Seit Dezember 2022 sind wir auf unserer Spanien- Reise. Auf verschiedenen Stellplätzen und Campingplätzen haben wir uns länger aufgehalten. Jetzt wollen wir uns noch einiges anschauen. Dazu gehört auch El Rocio.
Die Wallfahrt El Rocío gehört zu den größten religiösen Festen in Spanien. Jedes Jahr zu Pfingsten reisen über eine Million Pilger in den Wallfahrtsort El Rocío an der Costa de la Luz. El Rocío gehört zur Gemeinde Almonte in der südspanischen Provinz Huelva. Der Ort befindet sich direkt neben dem Nationalpark Coto de Doñana

Almonte es un municipio de la comarca del Condado con tierras de extraordinaria riqueza agrícola y al que pertenece la mayor parte del Parque Nacional de Doñana, declarado Reserva de la Biosfera por la Unesco por ser la más importante reserva ecológica de Europa.
Dentro del término se encuentran la aldea de El Rocío donde se celebra la más famosa romería de España, y Matalascañas, el centro turístico más importante de la provincia.
Además, Almonte posee un amplio patrimonio monumental religioso, civil, industrial y militar.

Almonte Spain has a rich cultural and historical heritage, a city locate in the South of Spain, between Huelva and Sevilla. The main plaza is beutifully decorated to honor the Virgen del Rocio.
A special procession takes place each year where the Virgin is brought from Almonte to the town of Rocio.

EL ROCIO Almonte Huelva Spain 11/11/11 + info.
Dreamt of going here for ages, now I have. Went off-season but still great. Go by bus from Huelva to Almonte and from there to El Rocio. Be careful there are few buses and there seems to be continious changes of schedule without informing. I spent 4 hours waiting to go back with the lovely couple in the last image. I finally had to take a taxi to get back to my last bus leaving from Huelva to El Portillo where I staid .

It is so exceptional, there are no real streets, only sand, I expected Clint Eastwood to appear all the time .This little village is full of wonderful friendly people just wanting you to visit I will soon again !!
The El Rocío pilgrimage is the most famous in the region, attracting nearly a million people from across Andalucia and the entire country, and beyond. Every Andalucian city, town and village has its own pilgrimages, for its patron saint, virgin or other much-loved local figure. But the El Rocio has cult status, and is the most important and most colourful. It follows on from Semana Santa (March/April), and the various spring ferias, of which Seville's Feria de Abril (April) is the biggest.
HISTORY OF EL ROCIO
This cult dates back to the 13th century, when a hunter from the village of Villamanrique (or Almonte, depending on which version of the story you follow) discovered a statue of the Virgin Mary in a tree trunk in the Doñana park. A chapel was built where the tree stood, and it became a place of pilgrimage. Devotion to this particular version of the Virgin was initially a local affair. Then, by the 17th century, hermandades (brotherhoods) were making the trip from nearby towns at Pentecost; by the 19th century, they came from all over Huelva, Cadiz and Seville, on a journey taking up to four days. Over the next century, the cult of the Virgin del Rocio became more and more widespread, and these days participants come from as far away as Barcelona and the Canary Islands - not to mention tourists who travel from abroad, around Europe and even further afield.
The object of the pilgrimage is a 13th-century statue of the Virgen Del Rocio (Virgin of the Dew), in the town of the same name. El Rocio is in Huelva province, in the heart of the Doñana park, between Almonte and the coast. Most pilgrims, known as rocieros, approach the town through the park itself.
The town of El Rocío is a sprawling, pretty Wild-West-style place (you tie your horse to a wooden rail with a sign saying Reservado Caballos - reserved for horses - while you have a drink or a meal), with sandy, unpaved roads (easier on the hooves). For a few days in late May or early June, Catholic hermandades (brotherhoods) and countless others flock from all over Andalucia, Spain, and beyond, to the town, to pay tribute to the Virgin del Roció, housed in her own church in the town.
Until the 1950s the town had only a few houses, and everyone camped in their wagons. Now, each of the 90 or so brotherhoods has its own house with stables, as well as its own chapel, with its name displayed at the front. Its members and their friends and families, and their horses, eat and sleep here during the pilgrimage weekend. People bring mattresses and bed down anywhere they can. There are impromptu parties, open-air masses, horse races and competitions between the hermandades. And lots of singing and dancing, at all hours of the day and night. These brotherhoods also stay at their houses at weekends throughout the year, with their families in tow, making each visit into a big fiesta.
The pilgrimage takes place over the weekend before Pentecost Monday, the seventh weekend after Easter (see box, right, for dates). People start arriving on the Friday before, and leave again on Tuesday. Beware of heavy traffic going to El Rocio (on the Seville-Huelva motorway, and the minor roads in the area) the week before, and leaving again the week after. The actual pilgrims don't travel on the motorway itself, but follow a route which sometimes goes alongside it - the queue of horses and wagons, surrounded by clouds of dust snakes back for miles.

