Places to see in ( Valencia - Spain ) Parque Natural de la Albufera

Places to see in ( Valencia - Spain ) Parque Natural de la Albufera

The Albufera, or L'Albufera de València in Valencian, is a freshwater lagoon and estuary on the Gulf of Valencia coast of the Valencian Community in eastern Spain. It is the main portion of the Parc Natural de l'Albufera de València (Valencian Albufera Natural Park), with a surface area of 21,120 hectares (52,200 acres).

The natural biodiversity of the nature reserve allows a great variety of flora and fauna to thrive and be observed year-round. Though once a saltwater lagoon, dilution due to irrigation and canals draining into the estuary and the sand bars increasing in size had converted it to freshwater by the seventeenth century.

The Valencian Albufera Nature Park and lagoon lies just 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) south of Valencia, in the municipal areas of 13 towns and four pedanies (former towns) adjoined to the capital city, these in turn lying within four comarques or counties, namely, in Horta Sud: Albal, Alfafar, Beniparrell, Catarroja, Massanassa, Sedaví and Silla; in Ribera Baixa: Albalat de la Ribera, Cullera, Sollana, Sueca and El Mareny de Barraquetes; in Ribera Alta: Algemesí; and in the County of Valencia and greater metropolitan area of València, in the pedanies of Pinedo, El Palmar, El Saler and El Perellonet. Its proximity to the capital city of the Valencian Land and easy access facilitate nature experiences and birdwatching.

Since 1990, the Valencian Albufera Nature Reserve has been included as a Ramsar Site in the list of wetlands of international importance for birds, established in the Ramsar Convention of 1971. Since 1991 the Parc Natural de l'Albufera de València has also been included in the Special Protection Areas (Zepa in Spanish).

L'Albufera is heavily dominated by Cyanobacteria, particularly Synechococcus. The natural microbial population of Albufera has been recently described.

Places to see in ( Valencia - Spain ) Torres de Quart

Places to see in ( Valencia - Spain ) Torres de Quart

The Torres de Quart are a pair of twin towers that were part of the medieval wall that surrounded the old town of Valencia , whose function was to defend the city. They are located at the junction of Calle Guillén de Castro and Calle Quart.

The Towers of Quart were built by the masters in the noble art of stone Francesc Baldomar and Pere Compte in the fifteenth century , between 1441 and 1460 . The works also included Tomás Oller and Jaume Pérez. The style of the towers is late Valencian military gothic , imitating to the Towers or Arc del Triunfo of the Castel Nuovo of Naples , designed by the Mallorcan architect Guillem Sagrera and where other masters of the Crown of Aragon intervened when Naples was conquered by the troops of Alfonso V the Magnanimous .

These walled towers have endured the War of Independence of the French, the Succession , the cantonal and the Spanish Civil War . You can still see traces of the impacts caused by the cannon of the War of Independence on its thick walls, thinking many people are provoked by the deterioration of the passage of time. In 1931 they were declared National Monument , existing a reference to them in the law 16/1985 on the Spanish Historical Heritage .

The Torres de Quart are the remains that have reached to our days of the old medieval wall of Valencia , together with the Towers of Serranos , open towards the north. Other access gates to the city of Valencia were the disappeared doors of San Vicente towards the south and the Door of the Sea towards the east or toward the port. These gates disappeared in the nineteenth century , together with the rest of the wall surrounding the ciutat vella , by order of the interim civil governor Cirilo Amorós , based on the pretext of giving work to unemployed workers, enlarge the city and improve its health.

Since the last decade of the twentieth century , parrots and other exotic birds, escaped from their owners, have nestled and reproduced in the holes caused by the artillery in its exterior facade. Already in the XXI century , the Towers of Cuart are still standing, with a process of restoration of its external façade, blackened by the soot of the traffic that constantly circulates in Quart Street and Guillem de Castro Street.

The Oceanogràfic of the City of Arts and Sciences is the largest aquarium in Europe and contains representatives of the world’s main marine ecosystems. Each building is identified with the following aquatic environments: the Mediterranean, Wetlands, Temperate and Tropical Seas, Oceans, the Antarctic, the Arctic, Islands, and the Red Sea, as well as the Dolphinarium. The Underwater Restaurant and the Access Building which welcomes visitors stand out because of their spectacular roofs designed by Félix Candela.

Oceanografic opened on the 14 th February 2003, the largest marine complex in the whole of Europe is shown to the world as a unique space in the form of a journey through the seas and oceans of our planet to show visitors its most outstanding marine ecosystems.

Its avant-garde architecture, the arrangement of the various aquariums, and its scientific, leisure, and educational vocation make the marine world more accessible to visitors and make them aware of the need for protecting its fauna and flora.

Surface area of 110,000 square metres.
One of the largest dolphinariums in the world with 26 000 cubic metres of water and a depth of 10.5 metres.
6,761 square metres of methacrylate panels of up to 33 centimetres thick.
150,000 cubic metres of concrete and 15,000 tons of steel.
Over 25 kilometres of piping with diameters ranging from 1.4 centimetres to 1.3 metres.
The Oceanogràfic is made up of different buildings that contain the most significant ecosystems representations of each planet's seas and oceans. A spectacular sphere 26 metres in height, this space simulates two of the most singular wetland areas on the planet: mangrove swamps and fens. A large dome by way of an igloo represents the Arctic region. Underwater Restaurant, located in the centre of the complex, is the most emblematic building of the Oceanogràfic owing to its unique roof designed by Felix Candela. It represents a paraboloid figure similar to that of a water lily, and contains a large aquarium on the ground floor that fits perfectly into the whole of its perimeter.
