After getting immersed in the charm and jam of İstanbul, we bidded it farewell and took a soothing getaway to Sakarya, which located just two hours away from Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport with direct access available anytime. The province of Sakarya is known for its lovely city center called Adapazarı and its 15 surrounding districts, home of marvelous wonders of nature including green forest national parks, lakes, rivers, beaches, and thermal springs.
We spent our day in Sakarya by exploring Adapazarı, a calm and quiet but bustling capital of the province. Unlike many other big cities in Turkey, Adapazarı looks pretty humble without any skyscrapers in sight, due to 1999 earthquake which left significant impacts to the area so the city keeps its buildings in safe levels ever since.
We enjoyed such pleasing view of the city center and locals activities at Adapazarı Gar Meydanı and Kent Meydanı City Square under the cloudy but vibrant blue autumn sky. We fancied a little stroll through nearby
Uzun Çarşı or Long Market, a historical market dated back 300 years ago but still thriving to this day. Then we moved forward to Çark Street Caddesi, a modern and busy shopping avenue which reminded us a lot of Istanbul İstiklal Caddesi Street.
After exploring the city center, we went uphill to Serdivan Mahallesi, a student district situated on a highland. The area proudly hosts one of the best university in Turkey, Sakarya Üniversitesi, which itself is another marvelous location with direct view to blue water body of Sapanca Gölü Lake. Serdivan accommodates the students life with numerous dormitories and restaurants and cafes.
The day got a bit rainy as we arrived in Orman Park, a beautiful restaurant park full of tall trees in the middle of the city. We fancied their generous buffet style kahvaltı or known as Turkish breakfast. Then we visited Agora Adapazarı AVM to continue our culinary ramble to the food court. When the night came, we went back to where we started, Kent Meydanı which by then was shimmering in golden sunset lights.

Bölgede önceleri Bitinyalıların, ardından Bizanslıların yaşadıkları bilinmektedir. Nitekim bölgenin en önemli tarihi eseri olan Beşköprü’yü (Sangarios Köprüsü) Bizans İmparatoru II. Jüstinyanus’un inşa ettiği kayıtlarda mevcuttur. Öte yandan bilim adamlarının yaptıkları araştırmalara göre, (eski adı: Sangarios) Sakarya Nehri’nin birkaç asır öncesine kadar biri şehrin doğu yakasından geçen bugünkü yatağından, diğeri Beşköprü’nün altından olmak üzere iki farklı koldan aktığı düşünülmektedir. Nitekim 1324'te Orhan Gazi zamanında Bizanslılar'dan fethedilen yerleşim birimine “Ada Karyesi” (Ada köy) adının verilmesi, söz konusu bilgileri doğrulamaktadır. Hâlen mevcudiyetini koruyan Orhan Camii, deprem ve yangınlarla mimarisi değişse de, Osmanlı fethi'nin en önemli ayak izlerini taşımaktadır. Başta Gubarizadeler, Arapzadeler, Abasıyanıkzadeler, Kandıralıoğulları ve Rençberzadeler olmak üzere 12 aile tarafından kurulan köy, bölgede ziraatın canlanması üzerine pazarıyla ilgi çekmiş, ardından nüfus artmaya başlamış 16. yüzyılda “Ada Nahiyesi”ne dönüşmüş, 18. yüzyılda Kocaeli vilâyetine bağlı “Ada Kazâsı” adını almıştır. 19. yüzyılda bölgenin zirâi ve ticari yapısına göre şekillenen yerleşim; Semerciler; Tığcılar; Hasırcılar; Papuçcular ve Çıracılar adını taşıyan merkez mahalleler kurulmuş ve ilçe Sakarya Nehri’nin iki kolu arasında kurulan pazarıyla, gerçek bir “Adapazarı” hüviyetine dönüşmüştür. 1868 yılında “Adapazarı Belediyesi” adıyla belediye teşkilatı kurulan ilçe, 93 Harbi diye bilinen 1877-78 Osmanlı-Rus Harbi sonrasında, bilhassa Kafkasya ve Rumeli’dan yoğun göçe maruz kalmış ve bir nevi “Der Sâadet” hüviyeti kazanmıştır. 19. asrın ikinci yarısında ilçede Rum ve Ermenilerin önemli bir ticâri gelişme gösterdikleri Uzun Çarşı ve Orta Camii civârındaki dükkânlarda ticaret yaptıkları, Kömürpazarı, Karaağaç Dibi ve Tuzla mahallelerinde ikâmet ettikleri gözlenmiştir. 1893 yılı Osmanlı nüfus sayımına göre Adapazarı'nda yaşayan kişi sayısı 53.924 kişiydi. Bunların büyük çoğunluğu (%75) Manavlar ve Rumeli muhâcirinden oluşmaktaydı (40.318 kişi). Kentteki en büyük azınlık 10.702 kişi ile Ermenilerdi. Nüfusun %20'sini oluşturan Ermenileri, 2.517 kişi ile Rumlar izlemekteydi. Onların nüfus payı ise %5'ti. 19. yüzyıl sonunda Adapazarı'ndaki her dört kişiden biri Hristiyandı.
The history of Adapazarı dates back to 378 BC, when it was called Agrilion (Αγρίλιον). Ancient settlers included Phrygians, Bithynians, Cimmerians, Lydians, Greeks, and Persians, but Adapazarı got its identity from the ancient Hellenistic, Romans, and Greek Byzantine rulers. One of the most important remains of historical significance is the Justinianus Bridge (Turkish: Beş Köprü) built by Byzantine Emperor Justinian in 533 CE. Historically, it was situated on the old military road from Constantinople (now Istanbul) to the east, connected in Late Antiquity by the important Sangarius Bridge and, since the end of the 19th century, by a branch line with the Anatolian railway. In 1868, the Adapazarı Municipality was officially founded on the town called Der Seadet. A sugar factory and agricultural sugar factory attracted many migrants and accelerated the industrialization of the city. A law passed on 17 June 1954 in the Grand National Assembly saw the city separated from Kocaeli Province and made the center of its own province. The 1999 Marmara earthquake affected Adapazarı and inflicted losses in lives and damage. In the 2000 official census, the population was recorded as 158 474. By official decree, the province was renamed Sakarya after the Sakarya River which runs through it.
