MOJACAR - Is this Spain’s prettiest town? Van Life Spain ????????
Mojácar, the white washed village on the coast of the Spanish province of Almería is a popular destination for holiday makers as well as for people who are looking to live permanently under the Spanish sun.
Mojacar was declared one of Spain’s prettiest towns in 2003, and it’s no wonder why. With more than 3000 hours of sun a year, less than 200mm of rain per year, an average yearly temperature of around 20 °C and a minimum temperature never dropping below 4 °C - we think this makes it a great place to visit any time of the year!
Mojacar is in fact made up of two parts: Mojacar Pueblo (the town) and Mojacar Playa (the beaches).
The town is an elevated mountain village of whitewashed houses located about 170 metres above sea level on a hilltop, at the end of Sierra Cabrera, in Almeria province.
Mojacar town has a long history. Back in 1488, when all the towns of the region had surrendered to the Catholic Monarchs, Alavez, the Moorish ruler of Mojacar at the time, refused to hand over the town. He reportedly said that he was as much Spanish as the Catholic Monarchs and that he didn’t want to engage in a war against Christians, but rather wanted the inhabitants of Mojacar to be treated as brothers, and not as enemies. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabel accepted Alavez’s pledge of loyalty and the village kept prospering.
The town enjoyed a period of great economic prosperity after silver was discovered at the beginning of the 19th century. However, this didn’t last long and at the start of the 20th century, the silver mines closed and the town suffered wars, droughts and diseases. This led to a drastic drop in population, leaving less than 300 inhabitants living in the Mojacar area during the mid-20th century
Then, in the 1960s, the mayor of Mojacar began offering land to those who would commit to restoring the ruined town. The mayor’s proposal was extremely appealing to artists, intellectuals, and journalists from every part of the world, who fell in love with Mojacar’s location and long-time history.
Together with the renovation of Mojacar Pueblo’s houses and streets, new residential areas also began to be built along the seashore, thus giving birth to the impressive Mojacar Playa as a tourist destination that we see today.
The beaches of Mojacar are some of the most appealing along the seashores of Almeria. Almost half of the 17 km worth of sandy beaches have been granted the Blue Flag status.

In the garden area to the right of the main entrance you have a fully paved area where you have the lovely private pool area and also a full outdoor kitchen. Here you have a free standing shower and ample room for chairs, tables and sun-loungers to soak up the lovely sunshine that this area offers.

Are you looking to purchase your dream home in Spain? Have you been looking at the province of Almeria? Maybe you have never heard of Almeria? Well if this is the case this video is a little insight into the very popular area Arboleas which is located only 30 minutes from the beaches of Mojacar Playa.
The agricultural village of Arboleas lies in the Almanzora Valley on the banks of the Almanzora River which is now dry Rambla. The village is probably best known for growing fruit trees, olive and almond trees as well as crops such as barley and wheat.
Arboleas, AlmeriaThe history of Arboleas can be traced as far back to the prehistoric period, and the preceding periods that followed (the Romans, Christians and Moors) although it is believed that the current village originates from medieval times.
There are many buildings of interest in and around the village such as the Church Of Santiago that dates back to the late 1800's and the Torre de Arboleas (the Arboleas Tower) which is believed to be a 15th century watchtower but now the village clock.
The population of Arboleas (approx. 4500 of which around 60% are Spanish) celebrate the annual festivals of Santa Ana, San Roque, Virgen del Pilar and the Patron Saint celebrations between July and October. The village get together and make a huge paella for everyone attending the Fiesta to share.
Plaza in Arboleas, AlmeriaArboleas has a good variety of shops, bars and restaurants with a weekly market on Saturday where you can purchase many of the village’s home grown products and much more. The village has its own purpose built Medical Centre and a Dentist.
It is approximately a 10km 15 minute drive to the main town of Albox or a 22km 25 minute drive to Huercal Overa. If you fancy a day out at the seaside then the bustling coastal town of Mojacar Playa is around a 25 minute drive away.
Easy access to the motorway means that getting to and from the major airports is relatively quick and straightforward.
An hour to Almeria airport, an hour and a half to Murcia airport and 2 hours to Alicante.
