Amble is a town, civil parish and seaport on the North Sea coast of Northumberland, England. It lies at the mouth of the River Coquet, and the nearby Coquet Island is visible from its beaches and harbour. The civil parish is called Amble by the Sea .
Amble grew in the nineteenth century as collieries were opened; and the newly built railway links to the Northumberland coalfields made the town a centre for the sea transport and export of coal. Prior to the development of the harbour, the town was little more than a hamlet, according to the architectural guides originally compiled by Nikolaus Pevsner. The principal local mineworkings were those at Broomhill and at Radcliffe. The harbour at Amble was the smallest of those that served the coalfields of Northumberland and Durham. It was originally under the control of the Dukes of Northumberland until, in 1837, a port authority – the Warkworth Harbour Commission – was created to supervise improvements.
The Pevsner guide of 1992 says that Today Amble is a not unpleasant small town but has few buildings of distinction. Of those, he records the church of St Cuthbert, which was originally constructed in 1870 and expanded in 1929, and its associated 1876-built vicarage. In addition, he notes some early Victorian terraces on Queen Street and North Street.
Amble is situated on the A1068 that runs along the north-eastern coastline. This road is the old corn trading road which runs from Hexham in south west Northumberland through Cramlington, Bedlington, Guide Post, Ashington and Ellington. The road continues through more open coastal areas towards Amble and continues approximately 6 miles (10 km) to the north to Alnmouth, then winds on to Alnwick. Amble also lies near to the A1, providing easy access to nearest city Newcastle upon Tyne (30 miles (48 km) south), Gateshead (30 miles (48 km) south) and to the Scottish capital Edinburgh (80 miles (130 km) north).
Representations were made in 2006 for Amble to be included in the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which ends at the pier. The town is also adjacent to nature reserves operated by Northumberland Wildlife Trust at Cresswell, Druridge and Hauxley. The town has a caravan park, as well as guest houses and bed and breakfast accommodation for visitors. The Braid, which forms a part of the harbour, is now a greenfield site with a modern marina.

Amble, England | A Picturesque Town in the UK
Amble is a town on the North Sea coast of Northumberland, England, at the mouth of the River Coquet; Coquet Island is visible from its beaches and harbour. In 2011, it had a population of 6,025.
Amble prides itself on being the ‘friendliest port in England’, and its annual puffin festival, brightly coloured beach huts and the wooden retail pods of Amble Harbour Village are just a few of its quirks.
A walk through the clinking halyard of Amble’s award-winning marina will take you to the harbour’s wooden pods, which sell everything from cheese to charm bracelets, as well as its sea-front pathway where sweet treats and salty fish and chips are en-route. The Northumberland Seafood Centre located at the Amble Harbour Village sources and sells local seafood. They also have a lobster hatchery with an interactive and informative visitor centre.
Boutique ice cream makers and Golden Fork winner for best speciality food, Spurelli sits on the waterfront, along with exquisite seafood restaurant The Old Boathouse. The Fish Shack is another of the harbour’s highlights, where you can savour fresh fish in a rustic wooden hut beneath a fish net and fairy light-strewn ceiling.
Watersports enthusiasts should head for the Coquet Shorebase Trust, which offers a cascade of aquatic fun, from sailing and kayaking to power boating and raft building. Clockwatching isn’t something we would usually recommend, but a time check with the Amble Sundial against the largest gnomon or indicator in Europe is not to be missed.
Adorably clumsy puffins, lolloping seals and an array of other seabirds dwell on Amble’s coastline and the Puffin Cruise that sails from Amble harbour is not to be missed. Hop on board to spot the 36,000-bird colony nesting on Coquet Island, an RSPB seabird sanctuary a mile off the coast.
Head into Amble’s small town centre for a High Street crammed with cosy cafes, restaurants and traditional pubs perfect for tasting local tipples. The mouth-watering scent of the local butchers can be enjoyed as you wander along the highstreet, as well as the sweet smell of sticky pastries from the bakers. Amble shops are perfect for finding that local Northumbrian gift to take home for a friend or a keepsake of your stay in Northumberland.
Lace up your walking shoes to enjoy a walk (Approximately 6 mile circular walk) from Amble to Warkworth and visit Warkworth Castle and Hermitage, once home to the Percy family who also owned nearby Alnwick Castle. The fascinating cross shaped keep first built over 600 years ago remains largely intact.
If you are travelling to Amble by car there are several car parks making parking in Amble easy. For visiting Amble Harbour village head to the car park on Turner Street. For a car free day Arriva buses operate regular services to and from Amble.

