones de Arriba converted crumbling Roman ruins into a delightful destination, just a1 hour and 7 min drive from the center of Madrid. Tucked away in the Sierra Norte de Madrid, you will find an ancient village. The cobbled stoned streets and slate houses will take you back in time to a place where the earliest records from 1555 boast just 7 inhabitants.

Patones takes its name from its first known settlers, the Paton Family, but before they claimed the land, Romans settled here. People had been living in the caves throughout the surrounding hills.
Because of the construction method know as Drystone, which involves stacking stones on top of each other without mortar, many of the homes are no long standing, but you can still see their foundations.

The 9810 meter Cave of Regierillo is the most important archaeological site in the community of Madrid. Excavations performed during the 70s led to the discovery of remains of cave bears that became extinct 24,000 years ago. Most importantly are the numerous artifacts that have been discovered. The caves are no longer accessible to the public due to being vandalized with graffiti and trashed.

Throughout the years, Patones de Arriba's population dwindled and its inhabitants left and began to settle in the plains thus creating the town, appropriately named, Patones de Abajo. In 1999, however, Patones de Arriba was declared an asset of cultural interest and tourism and the town begin to be restored and grow again.

This quaint quite little town, once ruled by its own King, is now filled with unique shops, cafes, and restaurants where people come explore and relax. Visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, streams, towns, and plains, by hiking, biking, and jogging up and down the mountain trails. The area around Patones is a major Catchment zone with extensive reservoirs and pump stations.
