????????[4K] Alhaurin de la Torre, Málaga Spain - a Modern Town to Live in | Walking Tour 2023, Andalucía

Alhaurín de la Torre is perfect for those who wish to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the coast. It is far away enough from the busy resorts not to be affected by them, yet close enough so the resort lifestyle can be enjoyed when the fancy takes you.
Alhaurín de la Torre is very close to Malaga airport, midway between the city of Malaga and Torremolinos. The town is set back from the coastline around 10 kilometres, done in 15 minutes by car.
There are parks, squares and children’s playgrounds throughout the town, perfect for family holidays. Portions of the town are mazes of traditional whitewashed terraced homes, some dating back to Moorish times.
Alhaurín de la Torre is a large town with a scattering of small villages in the vicinity, situated in the Andalusian province of Malaga. It’s a modern town, yet still retains its traditional heritage.
Phoenician traders were the first settlers in the area, they industrialised the area with silver and lead mines. Much later the Moors settled here and the town prospered further. When the Christians took Alhaurín they named it the Garden of Allah (Alhaurin) and the town entered a new boom of settlers.

11km hike - Alhaurín de la Torre to Benalmádena Costa following part of the GR249 - great views

Alhaurin de La Torre to Benalmadena, Malaga, Andalucía, Southern Spain

This walk near Malaga, Southern Spain follows part of the GR249 from Alhaurin de La Torre to Benalmadena. We had flown over from our home in Manchester to Malaga for some winter sunshine for a couple of weeks. We were staying in Torremolinos where we have stayed many times before. There are many walks in the vicinity, as well as fantastic beaches and restaurants. Transport links are good, with a regular, cheap bus service to Malaga.

We were staying in Torremolinos and caught bus number 110 in the direction of Malaga, alighting at the stop after IKEA, crossing the bridge over the main road, then changing to catch bus number 132, arriving in Alhaurin de la Torre an hour after setting out. We had a walk round Alhaurin and a coffee in Cafe and Pastel restaurant in the main square of Plaza de San Sebastian. This is typical Spain, with plenty of people out with lots of chatter, sitting outside the cafe. The weather looked mixed, maybe sun, maybe rain, we had our shorts on and hats etc with us. On this walk there are no amenities, so provisions had been bought in Mercadona supermarket the night before and sandwiches made. We walked up the hill over the road to Parque Juan Pablo, passing apartmentos Santa Clara, left along Calle Peteneras, then Calle Pablo Milanes, then right following the road steeply upwards past large houses. The path officially begins at the Gr249 sign found here at the end of the road, together with an information board about Monte Jabalcuza, and a sign for Benalmadena 11.7km, with parking in a lay by. We set out from here at 11.45am, the path was very quiet. We followed the well trodden stony path between the olive trees, crossing dried up river beds, listening to plenty of birdsong. Sunny with a breeze. We reached the top of the path at the pass of Puerto del Canuto at 12.30pm, with great views back to Alhaurin, the mountains behind Malaga and over the sea beyond Torremolinos. We ate our lunch, then went on a small diversion to the left uphill. After 15 minutes we arrived at the top of Picos Palomas, 599m with a trig point, watched by herds of deer. It was windy but with excellent views. Going back down to the col we continued westerly along the ridge, following signs to Benalmadena 9.5km. We continued along a clear path for another 30 minutes until we arrived at a disused aerial lift from a quarry. In this area there are about 6 huge quarries, we presumed from the main building works along the Costa over the last 40/50 years. The area is now quiet with the quarries closed and the big cranes all gone, partly due to the crisis ten years ago, when most building works were suspended.

