We left Cappadocia for a 10 hour Journey to back Istanbul and on the way we saw this amazing salt lake in Turkey. In this travel vlog we also explored Istanbul again for another day and we explored Istanbul's Grand Bazaar and the incredible Basilica Cistern. Lake Tuz Turkey - A Salt Lake That Is Drying Up
We decided to visit Lake Tuz while we were in Cappadocia Turkey and it was a little underwhelming. Lake Tuz is roughly a two hour drive from Cappadocia and it is drying up due to climate change. There was also quite a lot of trash due to it being a public place and unfortunately many people were not respecting it.
Overall I can't quite recommend it as a place to see because it is far away from anything else a tourist would normally do or see.

Tuz Gölü or Salt Lake // One of the largest hypersaline lakes in the world.
Tuz Gölü is the second largest lake in Turkey with its 1,665 km2 (643 sq mi) surface area and one of the largest hypersaline lakes in the world.
The lake, occupying a tectonic depression in the central plateau of Turkey, is fed by two major streams, groundwater, and surface water, but has no outlet.
For most of the year, it is very shallow (approx.0.4 m (1 ft)). During winter part of the salt is dissolved in the fresh water that is introduced to the lake by precipitation and surface runoff (to 324‰ salinity). During the summer the lake dries up exposing an average of 30 cm thick salt layer in August. This mechanism is used as a basis for the process of the salt mines in the lake. The three mines operating in the lake produce 63% of the salt consumed in Turkey. The salt mining generates industrial activity in the region, mainly related to salt processing and refining.

UNREAL conditions at LAKE TUS in Winter (Turkey Van Life)
On our winter van life trip across Turkey from the Turquoise coast to Georgia, we stopped off at the beautiful Lake Tus (tuz gölü). We arrived just as the sunset with no pre planned park up for the night.
A local suggested we should cross the lake and enjoy sunrise from the western shores, however when we tried to cross the lake we were a little surprised by the condition of the road..... Did we make it to the other side? Full vlog coming soon!

On the road to CAPPADOCIA, next stop: Tuz Gölü
We are still on the road, direction Cappadocia.
However, this second part of the road trip came with a few extra adventures as well as an incredible outcome!
As we were heading for the night in a campsite we got a piece of hard wire stuck in our tire. How did that happen you probably wonder? Well, we were crazy enough to arrive late, drive where we thought the campsite was and after realizing that nothing was there, we left with a little surprise! Luckily there was no permanent damage but it was not fun at all!
The next day as we were heading to our next stop for the night, we were driving on a dirt road and the camper started sliding due to the rain, we almost went off the road! Again there was no campsite!
Finally, we made it to a magical place: Tuz Gölü! This is the second largest lake in Turkey. The lake occupies a ‘tectonic depression’ and is fed water by two major streams but has no outlet at all. It covers a huge area of about 1500 square kilometers / 580 square miles, however for most of the year is very shallow, especially during dry summer when the water evaporates leaving a thick crust of salt on the surface. The salt is extracted, worked, refined, and sold in the local market, thus making this the biggest industry for this area. Tuz Gölü it’s not only the biggest salt lake in Turkey but one of the biggest in the world as well. When you visit you must go for a walk barefoot on the salt!!!!

One of the biggest salt lakes in the world. 80 kmt x 30 kmt. Deepest point around 2 meters. Central Anatolia in Turkey. Beautiful place to visit if you are in the region of Cappadocia. 2 hours driving from Goreme. It is a must. July 5th 2018. 30 C. Perfect temperature. Blue skies.
