Alcalá de Henares is a profoundly historical city 22km Northeast of Madrid and home possibly the most famous Spanish author from the golden age of literature, Miguel de Cervantes. It's also home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site (the historical center) and one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the western world. In fact, it was the worlds first planned university city, and served as a model for many of the universities in Europe and the rest of the Western World. Additionally, Christopher Columbus in the 1480s, Christopher Columbus had his first meeting with the Catholic Kings, King Ferdinand II of Aragon and his wife Queen Isabella I of Castile, who funded his voyages to The Americas for the discovery of the New World, an important theme in the future of my channel. My local Spanish friend meets me in the city and shows me the city.
*I am not a historian, so my knowledge of this place is very limited, it's more of a walking tour of the city with my friend than a historical critique and analysis of the city. Feel free to leave comments about the history to inform me in a respectful manner, thanks!

Life in Spain 2021 | Alcalá de Henares - More than Don Quixote
Alcalá de Henares is a city 35km northeast of Madrid, or less than an hour away by train. While we refer to the city’s more modern history as hometown of Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, it was founded in Roman times. The Romans conquered the area in the 1st century BC and its Latin name Complutum means confluence, referring to where the river waters flow into one place.
It was conquered by the Moors in 711 and they built an al-qal’a, which means citadel in Arabic. In 1118, it was conquered by the Archibishop of Toledo on behalf of the kingdom of Castile. From then until the end of the Reconquista (Spanish for “reconquest,” from 711 until 1492), the town had both a Jewish and a Moorish quarter.
Universidad Complutense (the Complutense University of Madrid), one of the oldest the world, was founded here in 1293 but moved to Madrid in 1836. The Universidad de Alcalá, which was founded in 1977, occupies some of the old university buildings. It has several sites in the city and one of them can be seen at 1:31.
Above the cathedral at 1:24, there is a large nest. The town is well-known for its population of white storks. Their nests can be seen atop a number of churches and historic buildings in the city.
And as mentioned, the city was home to Miguel de Cervantes, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language. His home is now currently a museum (2:09).

Alcalá de Henares da mucho juego para disfrutones: una imprescindible visita a la universidad, recorrer su calle mayor, tapear por sus bares, cenar en algún sitio más especial, aprender sobre la historia de sus iglesias, sentarse en una de las plazas tan cucas que tiene... ¡una maravilla Alcalá de Henares!

Alcalá de Henares es una ciudad situada al nordeste de Madrid. En 1998 la UNESCO la declaró Ciudad Patrimonio Mundial. Es conocida por la Universidad de Alcalá, que se encuentra en edificios del casco antiguo que datan del siglo XVI. Cerca de allí se encuentra el Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes, donde vivió el famoso autor de El Quijote.