We followed a path which keeps close to the spine of the ridge. We arrived at the new Refugio del Canada, shortly followed by Albergue del Canada, both of which were shut. We presumed they have been built for walkers on the GR249, to avoid finding accommodation in Torremolinos or Benalmadena about 500m down the mountain. We would like to visit during the summer when they are open. The weather when we started out had been sunny and windy. But by now the wind had

really picked up, the whole of the coast now obliterated by mist. At this point we had our coats, winter hats, and gloves on, and regretted wearing shorts. Going past the Albergue we followed the Sendero sign and yellow, white and red paint, passing near a fire observation tower. Ten minutes later there was a sign to the left for Puertos de Torremolinos 4.8km. We continued following the sign for Benalmadena 6.9km along the big wide path, which then turns into a road. (Here there is a sign to continue the circular walk back to Alhaurin which is described in the guidebook). At the end of the road we took the path to the right, following the Route 1 sign which goes behind Monte Calamorro. The beauty of walking along this ridge is that there are various paths down to the coast, and whichever one is taken leads eventually to a main road with good public transport links. We followed the Route 1 down, eventually it splits we followed the Route 2 back over the motorway. This is a fairly straight forward path taking about an hour from the top ridge to the motorway. From here we walked past some new build properties, we could have walked another hour down to the coast where we were staying, but opted to catch the bus number 121 instead at 4pm. Then had a lovely walk along by the sea instead of walking through Arroyo de Miel. Distance miles (6.84 Miles - 11.km)

MALAGA, SPAIN TOP 10 (You Will REGRET Skipping This!) | Malaga Spain Vlog

In this Malaga Spain Vlog, I take you with me as I explore the beautiful city of Malaga, located on the Costa Del Sol in Southern Spain, showing you the top 10 best things to do in Malaga, Spain. To start off the Malaga Spain top 10 list, I head to the Malaga Cathedral, located in the center of the city. The Malaga Cathedral, nicknamed the One Armed Woman, because construction never finished, is a beautiful cathedral to admire on both the inside and outside. Next in this Malaga Spain Vlog, I walk right across the street to Malaga Park. Malaga Park is a little tranquil oasis in the middle of the city, with tons of beautiful greenery.

Next up on my Malaga Spain Top 10 list, we walk over to the Pompidou Museum, which is such a cool, colorful cube structure with some incredible artwork inside. Even if you aren’t into art, the Pompidou Museum is a really unique structure to admire from the outside. Number 4 on my list of the 10 best things to do in Malaga, Spain is taking us to Muelle Uno, which is an open-air pedestrian area filled with tons of boutique shops, restaurants, and cafes right by the water. Muelle Uno is a great place to stroll around and relax!

After walking along the promenade, my next stop on my Malaga Vlog is to Malaga’s main city beach, called Malagueta Beach. Although Malagueta Beach can be very crowded, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the scenery and water is! After roaming the beach and going for a quick dip, the next stop on my Malaga Spain Travel Vlog, and number 6 on my list of Malaga Spain Top 10, is taking us to the Gibralfaro Castle. The Gibralfaro castle is a unique castle that’s tons of fun to explore, and is home to some of the best views in the entire city of Malaga!

Not far from the Gibralfaro Castle, is the Alcazaba, another impressive monument and definitely one of the best things to do in Malaga, Spain. Right next to the Alcazaba in Malaga, and next up on my Malaga Spain Vlog, is taking us to the Roman Theatre, which is believed to be one of the oldest structures in all of Malaga!

After soaking up a bit of Malaga’s history, the next stop on my Malaga Vlog is taking us to the main shopping street in Malaga, Spain called Calle Marques de Larios. Many compare this street to 5th Avenue in New York City as it's home to all of the big and famous brands. If you want to shop in Malaga, Calle Marques de Larios is the place to go! The last stop on my Malaga Spain Travel Vlog and to round out my list of the Top 10 things to do in Malaga, Spain takes us to one of Malaga’s many rooftops to watch a beautiful sunset over the city!

I hope you enjoyed my Malaga Spain Vlog and found my Malaga Spain Top 10 list useful for your future trip to Malaga!