1. Bamburgh Castle - 0:39
Having a history dating back to the year 547, this castle is pretty breathtaking! Epic views from the ramparts and being beautifully renovated by William Armstrong make Bamburgh castle a great place to explore
2. Dunstanburgh Castle - 1:54
Located only 9 miles south of Bamburgh castle, this castle was much less fortunate and is left in ruins today, but the setting is no less epic. there is a 1-mile coastal walk from the town of Craster to access this castle as there is no parking nearby.
3/4/5. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne - 2:39
Lindisfarne Island is packed with things to do but is only accessible at low tide due to the causeway being submerged and the island getting cut off from the mainland. Firstly you can visit Lindisfarne Castle (3:09), you can also see the Boatsheds made from upturned boat hulls, walk along the coastline to the Holy Island War Memorial, explore Lindisfarne Priory, and if it's low tide walk out to St. Cuthberts Island (4:07). we visited Lindisfarne in the evening and it's a great place to catch a sunset.
6. Hadrians Wall - 4:50
Dating all the way back to 122 AD, built by the Roman emperor Hadrian, this wall is 73 miles long and stretches the whole breadth of England. we hiked a 3-mile stretch from Steel Rigg Car Park, Vis Sycamore Gap to Housesteads Roman Fort. Sycamore Gap is the most photographed tree in England and Housesteads fort is the most well preserved roman for on Hadrian's wall! this 3-mile stretch goes through Northumberland National Park and is a great hike!
7. Cragside - 6:10
Our favourite thing to do in Northumberland, Cragside is the first house in the world to be powered by hydroelectricity. As well as this there are so many grounds full of picture-perfect, straight out of a fantasy film scenery that you can explore to your heart's content. Definitely, a must-visit on your holiday in Northumberland!
8. Alnwick - 7:43
home to the famous Alnwick Castle, famous for its many uses as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films. But the town of Alnwick is a great place in itself, make sure you head down to Barter Books, a second-hand bookstore housed in the old Victorian railway station of Alnwick!
9. Newcastle upon Tyne - 8:24
Technically not in the county of Northumberland but Newcastle was the place we stayed during our trip to Northumberland, full of some really interesting architecture and great nightlife!
10. The Angel of The North - 8:47
Located in Gateshead just south of Newcastle, this statue was designed by Antony Gormley in 1998 and is considered an icon of England! Overlooking the A1 and a great place to relax and watch the sunset!

We need to say more about the cozy seaside ports and those grand medieval settlements. British cities are generally charming, beautiful, and awesome. In these cities, there’s something for everyone. If you see those cities saturated with history and local charisma from distance, it can be humbling. However, it can sometimes be best to appreciate those cities by stepping back and viewing them from a vantage viewpoint. This video about the 10 most beautiful cities in the UK presents another opportunity to analyze the UK cities. However, it’s tough to can conduct a generally acceptable ranking of the cities United Kingdom cities.
10. Cardiff, Wales
Cardiff represents more than just the seat of government of Wales. This capital city is an expression of the potential of a big city to retain its natural beauty. Hence, it has to be mentioned as early as now in this account. The attraction of this town started during the Industrial Revolution when it was a humble worldwide port of coal.

Alnwick, England | Walking Tour of A small English Town | Dreamy Destinations UK
Alnwick District is situated in the Heart Of Northumberland in North East England, with the Alnwick Castle taking pride of place in the town of Alnwick. Under the Normans and for some time after the town was the administrative town for the whole county of Northumberland. Today the district of Alnwick stretches from the North Sea Coast between Low Newton – Amble and south west to Elsdon near Otterburn and taking in about one 3rd of the Northumberland National Park.
The town is on the south bank of the River Aln, 32 miles (51 km) south of Berwick-upon-Tweed and the Scottish border, 5 miles (8 km) inland from the North Sea at Alnmouth and 34 miles (55 km) north of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The town dates to about AD 600 and thrived as an agricultural centre. Alnwick Castle was the home of the most powerful medieval northern baronial family, the Earls of Northumberland. It was a staging post on the Great North Road between Edinburgh and London. The town centre has changed relatively little, but the town has seen some growth, with several housing estates covering what had been pasture and new factory and trading estate developments along the roads to the south.

