Tour Ubeda, Andalucía, Spain in 5 minutes!

We're in Úbeda, in the Jaén Provincia (province).
It is a Comunidad autónoma (autonomous community) of Andalusia in southern Spain.
Úbeda is about 10 km northeast of the city of Jaén.
Click on the upper right-hand corner link for my 5-min video on Jaen.

The Arabs occupied the city in 711 CE.

Ferdinand III of Castile reconquered it in 1234.

Ubeda is renowned for its architecture, particularly of the Renaissance period.

Most of Ubeda is a national monument, and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site in 2003.

The church of Santa María de Los Reales Alcázares de Úbeda sits on a sacred place, built atop the remains of a mosque. The oldest parts of the church were built around 1259.

Enjoy the food of Ubeda.
In a well-watered olive-growing region, Úbeda produces olive oil and olive-pressing equipment.

This is the library of El Palacio Vela de los Cobos. This stately manor was designed in 1551. Our tour guide was the son of the owner of the palace. He's lived for decades in Houston, TX, but now that his dad is in his 90s, he plans to return to take care of the house.

The Holy Funerary Chapel of El Salvador del Mundo is a symbol of Úbeda, Jaén. It was designated a historic-artistic monument in 1931.

I've made over a dozen videos about Spain, including where I hiked across Spain twice, once on El Camino de Santiago and the 2nd time across the Pyrenees.

Tiny Tour | Úbeda Spain | A quick visit to a World Heritage Site town in Jaén | 2021 Oct

Úbeda is a town in the province of Jaén in Spain's autonomous community of Andalusia, inhabitants. Both this city and the neighbouring city of Baeza benefited from extensive patronage in the early 16th century resulting in the construction of a series of Renaissance style palaces and churches, which have been preserved ever since. In 2003, UNESCO declared the historic cores and monuments of these two towns a World Heritage Site.

The archaeological findings indicate a pre-Roman settlement at Úbeda, such as argaric and iberic remains. The capital of the iberic state was called Iltiraka and was located over the Guadalquivir River, 10 km south of the actual site of the town. Romans and later Visigoths occupied the site as a settlement.

The city is near the geographic centre of the province of Jaén, and it is the administrative seat of the surrounding Loma de Úbeda comarca. It is one of the region's most important settlements, boasting a regional hospital, university bachelor's degree in education college, distance-learning facilities, local government facilities, social security offices, and courts. According to the Caixa yearbook, it is the economic hub of a catchment area with a population of 200,000 inhabitants. Twenty-nine percent of employment is in the service sector.

8 Best Hikes in Andalusia ???????? Spain Hiking Road Trip

Hiking in Spain. We traveled to Southern Spain on a road trip and hiked 8 of the best hiking trails in Andalusia (Andalucia). It is very diverse, and so is our list of the hiking trails — each one is the best in its own category and they showcase the wild and naked nature of the Spanish South. These hidden gems are spread out through all of Andalusia, starting from Almeria in the East to the National Park of Sierra Grazalema in the West. This video includes also some travel tips and where to park your car at the trailheads.

Two out of the eight trails require a reservation in advance:

— The Caminito del Rey trail which has also an entrance fee. Tickets can be purchased for guided group tours which costs 18 EUR, or a single visit without guide for 10 EUR. We preferred the unguided tour, but there's a daily limit of 10 tickets in this category, and our dates was fully booked already. So we had to buy the guided tour tickets, but we ended up without the group as you can see in the video.

— And the Garganta Verde trail which is for free but requires a permit that you can get by sending them an email to cvelbosque.amaya@reservatuvisita.es. They have several trails, so include the following information in your email:

I would like to apply for a permit for 2 persons:

Top 10 Places in Spain's Andalusia & Costa del Sol

Top 10 Places in Spain's Andalusia & Costa del Sol accoring to DK travel guide.

10. Sierra Nevada
The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in Andalucia in the south east of Spain. They are the country's tallest mountains, rising to over 3000 metres. The highest peak is Mulhacén at 3,479 m. It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine.

9. Donana National Park
Doñana National Park is a natural reserve in Andalusia, in the provinces of Huelva and Seville. The park is an area of marshes, shallow streams, and sand dunes in Las Marismas, the delta where the Guadalquivir River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It was established as a nature reserve in 1969 when the World Wildlife Fund joined with the Spanish government and purchased a section of marshes to protect it.

8. Baeza & Ubeda
Baeza is a town of approximately 16,200 inhabitants in Andalusia, in the province of Jaén, perched on a cliff in the Loma de Úbeda, a mountain range between the river Guadalquivir on the south and its tributary the Guadalimar on the north. It is chiefly known today as having many of the best-preserved examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in Spain.

7. Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol (literally sun coast) is a long stretch of Mediterranean coastline in the Andalucia region of southern Spain. The Costa del Sol stretches for over 150 km, for 54 km east of Malaga, and as far as the provincial border of Cadiz, some 100 km south west of the city.

6. Ronda
Ronda is a town in Malaga in Spain. Set in and around a deep gorge spanned by an impressive bridge, the relaxing atmosphere here is a great break from some of the more tourist-ridden places on the south coast of Spain, however it can still be packed with day-trippers from the Costa del Sol, especially during the peak summer months.

