CAPPADOCIA, TURKEY | 9 Best Things To Do In Magical Cappadocia

Find the BEST things to do in Cappadocia Turkey in this video. We explored Cappadocia for about two weeks, exploring different areas in the region. We ranked our 9 best things to do in Cappadocia.

The 9 best things to do in Cappadocia Turkey include:

9. Lake Tuz
The 9th best thing to do in Cappadocia is to visit Lake Tuz. Not only is Lake Tuz the largest salt lake in Turkey, but it’s also one of the largest salt lakes in the world. It’s known for its vibrant pink color.

8. Uchisar Castle
At number 8 we have Uchisar Castle, which towers above the Cappadocia valleys and is the highest point in the area. The castle is the biggest and most beautifully carved rock formation in the region.

7. Go on a camel ride
There are many ways to explore the Cappadocia valleys and one fun option is from the back of a camel or horse. There are many tour operators in and around Göreme that offer one or two hour rides. We decided to go on a camel ride during sunrise.

6. Göreme Open-Air Museum
At number 6, we have the Göreme Open-Air Museum. This isn’t your everyday museum. It’s actually a large outdoor area, home to various monasteries, churches and chapels carved out of the rock.

5. Watch the balloons at sunrise
The 5th best thing to do in Cappadocia is to watch the hot air balloons at sunrise. Watching hundreds of balloons floating through the orange skies is a truly magical sight. You can find viewpoints all around Göreme that offer magnificent views of the action.

4. Ihlara Valley
The fourth best thing to do in Cappadocia is to explore Ihlara Valley. The Ihlara Valley is about 100 meters deep and about 10 km long, which makes it the perfect hiking destination. It was once a settlement area that hosted monastery life between the 4th to 13th centuries.

☑️ Ihlara Valley + Derinkuyu City Day Tour:

3. Underground cities
Cappadocia is extremely fascinating and the underground cities are a big reason why. You can find approximately 200 underground cities in Cappadocia, which were built to protect the inhabitants from outsiders. This allowed 1000s of people to live their lives in total secrecy! Today, you can visit some of these underground cities and explore various levels.

2. Hiking the valleys
Filled with fairy chimneys and surreal volcanic rock formations, Cappadocia is home to some of the most beautiful valleys in the world. From the awe-inspiring Rose Valley to the strange Love Valley and the lush Ihlara Valley. Cappadocia begs to be explored on foot and is a true hiker’s paradise.

1. Hot air balloon ride
The best thing to do in Cappadocia is to go on a hot air balloon ride. Seeing the incredible rock formations from above is one of the most magical experiences we’ve had during our world travels so far. The beauty of the sunrise colors and 100s of other balloons floating around us was almost indescribable.

In this video I share my experience in Cappadocia, Turkey during a recent visit with my wife.

Nestled in central Turkey, this place is just an hour's flight from Istanbul and is renowned for its breathtaking hot air balloon rides.

First off, it's essential to know that Cappadocia isn't just a city; it's an entire region. Landing in the charming town of Göreme, situated on the far eastern edge, offers proximity to the captivating rock formations and fairy chimneys. Staying here has its perks – from the surreal rock formations literally within the town to a myriad of amenities like restaurants, hotels, and unique cave dwellings that define the landscape.

One fascinating aspect of Cappadocia is how homes and facilities seamlessly integrate into the rock formations. It's a different approach compared to some places in the American West. In Cappadocia, people have been living in these rock formations for thousands of years, some converted into luxurious cave hotels, creating a unique and immersive experience.

And speaking of unique experiences, I had the chance to stay in a cave hotel. The room was comfortable, but the real treat was the view from the deck overlooking Göreme, making it an unforgettable stay.

A quick tip for exploration: venture to the outskirts of Göreme, where trails offer opportunities for horseback riding, hiking, and even climbing into fairy chimneys. It's the same area where hot air balloons take off, but exploring it later in the day provides a different perspective.

Renting a car is a wise choice to explore the broader Cappadocia region. Places like Uchisar, with its ancient castle, and Love Valley, though a bit touristy, are worth a visit. Love Valley might raise an eyebrow with its name, but the rock formations are intriguing.

Now, let's delve into the main attraction – the hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia. It's a bucket list item for many, and for a good reason. The experience is surreal, offering a unique vantage point of the extraordinary landscapes.

The process begins with an early morning pickup from your hotel, typically between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., and a transfer to the launch site. However, the ride is weather-dependent. If conditions aren't optimal, the meteorologists won't give the green light. In the summer, chances are high; in winter, it's the opposite. In-between seasons, like April, it's a bit of a gamble.

Landing a spot on the outer edge of the basket is a smart move for better photo opportunities. The liftoff is gradual, providing a calm and controlled ascent. The pilot's confidence and the stable, secure feeling contribute to a memorable experience, even for those uneasy with heights.

The flight, lasting around 45 minutes to an hour, takes you close to rock formations, fairy chimneys, and offers spectacular views. It's a visual feast, with everyone on board capturing the moments on their phones. The landing is typically smooth and uneventful.