Buttermere Amble, AVOIDING the crowds! - A circular walk of Buttermere, Lake District, England
A 7K circular walk around Buttermere, avoiding the crowds!
We begin near the Bridge Hotel and I provide insight of the free bus. Taking the path towards Scale Force, we avoid the main path leading to the lake which many tourist use. However, when we get to Buttermere Dubs we cross the bridge of Scale Bridge, and then turn left to follow the river Buttermere Dubs.
Eventually, we will cross of the stream of Sourmilk Gill which lands at out feet from the waterfall which we admire fo some time. We then continue on this path away from the crowds on a higher plane so that we can see extensive views. This path is actually in a wooded area which is mainly pine. The trees leave us about half way down the west side of the lake as we are journeying in an anti clockwise direction. As we go through the gate of the forest are eyes enjoy the feast of the picture that is Buttermere in it's stillness.
We follow the path to the side of the lake where we witness cattle bathing in the lake. The we continue admiring Fleetwith Pike and Haystacks mountains. Next we go over Peggy's Bridge following the path to Gatesgarth Farm where we collect a luxury lakeland ice cream. Having refreshed ourselves we head along the east side of the lake and go through the tunnel. Eventually, we emerge from the tunnel and continue our journey to the north shore which is where we complete our journey.
This walk is mainly flat but does contain a couple of rocky places near the tunnel, these are shown in the video to demonstrate the near for adequate shoes at this point. Whilst I will always recommend a map for even the shortest of walks, you should only need your map for reassurance, the path is clearly visible all the way around the lake.

Walking Tour of a Picturesque English Town | Amble, England
Amble is a town on the North Sea coast of Northumberland, England, at the mouth of the River Coquet; Coquet Island is visible from its beaches and harbour. In 2011, it had a population of 6,025.
Amble prides itself on being the ‘friendliest port in England’, and its annual puffin festival, brightly coloured beach huts and the wooden retail pods of Amble Harbour Village are just a few of its quirks.
A walk through the clinking halyard of Amble’s award-winning marina will take you to the harbour’s wooden pods, which sell everything from cheese to charm bracelets, as well as its sea-front pathway where sweet treats and salty fish and chips are en-route. The Northumberland Seafood Centre located at the Amble Harbour Village sources and sells local seafood. They also have a lobster hatchery with an interactive and informative visitor centre.
Boutique ice cream makers and Golden Fork winner for best speciality food, Spurelli sits on the waterfront, along with exquisite seafood restaurant The Old Boathouse. The Fish Shack is another of the harbour’s highlights, where you can savour fresh fish in a rustic wooden hut beneath a fish net and fairy light-strewn ceiling.
Watersports enthusiasts should head for the Coquet Shorebase Trust, which offers a cascade of aquatic fun, from sailing and kayaking to power boating and raft building. Clockwatching isn’t something we would usually recommend, but a time check with the Amble Sundial against the largest gnomon or indicator in Europe is not to be missed.
Adorably clumsy puffins, lolloping seals and an array of other seabirds dwell on Amble’s coastline and the Puffin Cruise that sails from Amble harbour is not to be missed. Hop on board to spot the 36,000-bird colony nesting on Coquet Island, an RSPB seabird sanctuary a mile off the coast.
Head into Amble’s small town centre for a High Street crammed with cosy cafes, restaurants and traditional pubs perfect for tasting local tipples. The mouth-watering scent of the local butchers can be enjoyed as you wander along the highstreet, as well as the sweet smell of sticky pastries from the bakers. Amble shops are perfect for finding that local Northumbrian gift to take home for a friend or a keepsake of your stay in Northumberland.
Lace up your walking shoes to enjoy a walk (Approximately 6 mile circular walk) from Amble to Warkworth and visit Warkworth Castle and Hermitage, once home to the Percy family who also owned nearby Alnwick Castle. The fascinating cross shaped keep first built over 600 years ago remains largely intact.
If you are travelling to Amble by car there are several car parks making parking in Amble easy. For visiting Amble Harbour village head to the car park on Turner Street. For a car free day Arriva buses operate regular services to and from Amble.