5. Cádiz
Cádiz is on a narrow slice of land surrounded by the sea. The older part of Cadiz, within the remnants of the city walls, is commonly referred to as the Old Town. It is characterised by the antiquity of its various quarters, among them El Pópulo, La Viña, and Santa María, which present a marked contrast to the newer areas of town. While the Old City's street plan consists of narrow winding alleys connecting large plazas, newer areas of Cadiz typically have wide avenues and more modern buildings.

4. Cordoba City & La Mezquite
Very few places in the world can boast of having been the capital of a Roman province (Hispania Ulterior), the capital of an Arab State (Al-Andalus) and a Caliphate. Such splendor is palpable in the intellectual wealth of this city, that has seen the birth of figures like Seneca, Averroes, and Maimonides. The historic quarter of Córdoba is a beautiful network of small streets, alleys, squares and whitewashed courtyards arranged around the Mezquita, which reflects the city's prominent place in the Islamic world during medieval times.

3. Real Alcázar, Seville
A beautiful palace in Mudéjar (Moorish) style, built in the XIV Century by Pedro I the Cruel. With its myriad rooms, extravagant architecture, lavish gardens with many courtyards, ponds and secrets to be explored, it is a fascinating place to visit. Be sure to check out the room where Christopher Columbus's journey to the Americas were planned.

2. Seville Cathedral and La Giralda
Once judged the third largest church in the world after Saint Peter's in Rome and Saint Paul's in London, this is now arguably the largest church in the world when compared using the measurement of volume. The fifteenth-century cathedral occupies the site of the former great mosque built in the late twelfth century. The central nave rises to an awesome 37m over a total area of 11,520m².

1. Moorish Granada
Granada is a mid-sized city located in Granada Province in the Andalucia region of Spain. Rich in history and culture, Granada is a very worthwhile city in Spain for a tourist. In addition to a rich multicultural history, the Alhambra and other monuments, a student-driven nightlife, and skiing and trekking in the nearby Sierra Nevada, Granada offers a break from the summer heat of other Andalusian cities such as Córdoba or Seville.

Best time to visit Spain

Although the summer months are beautiful along the coasts, thanks to the cooling breeze, the heat can be unbearable in inland areas such as Seville and Madrid. The best time to visit Spain is generally during spring and autumn when the weather is warm and pleasant, yet not uncomfortable. For an in-depth view of the Spanish weather, visit our weather page.

Itinerary for when you travel Spain

With multiple beautiful cities and coastal towns to discover in Spain, creating an itinerary can be quite a task. Although holiday packages seem to dominate the tourism industry in Spain, if you would like to explore the country with a tailor-made plan, Rough Guides can help! Below, we've created you an itinerary with a splendid mix of city, sun and culture. For a more specific route, we've made some itineraries which round up the best routes depending on what you are wanting on your travels to Spain.

Days 1 - 2: Madrid

Spain's capital, Madrid, offers style and elegance. Visit the three major sites; The Royal Palace, the Puerta del Sol and the Plaza Mayor. For Museums head to the Prado Art Museum, famed as being one of the best galleries in the world, and the National Archaeological Museum. To experience Madrid at it's best, stroll down Gran Via in the late afternoon when the streets are buzzing with life.

Days 2 - 4: Seville

Seville is your place if you are wanting Spanish culture. Packed with Moorish history, flamenco bars, tapas, and more sangria than you will be able to manage, this charming historical city is an underrated gem. Visit the Plaza de Espana, explore the Old Quarter, and enjoy the palace gardens at the Royal Alcazar. Seville cathedral is where you will find the grave of the famed Christopher Columbus, and a small climb up the Las Setas de Sevilla wooden sculpture will give you scenic views over the city.

Days 4 - 6: La Malvarrosa

La Malvarrosa is the closest beach to the city, although for a day trip it is worth travelling a little further to the charming Roman town of Sagunto where you will find a beautiful beach that stretches for a mile and a half. As for the city of Valencia itself, check out the Central Market, the Science and Cultural Museum (Ciudad de las y las Ciencias), the Cathedral and la Lonja de la Seda.

Days 6 - 10: Barcelona

Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, has long been praised as the best spot in Spain for it's wacky Gaudi architecture and historical art scene. Must-see sights include La Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, and Casa Mila and Batllo. There is a charm to Barcelona like no other, found by simply strolling it's charismatic streets and indulging in its lively atmosphere. Explore the Gothic Quarter, and dine to your heart's content.

Spanish Culture

When you travel Spain, you'll notice a diversity between cities that is unlike anywhere else. Partly, this is down to an almost obsessive regionalism, stemming from the creation in the late 1970s of seventeen comunidades autonomías – autonomous regions – with their own governments, budgets and cultural ministries, even police forces. You might think you are on holiday in Spain – your hosts may be adamant that you’re actually visiting Catalunya, and will point to a whole range of differences in language, culture and artistic traditions, not to mention social attitudes and politics. Indeed, the old days of a unified nation, governed with a firm hand from Madrid, seem to have gone forever, as the separate kingdoms that made up the original Spanish state reassert themselves in an essentially federal structure.

Food and drink in Spain

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to cuisine in Spain than paella, tapas, and Sangria. Of course, seafood dishes are popular on the coasts and inland, meat is the preferred option. Traditional dishes include croquettes, omelette, and pisto. The Spanish celebrate good food, as with most Mediterranean cultures, so finding a huge market selling everything from chorizos to fresh prawns will be no problem. For more food inspiration, read further on food and drink in Spain!
