Tiny Tour | Úbeda Spain | A quick visit to a World Heritage Site town in Jaén | 2021 Oct

Úbeda is a town in the province of Jaén in Spain's autonomous community of Andalusia, inhabitants. Both this city and the neighbouring city of Baeza benefited from extensive patronage in the early 16th century resulting in the construction of a series of Renaissance style palaces and churches, which have been preserved ever since. In 2003, UNESCO declared the historic cores and monuments of these two towns a World Heritage Site.

The archaeological findings indicate a pre-Roman settlement at Úbeda, such as argaric and iberic remains. The capital of the iberic state was called Iltiraka and was located over the Guadalquivir River, 10 km south of the actual site of the town. Romans and later Visigoths occupied the site as a settlement.

The city is near the geographic centre of the province of Jaén, and it is the administrative seat of the surrounding Loma de Úbeda comarca. It is one of the region's most important settlements, boasting a regional hospital, university bachelor's degree in education college, distance-learning facilities, local government facilities, social security offices, and courts. According to the Caixa yearbook, it is the economic hub of a catchment area with a population of 200,000 inhabitants. Twenty-nine percent of employment is in the service sector.

Chillar Gorge walk, Nerja, Southern Spain - A hike with a difference - You are going to get wet!!

Rio Chillar walk, Nerja, Andalucía,Southern Spain

This fabulous walk is located in Nerja, which lies on the coastal road N-340 between Malaga and Motril. This is one of the top walks in the area, it involves wading through the river, climbing over rocks, and switching from one river bank to the other, taking care not to fall in. It can be busy especially in the Summer months, as people enjoy walking in the cool river gorge. It begins heading north from Nerja, up a wide dried up river bed, until the entrance of a narrow gorge containing the river is reached. At this point due to the rocky river bed, beach type shoes are needed to wade through the water. The gorge is spectacular only 2m wide in parts, with no option to escape for a few miles. Check the weather forecast in advance to avoid being caught out in a sudden torrent. We walked in October after no rain for at least a month, even then in parts the water was up to my knees. Take care.

We walked from Nerja, but alternatively parking is available next to the hydro-electric plant at the mouth of the gorge. After completing another walk to Nerja in the morning, we ate a quick lunch at la Fama restaurant, which is across the road from the main bus stop. We left at 1.30pm walking up the main road (N-340, towards Motril) for about 300m, before taking Calle Picasso to the left. We followed this which provides access to the wide Chillar valley. As we made our way down to the valley floor there were lovely views on our left to Nerja, and across the Rio Higueron valley. We continued, passing under the quiet motorway built on pillars high above us. We came to a fork in the track, (2.10pm) and took the left one through the undergrowth before arriving at an hydro-electric plant at 2.15pm, where a car could be parked. There is a sign for the national park. We went past a locked gate, which prevents car access any further, headed inland, crossing and re-crossing the river shallow enough here to have our boots on.

At 2.45pm we reached a little dam, a small sluice gate and concrete path. Ten minutes later the river was too much for our boots, so we stopped to put on our beach shoes. Not wishing to carry our boots we hid them in the undergrowth, hoping they would still be there on our return. We debated whether to leave our rucksacks too, but decided against it.

There were quite a lot of people around, we thought it would be quiet as it was a mid-week day in October. We chatted to them, one group had been all the way to the top of the river gorge, taking a few hours each way. Continuing we came to the first of 3 gorges, which are found in quite quick succession. It is amazing to be able to stand in clear water touching each side of the narrow gorge (The Cahorros). In parts the water cascades over some small steep ledges and boulders, and small waterfalls have been formed. We walked up in the water for one hour, before deciding to turn round (4pm). People were still walking in both directions. We re-claimed our boots, arriving back at the sluice gate at 4.45pm, then stopped in the sunshine to put the boots back on. We continued back past the locked gate, along the track, then road, arriving back near the bus station at 5.30pm. A fantastic day out.

It is a rare find being able to walk for miles up a river gorge. The only comparable place that I can think of is The Narrows, in Zion Park, USA.

The walk continues after we turned around, opening out reaching La Presa a reservoir lying on the right of the river, from there you can then turnaround and re-trace your steps. Alternatively, walk from the Caves of Nerja, up the wide track for a few miles to Fuente del Esparto, then join a link path to La Presa.

Distance 7 miles (11.3km)

Duration of Walk 4 Hours

Elevation Gained- 175 feet (m) not much

Information/Advice

Walking along a stony river bed was very tough on the feet even in beach shoes with rubber soles. We saw other people in similar shoes and some in trainers, which may be a better option. One young couple were making good speed in their walking boots. I can't imagine that this would be good for the boots though. Maybe they arrived at the top of the gorge and had not realised there would be so much water. But another time I would consider wearing old boots.

I would advise taking a walking stick or 2 to add stability, as I thought it would have been quite easy to slip and fall in.

This area of Southern Spain is accessible from England either by driving through France and Spain, or flying to Malaga then hiring a car or catching the reliable, cheap public transport.

Cuenca | Madrid's Best Day Trip | Highlights

Cuenca is a cute medieval town about 90 minutes out of Madrid. With cathedrals, Hanging Houses, Jesus statues and more uphill walks than you can sneeze at, it is totally worth checking out. Two nights in Cuenca felt appropriate.

Thanks to Claire for snapping footage of Cuenca's inland beach while I was mooching around the science museum —