Walk around Amble & Warkworth Castle, Northumberland - great day & place to visit in your campervan
Lovely visit to Amble and Warkworth Castle in Northumberland. Great to visit in your campervan or motorhome.
There are a couple of good places to park all be it no overnight camping signs in the parking places that we spotted. There are a number of nearby campsites however so the parking places are good for day visits.
There are a number of things to see and do in Amble, some of which we look at in the video.
Most of Amble is dog friendly, however worth checking with the specific venue. Also worth noting that dogs aren't allowed on the main beach near the harbour between May and September.

History
Various urns, cists, flint spearheads and other evidence of ancient burials were found near to Amble in the 1880s and 1890s. Some of those remains showed signs of cremation.
Outcrops of coal had been found along the coastline between the River Coquet and the River Tyne at least as long ago as the reign of Elizabeth I, when unsuccessful attempts had been made to extract and transport it in an economic manner. A failed proposal to use Amble as a port for the shipment of locally sourced coal and salt is recorded in 1618, although this failure did not discourage William Hewitt[a] from making the then rare decision to reserve for himself the rights to the coal when he sold the townships of Amble and Hauxley in 1630. A significant factor in the failure of all the early attempts, when compared to the success of ventures in the valleys of the Tyne and the Wear, was that of economies of scale. Those more successful areas at that time had plentiful easily accessed reserves which encouraged investment and the sharing of fixed costs such as harbour facilities, buildings and machinery among a large number of enterprises.
The early situation changed as the operators in the valleys exhausted the cheaply extracted ores and found themselves having to mine deeper and also further away from the rivers that were used for transport, thus increasing their costs per unit of coal mined. Some coal was probably being shipped from previously uneconomic places such Amble and Blyth by the end of the seventeenth century, and it was certainly being extracted at Amble by that time.
Amble grew in the nineteenth century as collieries were opened; and the newly built railway links to the Northumberland coalfields made the town a centre for the sea transport and export of coal. Prior to the development of the harbour, the town was little more than a hamlet, according to the architectural guides originally compiled by Nikolaus Pevsner. The principal local mineworkings were those at Broomhill and at Radcliffe.
The harbour at Amble was the smallest of those that served the coalfields of Northumberland and Durham. It was originally under the control of the Dukes of Northumberland until, in 1837, a port authority – the Warkworth Harbour Commission – was created to supervise improvements. Following consultations with various engineers, the proposals submitted by John Rennie in 1838 were accepted. These included the construction of breakwaters to the north and the south, which were eventually completed in 1849 at a total cost of £116,000. The larger northern breakwater, which was originally 2,300 feet (700 m) in length, was extended in the early part of the 20th century but suffered from the undermining effects of the tide and required shoring with slag brought in from the ironworks of Hartlepool and Middlesbrough.
The construction of docks had also been mooted in 1844 and 1850 but the arrival of the railway led instead to the construction of coal staithes. A change in consulting engineer in 1869 resulted in extensive dredging of the harbour but did not greatly improve the prospects of the port.[c] Shipments of coal amounted to over 500,000 tons by 1914 but this was a modest volume when compared to the other regional ports. Robert Rennison notes with regard to the relative lack of prosperity that the port served a small and discrete coalfield.
The 5.75-mile (9.25 km) railway branched on a single track to Amble at a point near to Chevington and was opened in September 1849 by the York, Newcastle and Berwick Railway, initially as a freight-only line. Passenger services between Amble and Chevington began in 1879, following the construction of a station at Broomhill in 1878 and facilities at Amble itself. The line between Amble and Broomhill was double-track. The passenger service ended in July 1930 and the general freight service was withdrawn in 1964. Coal traffic, which had amounted to around 750,000 tons annually in the 1920s, came to an end in 1969 when the line was closed completely.
Other industries, such as sea fishing and both ship building and repair in an area known as the Braid had expanded with the growth of the town. Traditional Northumbrian fishing vessels such as cobles had previously sheltered in the natural harbour for centuries.[citation needed] One local coble manufacturing business, J. & J. Harrison, founded in 1870, had been the first to introduce engines to the form and was still producing it in 1973, along with more generally utilised craft.
