This lesser-visited Spanish village dramatically sits on top of a rocky limestone ridge, its whitewashed houses and stone castle walls stop abruptly as a sheer cliff face plunges down to the river Guadalete 150 meters below.

Arcos de la Frontera, Cádiz, Andalusia, Spain, Europe
Arcos de la Frontera is a town in the province of Cádiz in southern Spain. It is located on the eastern bank of the Guadalete river, which flows to the Bay of Cadiz. The town commands a fine vista atop a sandstone ridge, from which the peak of San Cristobal and the Guadalete Valley can be seen. The town gained its name by being the frontier of Spain's 13th century battle with the Moors. There is local evidence that Stone Age cave-dwellers used rocks to form living chambers. Roman ruins also exist in the area. Arcos became an independent Moorish taifa in 1011 during the protracted collapse of the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba. Arcos was associated with the Jerez by 'Abdun ibn Muhammad who ruled from c. 1029/1030 to 1053. The region was overtaken by the Almoravid dynasty in 1091. From 1145 to 1147 the region of Arcos and Jerez was briefly a taifa under dependency of Granada, led by Abu'l-Qasim Ahyal. The town was a bulwark of Christianity after Alfonso the Wise of Castile (1252–1284) expelled the Moors. He constructed a Gothic cathedral which remains on its high ridge. It is famed for its ten bells, which tolled throughout the war with the Moors. Several Moorish banners were taken in the nearby battle of Zahara and have been on display in a church in Arcos since 1483.

Jerez de la Frontera, usually called Jerez, is a city in southern Spain's Andalusia region. Its old quarter surrounds the Alcázar de Jerez, a Moorish fortress founded in the 11th century.
The Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is a famed riding school with horse shows and a carriage museum. The city is also known for flamenco music and sherry production in the so-called Sherry Triangle lying to the west.

Feeling a little bit homesick, we fled to the countryside of Spain for some rest and relaxation. We bunked up on top of a cliff-side castle-top village. Our apartment was absolutely incredible. Check out our favourites below for more info. It was the best rooftop view in town, friendliest hosts and prime location. Sometimes the antidote to feeling home sick while living the nomad life is to simply return to familiar rituals of routine, make new friends, take a deep breathe and slow down. We're headed to Ronda, Spain up next. Come travel with us!

Our trip to Arcos de la Frontera, Spain!
Arcos was a fun little town that we got to go explore. We got there during siesta so a lot of places were closed but that’s okay, we walked around and wandered the streets until things started to open back up around 5pm. We got cookies from the nuns (they were so good!) Went inside the church (The Basilica de Santa Maria de la Asunción) and even got to climb 120 stairs to the top and have an amazing view of the city. The church was built in the 15-16th century and was beautiful!
We plan on going back because a few places we wanted to go we’re closed and there’s a lot more we want to explore here.♥️

En mi caso me quedé en el Alojamiento Rural Buenavista, a solo 5km del centro del pueblo, en una zona tranquila y en plena naturaleza. Está todo muy nuevo y con todas las comodidades. La casa está totalmente equipada de todo. La atención y el trato al cliente es espectacular. Sin duda alguna ¡¡todo un acierto!!????????

Arcos es un pueblo con muchísima restauración, comas donde comas ¡¡estará de lujo!! pero en nuestro caso lo hicimos en el Restaurante el Nuevo Faro, donde comimos estupendamente bien y con unos platos muy muy elaborados. ¡¡Está realmente delicioso!! ¡¡Os lo recomiendo 100%!!
