Quaint Ankara: The best places to see before you leave the city

Ankara tour: the city that surprised me despite my initial impression that there is nothing to see there.

Are you looking for an unexpected adventure? Then come with me to Ankara, the capital of Turkey! When I first arrived, I didn't expect a lot, but this city has so much to offer. Join me on a journey through the ages as we explore some of Ankara's most interesting attractions.

What to see in Ankara? Let's start with the Roman era. The Julianus Column and the Temple of Augustus are fascinating examples of the ancient architecture of this once-great empire. We will also visit the old castle, known as the Citadel, which is perched on a hilltop overlooking the city.

But that's not all! In this review Ankara also shows plenty of modern attractions it can offer. The Youth Park, also known as Genchlik, is a great place to relax and unwind. You can stroll through the park, take a bike ride, or even (possibly) rent a paddleboat and cruise around the lake.

Of course, no trip to Ankara would be complete without seeing the Victory Monument on Ulus Square. This iconic landmark symbolizes Turkey's hard-fought independence. And then there's the Ataturk Mausoleum, or Anitkabir, which is a stunning example of modern Turkish architecture. The exhibitions and the mausoleum itself are a must-see for anyone visiting Ankara.

So come on, let's explore Ankara together! This video is designed to give you a glimpse of what this fascinating city has to offer. And who knows, maybe you'll be as pleasantly surprised as I was. Don't miss out on the chance to experience Ankara's unique blend of history and modernity.

Ankara has plenty of tourist attractions, all combined in this video for you to consider and plan your trip.

00:00:00 Walk starts at south gate of Erdal İnönü City Park (Turkish: Kent Parkı)

Erdal İnönü City Park, is recently regenerated and opened to pblic. The park - incuding beach and restaurants, is being operated Municpality of Antalya.

This city park in Antalya Turkey is named after Erdal İnönü. Erdal İnönü (6 June 1926 – 31 October 2007) was a Turkish theoretical physicist and politician, who served as the interim Prime Minister of Turkey between 16 May and 25 June 1993. He also served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey from 1991 to 1993 and as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from March to October 1995. He served as the leader of the Social Democracy Party (SODEP) from 1983 to 1985 and later the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP) from 1986 to 1993. He was the son of the 2nd President of Turkey, İsmet İnönü.

Antalya was first settled around 200 BC by the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon, which was soon subdued by the Romans. Roman rule saw Antalya thrive, including the construction of several new monuments, such as Hadrian's Gate, and the proliferation of neighboring cities. The city has changed hands several times, including to the Seljuk Sultanate in 1207 and an expanding Ottoman Empire in 1391. Ottoman rule brought relative peace and stability for the next five hundred years. The city was transferred to Italian suzerainty in the aftermath of World War I, but was recaptured by a newly independent Turkey in the War of Independence.

Antalya is Turkey's biggest international sea resort, located on the Turkish Riviera. Large-scale development and governmental funding has promoted tourism. A record 12.5 million tourists passed through the city in 2014.

One of the great things about visiting Turkey is that visitors can book a tour that will take them through all the hotspots, or they can safely wander about off the beaten path – either way, the trip will be a memorable one!

Welcome to things to do channel. We publish new videos every day, so be sure to subscribe, and don't forget to ring the bell to get notified on our latest videos.

Here are 10 things to do in Turkey.

Visit Ankara Castle.

Ankara Castle, or Ankara Kalesi, is a fortification that remains from the early medieval era of Turkey. Though it is unknown when exactly the castle was built, it is estimated to have been established in 7th century AD and was at one point used by the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, Seljuq Turks, the Crusaders, and the Ottoman Empire.

Admire Cappadocia.

The historical region of Cappadocia can be found in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The hills and rock sites are officially a part of Gerome National Park, which is a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site. The unique cultural and historical heritage of the region, along with its exceptional natural wonders, has made it a popular tourist attraction.

Explore Aqua Vega Aquarium.

Located in Ankara, Aqua Vega Aquarium is one of the largest underwater worlds in Europe. Aqua Vega houses the third-largest tunnel aquarium and is a fun place for the entire family. Exhibits such as Adrenaline World, the Sea Shell Museum, and Jungle Corner allow visitors to explore this amazing underwater world and get up close and personal with sharks, koi fish, napoleon fish, clownfish, and much more.

Discover Ataturk’s Mausoleum.

Ataturk Mausoleum, or Anitkabir, is a mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk who was the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. Having opened in 1953, the mausoleum is also the resting place of the second President of Turkey, Ismet Inonu.

Basilica Cisterns Istanbul.

The Basilica Cistern in Istanbul is the largest of hundreds of ancient cisterns that can be found beneath the city of Istanbul. It was built during the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian.

Stroll around Esztergom Castle Turkish Cultural Center.

The Esztergom Castle and Turkish Cultural Center were established in 2005 for people to experience and better understand Turkish history and culture. Found on the banks of the Danube River and within the historical Estergon Castle, the cultural center is filled with traditional Turkish art for visitors to experience.

Go back in time at Gobekli Tepe.

Gobleki Tepe, which translates to “Potbelly Hill,” is an archaeological site in the Anatolia Region of Turkey. The tell, which is an artificial mound accumulated from the refuse of people who have lived on the site for thousands of years, is nearly 50 feet high and approximately 980 feet in diameter.