Regarding reservations, booking online beforehand ensures a guaranteed spot, but it comes at a premium – 300 Euros as opposed to 200 Euros if booked locally. Keep in mind that if weather conditions prevent the balloons from flying, you'll get a refund.

As the journey comes to an end, there's a mix of exhilaration and a touch of sadness that it's over. The views, the experience – it's all so extraordinary that you wouldn't want to miss this opportunity. Cappadocia, with its enchanting landscapes and the magical hot air balloon ride, is indeed a destination that should be on everyone's bucket list.

David’s Been Here takes you to Cappadocia, Turkey to explore the best places to eat in the region. Cappadocia is known for its unusual rock formations and traditional handicrafts, as well as for its supreme hot air ballooning, but there are also several local foods to try.

In this video David showcases his favorite restaurants in the towns of Goreme, Avanos, Mustafapasha, and Urgup. The first restaurant David visits is around the corner from his hotel in Goreme. Restaurant Dibek is a family-owned enterprise in a rustic setting. Here David shows us what a traditional clay pot meal is like. Basically, the kebab (meat) is placed inside a clay pot, sealed, and baked in a wood burning oven. The kebab is allowed to simmer in its own juices, making it super flavorful. Dibek serves its clay pot kebabs with rice, salad, bread, and hummus.

Next up in Goreme is Sedef Restaurant. You can’t miss this place - it’s situated right in the town center along the main street. Sedef serves up breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the best part is it won’t break the bank. Sedef also serves clay pot meals with delicious sides. David tries some local wine from the Cappadocia region.

Now onto the third restaurant in Goreme, A La Turca. This one has more of a fine dining atmosphere. As you can see, this restaurant has beautiful views of the town. Although the menu features international food, the kebabs are a must-try! Remember to make a reservation in advance if you would like to sit on the terrace. The restaurant is quite large, but still manages to feel cozy and intimate. If you’re not in the mood for another clay pot meal, they serve international food as well.

The next place that David visits is Avanos, a town known for its pottery. Actually, all the clay used to make the clay pot kebabs comes from the riverbanks in Avanos. Here David has lunch with his guide at Bizim Ev Restaurant. In Turkish, Bizim Ev means ‘our house’. The restaurant is situated in the owner’s family home, which is a beautiful stone house in the center of town. They have a wine cellar and space to accommodate large groups. You can see family photos and memorabilia on the walls. The baked mushrooms with cheese and homemade baklava were amazing!

Urfa Sofrasi is another one of David’s favorite restaurants in Avanos, especially because it is budget-friendly and in the center of town. The lunch specials are generous and served with freshly baked bread. David enjoyed a filling meal here with his guide.

Next stop on David’s gastronomic tour is Mustafapasha, a town that used to be an old Greek village. David dines at Old Greek House restaurant, which is named for being just that. This is a beautiful Greek home that is now a hotel and restaurant run by Suleyman and his family. His wife cooks int he kitchen and they serve up traditional Turkish dishes

David couldn’t resist dining at a fancy restaurant while in Cappadocia, and so he went to Dimrit in Urgup after several people recommended it to him. Dimrit even let David crack open his own clay pot meal. Dimrit offers the perfect setting for a romantic night out after a busy day of sightseeing.

And there you have David’s favorite places to eat in Cappadocia. It is his hope you will try this mouth-watering cuisine for yourself during your visit.

Top Things to See & Do in Cappadocia, Turkey

???? WATCH: Top 10 Things to Do in Rhodes Island, Greece
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

David scratches another one off of his bucket list with this epic trip
through the region of Cappadocia. Watch as we show you the top things to see and do in Cappadocia.

First stop is the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Goreme Open Air Museum. This area supported a large Christian community for several centuries. By the 4th century, Saint Basel had founded various religious settlements in the area. The Göreme Open Air Museum is a testament to St. Basil’s influence – it is a place where daily worship was carried out in seclusion.

Then onto some arts and crafts. Turkey is known for its intricate hand woven rugs (Kilim), and Cappadocia is a great place to see them being made and also to purchase them if you are interested. David toured Gallery Cappadocia and spoke with the manager about why people should come see the rugs being made. Also, the selection here is amazing! Shopping for rugs in Istanbul can be a headache if you don’t speak the language, which is why many tourists instead prefer to shop for them in Cappadocia where there are less crowds.

David then heads to the town of Avanos to visit the Firca pottery workshop. There, the artists are working meticulously to freehand patterns and calligraphy. Visitors will get a demonstration on how the pottery is formed and will get the chance to browse an extensive inventory of remarkable quality.

We can then see the cluster of fairy chimneys in Cavusin Village, during which David gives us an explanation of how these unusual rock formations are formed. Basically, wind erosion leave each rocky mound with a “hat.”

