The city is known for the Palmeral de Elche, that is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the only palm grove in Europe with North African origins and the largest on the continent. The Palm Grove also constitutes the northernmost and one of the largest palm groves in the world.Today, the city of Elche contains 97 orchards composed of 70,000 date palms, concentrated in the east bank of the Vinalopó.

Considered the capital of footwear, Elche has a long tradition of shoemaking, which has turned it into the largest producer in Spain and a benchmark all around the world, so the shoe lovers will find in the city a place to indulge. In addition, shopping enthusiasts can enjoy the best companies and brands in various commercial areas of Elche, as the one located in the historical centre, its fantastic outlet route and its two large shopping centres.

Palmeral of Elche
The Palmeral of Elche, a landscape of groves of date palms, was formally laid out, with elaborate irrigation systems, at the time the Muslim city of Elche was erected, towards the end of the tenth century A.C., when much of the Iberian peninsula was Arab. The Palmeral is an oasis, a system for agrarian production in arid areas. It is also a unique example of Arab agricultural practices on the European continent. Cultivation of date palms in Elche is known at least since the Iberian times, dating around the fifth century B.C.

Huerto del Cura (Jardín Huerto del Cura)
Huerto del Cura, the jewel of Elche’s historic palm grove, the Palmeral. We invite you to stroll along the paths of the Huerto in peace, enjoying the coexistence of Mediterranean and tropical plants, in the silence of this haven in the centre of the city. Enjoy the light and its reflection in the numerous ponds where fish and birds accompany the palm trees in their daily siesta.
The Huerto del Cura Garden was declared a National Artistic Garden in 1943.
Has an area of 12,000 m2. Inside it is harmoniously housed a wide range of Mediterranean and tropical plants arranged to create an atmosphere of tranquillity and repose. The palm trees, the true protagonists of the garden, lend it its distnctive aspect.
A splendid collections of palms and cacti from all corners of the world, with many varieties which have been adapted to our climate, may also be enjoyed. In addition to the palm trees, many other Spanish Mediterranean plants, such as lemon, orange, pomegranate, carob and jujube trees are cultivated in the Huerto del Cura, alongside others from subtropical climes which have, over time, been added to from beautiful collection of plants from exotic places.

Do you know the meaning of the saying, ‘Pa’lante, como los de Alicante’? If you’re from the English-speaking world, then maybe not. But you should! It means ‘Forward, like the people of Alicante’. In Spain, this popular saying defines the people of Alicante by their drive, determination and spirit. Historically, this port city on the Costa Blanca has faced many struggles - be they due to war or economic troubles - but the people of Alicante have persevered, with their heads held high, and pressed forward.

The late 1950s and 60s were a transformative time for the city. The growth of global tourism drove holidaymakers to locations like Alicante, which enjoyed beautiful climates year-round. The local economy benefited greatly from well-funded construction projects such as hotels and complexes that accompanied this increase in tourism, and in turn, the extra visitors drove an increase in the number of wonderful restaurants, bars and cafés Alicante has to offer.

At the heart of Alicante is an energy - a culture and identity that has persevered through the growth of the tourism here. The idyllic and instagrammable paved streets of the Barrio de Santa Cruz lead you on a path around the mountain at the centre of the city, Monte Benacantil, and the ancient walls of the Castillo de Santa Barbara on its peak. The castle is visible from everywhere in the city, whether you’re soaking up some sun at the beach, or shopping for fresh local produce in Alicante’s Mercado Central.

With neighbors like the infamous Benidorm, I had a few assumptions about the nature of tourism in the city, and I couldn’t have been more wrong. The real, authentic Alicante is here and waiting for you, and I could feel it from the moment we landed.

The city of Alicante is around 1,260 miles from London. To get there, we chose the way you’ll also most likely be using, which is to fly! We flew from Gatwick airport, so to start our trip in style, we booked ourselves into the Number 1 Lounge. Unlimited food and drink was a nice way to enjoy the free WiFi, which was perfect for some extra last-minute research and filling our Netflix downloads for the plane. If you fancy starting your holiday like a VIP, you can use the Holiday Extras app to book yours.

Alicante has its own airport, so getting in is easy. A flight from Gatwick to Alicante takes only around 2.5 hours. Then, the airport is just a 20 minute drive away from the town centre. Our recommendation? Book yourself a private transfer or taxi. The door to door service is the most hassle-free option. Alternatively, you can take the C6 bus from Alicante Airport into the city, which arrives every 20 minutes throughout the daytime or once an hour between midnight and 5am, and takes just 20 minutes.

We wanted to soak in as much of the Alicante experience as we could, so we’re doing most of our exploring by foot. Many of the best sights in Alicante are all within walking distance of one another. We used Google Maps to plan our routes. Perfect if you’re planning on doing a lot of walking, but it’ll also show you your public transport options too, so you’ll know if you could save time by opting to catch a tram instead.

Alicante is full of energy, so it’s no surprise that this city attracts party people, stag do’s and hen nights. But if you know where to look, it can also be serene, idyllic and a history lover’s paradise… if you know where to look.

So on our first morning in Alicante, we made our way over to the Castillo de Santa Barbara to get the best views over Alicante. On our way there, we passed the Playa del Postiguet, or Postiguet Beach, and naturally, had to stop to enjoy it.

Almoradi is a small inland town located on the southern Costa Blanca with its nearest beach resort being Guardamar del Segura a mere ten-minute drive away. It’s much quieter than its coastal neighbours but has become increasingly popular with foreign property buyers seeking the more authentic Spain. Almoradi is famous for its furniture shops and is a regular Spanish town in that sense that it has banks, butchers, pharmacies, doctors, dentists, vets, gyms, and bakeries etc which are open all year round and not just during the summer months when tourists make Almoradi their home. The nearest beach resort would be Guardamar del Segura, with the major tourist resort of Torrevieja just to the south. Other beach resorts within easy access to Almoradi include La Marina, La Zenia, Cabo Roig, Punta Prima and Playa Flamenca. Almoradi will appeal to tourists wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the coast. Almoradi is a quieter escape where you can still enjoy a genuine Spanish way of life complete with the traditional siestas, fiestas and restaurants serving Spanish foods.

Welcome to Hansson & Hertzell and the healthiest country in the world!

The best places of Guardamar

Guardamar del Segura or briefly Guardamar is a municipality of the province of Alicante located at the mouth of the river Segura in southern Valencia (autonomous community), Spain. It is a Mediterranean resort, with a large pine forest abutting an 11-km-long white sand beach.

Historically an area of fishermen and farmers, Guardamar del Segura is the southernmost point where Valenciano (a dialect of Catalan) is spoken. A Phoenician colony, called Herna by Roman geographer Avienus in his book Ora Maritima was the first settlement near the mouth of Segura river, In Spanish, guardar means safekeeping and mar means sea, and this is another possible basis for its current name.

It is difficult to imagine more idyllic views amongst cliffs and beaches, amongst forest and sea, than that of Teulada. This must also have been true to the Berber pirates that continuously pestered these lands.

The series titled “Alicante pueblo a pueblo/Alacant poble a poble,” produced by the Image and Promotion Area of Great Government, has the objective of bringing awareness to each of the Alicante localities in an attractive or intimate form, reflecting their landscape, historic, cultural and urbanistic particularities.
