Driving to Philadelphia (Turkey)
8-9. March 2021. Turkey. Manisa Province. Alaşehir. Founded 189 BC by King Eumenes II of Pergamon, the world's first Philadelphia is in Turkey. Eumenes II named the city for the love of his brother, who would be his successor, Attalus II (159–138 BC), whose loyalty earned him the nickname Philadelphos, literally meaning one who loves his brother. The city is the site of one of the seven churches of Asia in the Book of Revelation. Along the drive from Antalya to Philadelphia, we stop briefly at Kuyucak in Isparta, a town with the nickname lavender village for obvious reasons, followed by Ulubey Canyon (only the Grand Canyon is bigger) and the ancient Macedonian city Blaundus, sometimes referred to as the Stonehenge of Turkey. Once arrived in Philly and dined on its yöresel (local) food of kapama, pide, and kokoreç (lamb intestine said to be the best in all of Turkey), we branch out to its neighbors Salihli, famed for its Odun Köfte (involving baby lamb & oak wood), and Sardis, capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia, home of the most impressive synagogue in the western diaspora yet discovered from antiquity.

MANİSA SARAYI Saray-ı Şehzadegan olarak da bilinen bu saray yapısı 1595 yılına kadar aktif olarak kullanılmıştır. Bu tarihten sonra sancaktan yetişmenin kaldırılmasıyla şehrin şehzadeler kenti kimliği sona ermiş ve saray terk edilmiştir. Fakat saray yapılarının bir kısmının ilerleyen zamanlarda da onarılıp kullanılmaya devam edildiği bilinmektedir. Tüm bunlara rağmen Manisa Sarayı zamana yenik düşmüş ve pek çok yapısı bugüne ulaşamamıştır. Ayrıca Kurtuluş Savaşı sırasındaki Manisa Yangınında saray yapılarının ahşap kısımları yanmış ve harap olmuştur. Bugün Manisa Sarayından sağlam kalabilen tek yapı Fatih Kulesi olarak bilinen binadır. Bunun dışında birkaç hamam kalıntısından başka hiçbir şey günümüze ulaşamamıştır.
