Jericó and Pueblorrico, Colombia ????????
Two smaller towns in the Colombian Mountains and coffee country that don't get the attention they deserve.
After a long bumpy chiva bus ride we got to Jerico where we spent a few days and also visited a town nearby called Pueblorrico. Whilst here we got to go paragliding which was a first for me and definitely worth it the views were incredible over the Colombian countryside.
We chose Nube Extrema in Jericó to take us paragliding, Juan was excellent and we couldn't have chosen anyone better the flight was perfect and he spoke great English! Settled my nerves and made it a day to remember. Can highly recommend them!

Santuario (Risaralda)
Santuario es un municipio del departamento de Risaralda (Colombia), ubicado a 64 km de la capital departamental en la región centro-occidente del departamento, en el lado oriental de la cordillera Occidental.
Limita con los municipios de Pueblo Rico, Apía, La Celia, La Virginia, Belén De Umbría y Balboa y los departamentos de Valle del Cauca, Choco y Caldas.
Cuenta con una población superior a los 15.000 habitantes y en su territorio se encuentra parte del Parque Nacional Natural Tatamá y el Parque Municipal Natural Planes de San Rafael, por esta razón se le conoce como La Perla de Tatamá .Fue fundado por Buenaventura Navarro en la época de la colonia.

This video was made during our 2 weeks May trip for a great USFWS group birding in C & W Andes plus Cauca Valley; landslides made us detour and add some Magdalena Valley birds and specialties that didn't hurt anyone ;-)
Almost ~550 species in two weeks!

Basically, the main difference of this trip with any other company ones is that we got AMAZING views of Hooded Antpitta! - for almost a complete minute a neat Grallaricula cucullata was perched some ~10m from us giving us the very best show possible!.... check the shots inside the Flickr set/album!

After breakfast and waiting for the rain to stop at Agualinda - Apia, W Andes
While we waited for the rain to ease, at Agualinda Park in Apia, the house kept is every-morning works looking forward feeding everyone in the family. Julian showed some of the local guys some bird shots, and the gringos were eagerly talking about conservation in the Neotropics... LOVELY scene!!

Near-endemic Yellow-headed Manakin (Xenopipo flavicapilla)
What should I say...?.... this is a mega-rare manakin, confined to the wet forest in the Andean mountains of Colombia and Ecuador ( ); it is not been any recent records in Ecuador that I know and in Colombia only a handful in the last 10 years. I have to say that every time increases the number of sightings and localities where this little chap is found!!; so now we are preparing a paper on Natural History of this bird containing the first nest description, all novel data on breeding, breaking-news info on its vocalizations, some really cool info on lek? breeding behavior!!, plus new localities for C, W & E Andes...
There is a couple of places in the Andes where this species seem to be common and reliable to go and look for it: traditionally, La Romera Reserve in Sabaneta, Antioquia, only 30 minutes from Medellin city in the Central Andes; at this place, I made all these videos and photographs yesterday when a very very obliging and cooperative bird perched near me several times. The other site, newer, is in the W Andes and I already have some photos and videos uploaded from that site... I will be exploring more and more that other site while our COLOMBIA Birding tours as more than one endemic and cool especialty is in that site!