Stage 35 of the GR249 - Alhaurín de la Torre - flat, but interesting 21 km walk - THE FINAL STAGE????????✔

GR249, Stage 35 Alhaurin De La Torre to Malaga City - Hot and flat 21 km walk
This walk covers the final stage of the GR 249 from Alhaurin de la Torre to Malaga. This is an interesting walk crossing agricultural land, down the side of Malaga airport, through a nature reserve, some urban walking, and then ending by the beach. We were hoping that the route would be fairly well signposted, as the only maps we had are online. We are intrigued to find out why the GR249 does not start/end in the middle of the city of Malaga as we expected, but about 3 miles south.

We were staying for a few weeks in Torremolinos where we have stayed many times before. There are many walks in the vicinity, as well as fantastic beaches and restaurants. Transport links are good, with a regular bus service nearby to Mijas and Malaga. We caught bus number 110 in the direction of Malaga, we alighted at the stop after Ikea, crossing the bridge over the main road, then catching bus number 132, alighting in Alhaurin de la Torre.

We had previously finished Stage 34 from Benalmadena to Alhaurin at the Sendero Jabalcuza sign on Camino de Las Vinas, and walked down to the main road. On the official GR249 site the next stage starts in El Penon, we thought this very odd, and we cannot think of a reason why. So we decided to walk the intervening stretch.

We began at 9.15am, walking down Camino Finca del Aleman, passing Supersol on the right. There are signs for walks and a map to El Penon y Zapata which we followed. We headed downhill, then left along the A404 Malaga Road, right at a roundabout by a petrol station, then down the Avenida Las Americas. This is a lovely tree-lined road between the fields, with a wide pavement to walk along. Forty minutes later we arrived in El Penon, going straight on down Avenida de Gran Canaria, past an ecological building-with birds living in it. We knew the start of the walk was somewhere near, and after some searching we found in the far corner of a play park a notice board with Stage 35 on it, and a map.

We went to the very nice Pena de Roja bar for coffee and toast. The day was already warming up, and I had the feeling we should have arrived earlier!! We returned to the board, but there are no arrows indicating which street to turn down. We checked our online maps and found the route out of town is down Fuente Del Nogal, then there is actually a sign saying Camino de Guadalhorce/Malaga 13km, we were happy to find it. The track passes over a very smelly irrigation channel, turning right ten minutes later at a red and white sign, following the drainage channel, left by a sign down a dirt track, then right under a motorway bridge with graffiti on. There are fabulous views all around, over the crops of proteas to the mountains of Mijas, and the mountains of Malaga. It is unusual for us to be down on the plain instead of in the mountains, but enjoyable.

After the motorway there is a 5-way junction, we turned right following the Salida de Camiones sign. At 11.25am we reached the hamlet of Zapata, where there is part of an aqueduct known as Puente del Rey. Building of the aqueduct was started in 1727 to bring water from Churriana to Malaga, mills were built along it, and part of it was a bridge over the river. But due to money disputes it was never completed, but has recently been declared a site of historical interest. Some houses have been built into the structure. I thought it was really interesting.

We turned left at a sign saying attention walkers, going down a very busy narrow road, with plenty of cars on the road from the nearby airport parking. There were no signs here, unfortunately we went the wrong way, and walked for 15 minutes up a track on the wrong side of the river. On our map there was a bridge over the river at this point, but in reality, it is

a rather deep ford. As we did not want to wade through the very dirty water, we re-traced our steps. The correct path follows the road over the river, before turning left to follow a long track along the perimeter of the airport. A couple of signs at this point would have been fantastic.

It was fascinating walking past the airport, somewhere we have been so often, but seeing it from a completely different angle. Malaga airport was first opened in 1919, and has expanded many times since, in 2019 it handled 20 million passengers, the Costa Del Sol being a very popular location.

We reached a sign at 12.30pm 6.6km to go, we were actually looking forward to the end, as the temperature must have been hitting 30 °c especially with the sun bouncing off the white stony path. We enjoyed watching the planes coming in too, there are security cameras and fences so that the runway can’t be accessed.