The Kaymakli Underground City (UNESCO) is another great example of the wonder Cappadocia holds. During the Roman Era, Christian communities used them to hide from religious persecution. There are several underground cities in Cappadocia, many of which are interconnected with tunnels. Kaymakli is several layers deep, with long passages, narrow steps, and a complex tunnel system connecting the rooms. Definitely one of the top things to see and do in Cappadocia!

Back outside David tours the Valley of the Monks in the village of Pasabag. Pasabag valley contains some of the most striking fairy chimneys in Cappadocia. After the hike, David strolls the town of Mustafapasa.

A tour of the Saruhan was an interesting experience, especially since the building was used as an inn for traders traveling along the Silk Road. David continues his journey into the Zelve Valley, the village of Urgup to see some of Cappadocia’s most famous fairy chimneys, and up to the top of the castle of Uchisar to get fantastic panoramic views.

Finally, David shows us the number 1 thing to do in Cappadocia… take a hot air balloon ride! This is the best way to experience Cappadocia from above and appreciate the distinct rock formations unlike anywhere else on earth.

If you’re planning on heading to Cappadocia, we highly recommend Euphrates Tours. They helped us explore this fascinating region and do everything you watched in this video.

Cappadocia Turkey TOP 7 places to visit

Cappadocia (Kappadocia) is not a single town but it really is a vast region in central Turkey which covers five inner states.
If you want to see all that Cappadocia has to offer check out our Cappadocia Turkey video which includes Top 7 places to visit:

1.Hot air Balloon ride is one of the most popular bucket list activities
in Cappadocia. The main goal is to be in the air for the sunrise so you have to get up early and take a shuttle that will take you straight to the embarking point.

Depending on the company you choose (and the price you pay), you’re going to get either a full buffet breakfast or just cookies and coffee while you watch the balloons get inflated. After a quick security brief, you get inside the large basket and you slowly rise in the air. This part is our favorite! The sun hasn’t come out yet, but you still have excellent visibility to appreciate the colorful spectacle of the balloons around you.

The next half an hour is spent going up and down the unique valleys of Cappadocia. When the time comes, your pilot will rise the balloon to give you the best sunrise photo opportunity.

After 50 min you’ll start to look for a landing place. If you are lucky enough, you won’t find a suitable one fast enough, and your flight will be extended from 60 to 75 or even 90 minutes!

The price to ride a hot air balloon is in the price range between $140 and $250 (€125 – €220) per person. The cost depends on the duration of the flight, the moment of the day and whether is peak season or not. Usually the minimum duration is 1 hour flight and it can go up to 3 hours. Very often, the price is lower if you are in a group and you want to book a private flight.

2.Ihlara Valley
is an incredible gorge with a stunning river running right down the heart of the valley for 16km within the volcanic rock, 80-minute drive from Goreme. There are historical churches in the first 7.5 km section of the valley which Ihlara village and Belis?rma village, in the other 7.5 km section has only a few unimportant historical things. Therefore, tour operators make Ihlara valley tours between Ihlara village and Belisirma village.Ihlara valley entrance fee is 20 Turkish Lira (2018)

3.Clay crafting. The Red River, which also happens to be one of Turkey’s longest rivers, has supplied the many generations of craftsmen with the red clay used to create their iconic art. Pottery has been produced in this region as far back as around 2000 BC. During your visit you’ll come across many family run potteries. But you can also try to make your own one it with a master potter with a beautiful assortment of pottery, including handmade historic, contemporary, geometric, phosphorescent, and floral designs.

4.Rose and red valley. If you are planning a trip, there are so many things to do in Cappadocia, and one of the best is exploring its several open-air wonders. Check out our adventure hiking up and down the rock formations of the Red and Rose valleys. We went through dark tunnels, rickety ladders, slippery slopes, narrow passageways and muddy alleys. But, despite the difficulty, we had a great time going up and down the picturesque tuff chimneys that make Cappadocia one of the most fascinating and mysterious regions in Turkey.

5.Pigeon valley. When you come to Cappadocia be sure to take half a day and hike Pigeon Valley. If you want to make it a full day, plan on walking around Uch?sar and Goreme on each end of your hike. The valley is named for the many pigeon houses or dovecotes carved into the rocks and cliffs. Years ago the pigeons were used as message carriers, and their droppings were used as fertilizer and maybe even for use in making explosives.

6.Love valley. Love Valley is located just outside of the town of Goreme, in Cappadocia. You can visit the viewpoint from above or you can trek right down to the base of these huge structures. It’s a safe and easy hike and you get a real feel of the Cappadocia magic. While you’re capturing photographs with these unusual monuments, don’t forget to stop at the specifically designed photo spots lined up along the edge of the valley.

7.Underground city. There are so many underground cities at Cappadocia area of Turkey. No one can know how many underground city there are. The biggest and deepest is Derinkuyu Underground City. There are eight floors and extend at a depth of approximately 85 m. Derinkuyu is by no means the only such city you can visit here. There are actually 40 or so subterranean settlements in the area although only a few are open to the public. But we recommend you to visit the one where we have been.