Bar La Canaliega is located right at the heart of Almonte overlooking the main plaza and the glorious church.
I highly recommend this restaurant for tapas if you are traveling in the south of Spain. The tapas are prepared fresh, come out fast, hot, and taste delicious. We were very pleased to stop at this restaurant and have tapas in this small southern Spanish town. If you are visiting Almonte, Spain this is a place you should go to for tapas!
We spent the weekend at Parador Mazagon and visited the Doñana National Park. On our drive back home, we stopped at El Rocio, and at Almonte to just glimpse at these towns.
The service at La Canaliega was excellent! We were attended to right away, had a great table, and the beers came out while we were still ordering our tapas. We ordered several tapas that we described and show in the video. The tapas kept coming out quickly one after another.

The Province of Huelva, in Andalucia, is one of the most beautiful places in Spain, and it is not known to many international travellers. This means you can have authentic experiences here in Huelva.
The province of Huelva is tucked in the South-west corner of Spain, and locals call it the “Secret Coast”. Huelva is home to beautiful national parks, wide sandy beaches and historic sites. Here was the starting point for the journeys of Christopher Columbus.
In this video, I travel to Huelva and El Rocio, one of the most unique villages in Spain and also visit the Wharf of the Caravels, a floating museum in Palos de la Frontera, this was the place where Columbus began his journey to the Americas.

I recently decided to take a trip to Almonte, Ontario, a charming and artsy town that is known for its history, delicious food, interesting shops, and picturesque streets. As I walked along the Riverwalk, I couldn't help but admire the natural beauty of the Mississippi River, which was once used as a travel route by Aboriginal peoples and a catalyst for industry. The river's value now rests in its natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and green power generation.
Starting my visit at Almonte Old Town Hall, I made my way along the Riverwalk, passing by historic sites such as the former Mississippi Iron Works, Thoburn Mill, the railway crossing, and the Victoria Woollen Mill. The walk was relatively easy, with attractive benches located along the path for relaxing, bird watching, and taking in the beauty of the river. Along the way, I enjoyed stunning views of the Mississippi River as it weaved its way beneath the train bridge and past Kirkland Park, to a fabulous lookout by the Victoria Woollen Mill that offered a breathtaking view of the falls.
As I continued along the Riverwalk, I came across the James Naismith statue at the corner of Mill Street and Little Bridge Street. Naismith was born and raised on a farm outside of Almonte and went on to invent the game of basketball at age 30 in 1891. It was fascinating to learn that Naismith wrote the original basketball rule book and founded the University of Kansas basketball program. I made sure to take a selfie with the statue as a memento of my visit.
In Almonte, you can also visit the Naismith House, which is now a Canada's Historic Place. The one-and-a-half-story stone building was constructed in 1850 in vernacular Georgian and with Regency Style elements. It was great to learn about the rich history of this area and how it has evolved over the years.
Almonte is truly a gem of a town, and I can't wait to go back and explore more. The Riverwalk was a peaceful and relaxing experience that reminded me of my hometown, and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature and history.