Shop at the Grand Bazaar.

The Grand Bazaar is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. Since 1455, the market has constantly grown and now covers over 61 of Istanbul’s streets and has over 4,000 shops.

See the Hippodrome of Constantinople.

Previously, the Hippodrome of Constantinople was the main sporting and social center of the capital of the Byzantine Empire. Today, visitors can explore the renamed Sultanahmet Square and see many of the surviving original structures. Aspects of the Hippodrome include the Serpent Column, which is over 2,500 years old, and the Obelisk of Thutmose III, which was originally erected by Pharaoh Thutmose III during the 18th dynasty.

Relax at Olympos.

Olympos, also known as Lycia, is an ancient city, the ruins of which can be seen in the town of Cirali. It is a part of Olympos Beydaglari National Park, which also includes the ancient cities of Idyros and Phaselis. Visitors can go on guided tours to get the full experience of the historic site that dates to the 4th century BC. Certain sites include the ruins of a bathhouse and the sarcophagus of Captain Eudemons. The ruins are surrounded by a picturesque beach and the site of Yanartas, which comprises various vents spread over an acre that spew fire due to the methane gas in the area.

ANITKABİR 4K | ATA'YI ZİYARET | The Mausoleum of Atatürk, Ankara Turkey | ATATURK'S MAUSOLEUM

ANITKABİR 4K | ATA'YI ZİYARET | The Mausoleum of Atatürk, Ankara Turkey | ATATURK'S MAUSOLEUM
Recorded on 21st April 2021

Anıtkabir (literally, memorial tomb) is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the leader of the Turkish War of Independence and the founder and first President of the Republic of Turkey. It is located in Ankara and was designed by architects Professor Emin Onat and Assistant Professor Ahmet Orhan Arda, whose proposal beat 48 other entries from several countries in a competition held by the Turkish Government in 1941 for a monumental tomb for Atatürk.

The site is also the final resting place of İsmet İnönü, the second President of Turkey, who was interred there after he died in 1973. His tomb faces the Atatürk Mausoleum, on the opposite side of the Ceremonial Ground.

Anıtkabir: The Turkish nation's window on its past and future

An outstanding soldier, commander, reformer, statesman and nation-builder—Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. To understand how Atatürk’s legacy is a part of contemporary Turkish society, it is essential to understand how his spirit is not only very much alive, but deeply embedded in the Turkish national consciousness. The reason for this is not only because of what Atatürk did to keep the Turkish nation together, but also for what he bequeath the Turkish people--a modern day nation with the laws and principles needed to democratically govern future generations.

The trust placed in his leadership during the darkest days of Turkish history, was rewarded by the national unity which he helped forge, and the victorious fight to secure liberty, sovereignty and independence. These achievements gave rise to enduring respect and gratitude which won the hearts of the people, and are still celebrated in the daily life of the nation. Atatürk’s courage and reform-minded ideas also continue to inspire a new generation, and is the reason why Atatürk today is still an influential leader.

The impressive Mausoleum at Anıttepe is thus not only a commemorative site which pays tribute to a great national leader, but is also a symbol of Turkey’s existence and a window onto Turkey’s future. The Mausoleum is physical evidence of the enduring principles, vision, and present-day realities of the foundations upon which Turkey was built.

Lastly, the Mausoleum is not only a testament of the living legacy of Atatürk, but is also an affirmation of the devotion of the Turkish nation to protect and transmit his ideals. The increase in the annual number of visitors is evidence of this devotion.

There are four main parts to Anıtkabir: the Road of Lions, the Ceremonial Plaza, the Hall of Honor (location of Atatürk's tomb) and the Peace Park that surrounds the monument.

Road of Lions
The approach to the monument is a 262 m (860 ft)-long pedestrian walkway that is lined on both sides by twelve pairs of lions carved in a style like the Hittite archaeological finds. The lions represent 24 Oghuz Turkic Tribes and are shown seated to simultaneously represent both power and peace. A five centimeter gap separates the paving stones on the Road of Lions to ensure that visitors take their time and observe respectful behavior on their way to Atatürk's tomb.

Ceremonial Plaza
The Ceremonial Plaza is situated at the end of the Lions Road. The area is 129 m (423 ft) long and 84 m (276 ft) wide and was designed to accommodate 15,000 people. The floor is decorated with 373 rug and kilim (Turkish carpet) patterns, and is made of travertine in various colors.

Hall of Honor

Guards at Anıtkabir
The Hall of Honor is the iconic symbol of Anıtkabir and the location of Atatürk's tomb. The structure is 41.65 m × 57.35 m (137 ft × 188 ft) in plan and rises to a height of 17 m (56 ft), with the columns themselves measuring 14.4 m (47 ft).

Atatürk's tomb is situated right under the symbolic 40-ton sarcophagus in the ground floor of The Hall of Honor, and Atatürk's body is buried below this in a special Tomb Room in the basement level. The room has an octagonal plan in Seljuk and Ottoman architectural styles, and its pyramidal ceiling is inlaid with gold mosaics.

Peace Park
The park that surrounds the monument is called a Peace Park in honor of Atatürk's famous expression Peace at home, peace in the world. It contains around 50,000 decorative trees, flowers and shrubs in 104 varieties, donated from around 25 countries.
